Dog-on Adventures was started out of a love of our furry friends. I'm Stef and I have 3 beautiful Alaskan Huskies who love going on adventures and even better when they get to meet new friends on their travels. I figured my dogs can't be the only ones like this so why not provide an environment where they can adventure together. I have several years experience working with dogs around the world fr

om rescuing unwanted babies, to working with elite athletes in the snow, to pampering pooches in day cares. So rest assured your babies are safe to explore and play with their pack mates. I believe a happy content dog is one that is both physically and mentally stimulated. I know when there is a day I can't take my dogs out for some reason I feel bad about it, and I know many of us work and have busy lives that it is not always possible to provide your dog with an adventure everyday. Here is where I want to help. Our 'Walkin' the bark' pack adventures provide your dog with a great way to get their exercise, jumping into swimming holes, running and playing with their pack mates. This is also a great way to mentally stimulate your pooch, seeing and experiencing new places, all the smells to take in and all the doggy conversations they will have. A meet and greet is essential before your dog can be placed into a pack. I will come and collect your dog and then the rest of the pack, drive us out to our location where we can enjoy our expedition and then return your dog home happy and ready for their nap. I want to provide both on and off leash adventures where possible. The first few trips with any new dog will always be on lead until I can build a relationship with your dog for off leash adventures. Longlines, GPS collars and training collars can also be used if need be to make sure your dog is always the safest they can be whilst having the most fun. The 'GeePaw Sled Dog Skills' will provide you with the skills and knowledge to enjoy stimulating your pooch too. Pulling and working is both physically and mentally demanding for your dog and yourself and you will both feel the rush and excitement afterwards while happily relaxing. *We adventure in almost all weather conditions as dogs always love to get out. (This means your dog might not always come back as clean as they left the house).
*We use high quality acana kibble for our adventure treats
*We use compostable poo bags
*Dogs are always 'clipped in' while travelling.
*We try our best to find quiet trails and places for our adventures and we don't go to the same place everyday so it keeps it more exciting. What we expect from you to join one of our Walkin' the Bark packs...
*Dogs must be at least 9 months old
*Dogs must be fully vaccinated and desexed (unless prior discussion)
*Dogs must not be agressive
*Dogs must have good recall and verbal control.

Sun's out tongues out on a thirsty Thursday with the packs today.

Our morning pack was so happy to be out running round in the paddock, snacking on some grass then splashing in the pool to cool off.

Cruizy was back in action for a nice calm, clean and dry walk with her halo or glory today.

Tevie was so happy to be heading out for a swim with her friends. Bouncing and running round everywhere.

Welcome back to Wednesdays!

Another wonderful day in the sunshine for the packs today. The morning pack loving running round in the damp grass and splashing in the creek. Happy to be catching up with their friends.

We welcomed the sweet Shasta into our afternoon pack. Such a lovely boy who just fit right in. Diesel was especially having the best day with lots of playing and zooming with his friends.

With the start of a new year we have decided to introduce a new pack. This pack is tailored for the senior dog.

Regular outdoor exercise, stimulation and socialization have been show to improve the quality of a senior dogs life and health. Fighting against age related illnesses like cognitive decline and lack of mobility.
We have a huge passion for all dogs but seniors have a special place in our lives with 2 aging dogs ourselves.

This new pack is for senior dogs who still want to get out and have some fun and make some friends. Not all dogs want to be around the young ones and all the hype, and some are more fragile and don't want to take the risk of being run into by a younger idiot.

Senior dogs require some extra special care to, so when you become part of the seniors Dog-on Adventures family your doggies receives one free massage a year as well as discounted rates on massages throughout the year and discounted rates on nutrition advice and senior specific nutrition advice. With regular low impact exercise, bodywork and good nutrition we can help our dogs life happily into their senior years.

As the holidays come to an end some may realised all that extra 'love' and treats might have meant your pooch has put on a few pounds.

