And that wraps up an incredible 7 days aboard Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas with the Activity Dogs Cruise. 4 days of dog focussed seminars with excellent presenters including Steve & Vicki Austin, Jen & Ryan Tate, Sandy Sharpe, Dr. Xavier Schneider, and Kaye McGhie. Sad to be getting off a lovely ship but very much looking forward to seeing our own dogs ❤️ (the only thing that could have made this cruise better than it was!). Now to start the journey home 🏡🐾🐾🐾

Plenty of seminars & learning aboard the Activity Dogs Cruise but now time to relax by the pool 💦🍹

🐾 The first-ever cruise for dogs has been announced 🐾

The cruise, sailing out of Tampa, has the capacity for 2,650 passengers and 250 dogs. Pooches will be pampered with grooming and massages, and every balcony stateroom will have a relief station.

There will also be dog shows, training classes, costume contests and parades, as well as designated dog-free zones, including the ship casino and the onboard spa.

All dogs will require a clean bill of health from their vet prior to embarkation.

Woof to that!

⚠️ TOXIC ALGAE in the Manuherekia River ⚠️

Our Environmental Monitoring team has confirmed toxic algae at several sites along the Manuherekia River, including at Galloway, Ophir (pictured below) and Omakau.

We advise that those visiting the river (especially with dogs) are mindful of the potential risk of toxic algae and avoid contact with the algae and water at sites where it is present.

With some warm weather forecast across Otago, we expect to see more naturally occurring toxic algae in the coming weeks.

With such warm weather today, it seems a timely reminder that dogs should NEVER be left in hot cars, not even “just for a minute,” or “with the windows cracked.”
Last year I found a dog locked in a car at New World supermarket when the temperature on my car read 34.5°🥺 This is completely unacceptable.

Dogs are especially vulnerable to heatstroke because they are only able to cool off through the pads in their feet and panting. This inherent susceptibility means that a dog can die of heatstroke in just 15 minutes. High temperatures are even more dangerous for brachycephalic breeds, or short-faced dogs, like pugs and bulldogs, who are particularly susceptible to heatstroke because they can’t pant effectively. 🥵
Consider these alternatives:

✅ Leave your dog at home if you can.
👉If you need to take your dog with you, shop at an animal-friendly store. You might be surprised to find out that your favourite stores are dog friendly... call and ask them!
Mitre 10, Nichols & Jamie's Jewellers are all businesses in Alexandra that allow dogs inside (add the ones you know about below! 👇
👉Bring friends and family with you. Having other people with you can be a great alternative to leaving your dog in the car. They can go for a walk, hang out outside, or sit in the car with the AC on while you run your errand.
👉Instead of eating indoors, try an outdoor cafe. Many allow dogs to sit underneath the table and will even offer your dog a bowl of water! ☺️👏

Add any other dog friendly shops you know about below! 👏👇

Warmer weather in Central Otago means barley grass which for many dog owners, also means an extra expense at the vets getting them surgically removed 💰😰 Did you know we can give your dog's paws a close shave, reducing the chances of your dog picking them up & helping you identify them before they become a problem? 🤔 It may not be the prettiest look - but it sure beats spending hundreds at the vet every season! Get in touch today to get your dog's paws shaved for $25.

About Fur Kids

Fur Kids was established to offer dog owners a ‘bow’tique, intimate, warm and inviting place to take their dogs whilst they work.

We offer weekday care on over an acre of land just outside of Alexandra, Central Otago. Our play park is securely deer fenced and gated and boasts plenty of trees for shade from the hot Central Otago sun, large overhead sprinklers, a large shelter and a kiddies pool to play in over Summer. We even make homemade ‘pupsicles’ for the hot days, are climate controlled for hot and cold days and have plush lounge suits and lamb skin rugs for the cooler days.

Dogs are fully supervised and encouraged to play and run around our big, open yard. Dog numbers are limited to 10 per day so each dog is assured to have plenty of cuddles and one-on-one attention - we treat your dog like our own! We are proudly a cage and kennel-free facility and we’re confident you wont find another daycare like us.

Drop your pooch off for a day to socialise with other dogs. Refer a friend and BOTH get a FREE visit!(terms and conditions apply.)