Woohoo it's holiday time! So lets all have some fun and enjoy it with our doggies. A fun little game I learnt in one of Vicky Austin's seminars on canine anxiety while on our fantastic educational cruise last week.

I want to set you all a challenge over the holidays, a fun 'free shaping' confidence building game you can play with your dogs. Karon Pryor's 101 things to do with a box. (See link below for an example).

The game is simple but it is teaching your dog to think for themselves and make up their own fun as there is no right or wrong. Just get a box and let your dog interact with it.
You just need a box, your 'mark' (clicker, "yes", "good", whatever you use for confirming your dog has done the right thing). And some treats.
Every time your dog engages the box, mark and reward and see where they take you.

If your dog is loving the game and gets it really easily mix it up, play it everyday but we want a different outcome each day. So for example on the first day they might stand in the box and get rewarded. On the second day, only reward for new behaviours, maybe they will end up running circles around the box. Who knows.
Or change the object, a big box one day, a small box the next, an ice cream container the next, look around the room and see what else you could use.

I know I'm looking forward to seeing where each of my guys end up with this and will share some of our successes (or failures) towards the end of the break. Feel free to share yours too.

Walkin' the Bark Thursday packs

So much fun playing in the muddy jungle for our morning crew today. Absolutely having the best time getting covered in mud. Fortunately most of them also enjoyed taking a bath and cleaning up a bit before home time.

Cruizy enjoyed a good bit of fun swimming in this midday heat today. She is definitely a water baby!!

Buddy got to enjoy his last day of the year with all of his friends having a super social day.

Walkin' the Bark Wednesday packs

Lots of fun for the morning pack charging through the jungle and keeping cool under the trees and in the shady zones. Lots of cuddles for everyone on a great last Wednesday of the year.

Our afternoon pack had some good fun and a special day for diesel as we had a nice secure spot to let him be off leash the whole time. And he was a perfect boy!! Kyah was happy having some water to cool off in everywhere she found it. Haha.

Welcome back for our last week with the MadVenture Monday pack. These puppers were all so very happy to be back having some fun after a wee break last week.
We had some great fun catching up with all our friends on this nice cool day, playing with the toys and doing an epic treasure hunt.

Wow what a great week with the adventure dogs conference on board a cruise ship. What a great way to learn and enjoy. 2 days of learning then 2 days on the islands followed by another 2 days of learning before landing back in Brisbane this morning. Now it's time for the very tedious wait until my flight home tonight (shouldn't have listened to anyone who said I wouldn't make my short connection and ended up changing my flight).
We have learnt so much from some very incredible presenters, experts in their fields and can't wait to apply and share the knowledge we have gained.
Hours of sitting and getting a good mental work out was nicely balanced with a few hours a day in the gym to keep me from going physically insane.

Thanks to my wonderful mum for coming along and keeping me company on the ship.
Thanks to Fur Kids for telling me about it in the first place.
And loved some of the new friends I met along the way and look forward to the next adventure dogs conference.

As we head off for a week of epic learning and great fun we want to remind you the dreads of the central Otago summers.

Barley grass and toxic algae seasons are in full swing. If your heading out to waterways this summer please be sure to check for algae conditions and familiarize yourself with what to look out for Incase the signs are not up yet.
Currently the warning for butchers dam is already out, I'm sure there will be more to follow soon.

As for the nasty barley grasses, we have a few areas we are no longer visiting due to these spikey little seeds of doom. Despite always doing our best to avoid them being in central Otago it really is everywhere. Please make sure to give your dog a thorough check over after their adventure days Incase any have been missed on their checks while we are out and about.

Our last morning trip before we shut up shop for a week and these guys were so happy to get out for a good run and splash around. Living their best life.

I'm now off to the airport to learn lots of exciting things to bring back and implement into everyone's lives. Can't wait!.... Yes I'm a super dog geek I just can't ever know enough about these incredible animals.
