We are thrilled to be celebrating after passing our DogsNZ Canine Good Citizen assessments this morning 🀩 Whisper flew through her Foundation & Bronze, and VΓ© aced his Silver & Gold. Gary also passed Foundation & Bronze with Maggie, and Silver & Gold with Ruff Tuff. πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆπŸ₯‰ We are so proud of our dogs on their excellent performance after months of training πŸ’ͺ😌 VΓ© was particularly challenging in training the 'retrieve a dropped article' over the last few months - but we smashed that barrier and he's now retrieving like a PRO πŸ™Œ Ribbons & Certificates will arrive in the post πŸ’Œ

Thank you to those Fur Kids clients who came along to the dog behaviour & training seminar last night, I hope you enjoyed it and learned a couple of new things ☺️ I really enjoyed sharing the knowledge I've gained over the years through formal study and in practice, working with your dogs every day. Just ran into a woman at the linger and die dog exercise area.while training two of my dogs. She had two dogs off lead. One of her dogs wandered off and she said to me "Oh, he will be doing a big poo but I just pretend I didn't see it". 😳🀒 How are there still dog owners like this?! This is inexcusable! She then took her two dogs off for a big walk up the river, without picking up after her dog.

❗️RABBIT CONTROL - Mutton Town - UPDATE Monday 8 July

In addition to the areas below (Cromwell Cemetery, Clyde Cemetery and Half Mile Recreation Reserve) we are also carrying out rabbit control on a block at Mutton Town Road in the same period i.e. third week of July. It is the corner block of the Clyde – Alexandra Road and Mutton Town Road (see below - and please note the caution regarding dogs to keep them out of these areas while the operation is underway).

***

Weather permitting around the third week in July Council will be undertaking rabbit control using Pindone on the following areas:
- Cromwell Cemetery
- Clyde Cemetery
- Half Mile Recreation Reserve.
Council under the Otago Regional Council Pest Plan like all landowners is required to keep rabbits under control on its land. These particular areas have seen an increase in rabbit activity with graves in the cemeteries being used for burrows.
With the commencement of native plantings on the Half Mile reserve by the Haehaeata Trust, keeping the increasing rabbit numbers down in this area will give the new plantings the best chance to flourish.
Signage will be erected to advise of the operation and the public are urged not to take their dogs to any of these areas while the operation is underway,
Where possible rabbit carcasses will be regularly collected.

Got a call from ORC's CO Head of Pest Control on Friday. He has reviewed the information and doesn't believe there was a fault with distribution at their end. If anyone witnesses any further pellets within the dog park please let me know and I will pass onto him. From there, he can organise an investigation.

⚠️ Please be advised that poison pellets have been found WITHIN the confines of the Clyde dog park ⚠️
(Will call ORC in the morning)

I posted this on my personal page but it's relevant for the whole community, so I'll share it here too...
Some info on dog registration fees which have risen $17 this year. Note that our council gives NO incentives or discounts to desex your dog, be a responsible owner or have a secure property (like a lot of other councils). Also, the bylaws state dog registration fees should also go towards community education like training classes/information on responsible dog ownership. "Reg the Dog" has also been axed. In the comments section, the council states this increase is because there are more dogs roaming town which has meant more work for them, requiring these price increases... Is it time we are harder on these owners whose dogs repeatedly roam the streets? Is it time to hold these irresponsible owners accountable rather than making cute comments on social media about how their dog is a rascal for getting out again but had a great day around town?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, once or twice can be forgiven - some dogs are escape artists and accidents can happen (they can be quite creative!) but these dogs who get out time and time again? The repeat offenders? They are now costing ALL of us extra money. How do you feel about that? I had our (new) dog get out last week. Saw him behind the house within a few minutes. Immediately found his escape route and have made absolutely 100% certain he will NEVER get out there again. Why? Because I care about my dogs & I'm a responsible owner.
Some questions for dog control to justify our rates:
πŸ€”Where are the bins along the rail trail, the river and other popular dog walking tracks?
πŸ€”Why are there no community education programmes/brochures, booklets or flyers?
πŸ€”Free poo bags like other councils?
πŸ€”Incentives for being a responsible dog owner? Instead of punishing everyone for the actions of a few.
😩Not to mention an adequately fenced dog park! Lord knows we could have some community education on dog behaviour and body language at that place with all the fights that happen there!
What do we actually GET for our rates?
πŸ‘‰ Did you know that Cougar Security operates for the council during the weekends? You can't tell me they have the same dog knowledge as councils dog control officers. How much do they charge to contract to the council? Are their weekends rates why we are facing a $17 increase per dog?
There are many unanswered questions and for the $$$ that's received, it looks like all of it is being spent on irresponsible owners. How do you feel about that? I know I'm not thrilled.

About Fur Kids

Fur Kids was established to offer dog owners a β€˜bow’tique, intimate, warm and inviting place to take their dogs whilst they work.

We offer weekday care on over an acre of land just outside of Alexandra, Central Otago. Our play park is securely deer fenced and gated and boasts plenty of trees for shade from the hot Central Otago sun, large overhead sprinklers, a large shelter and a kiddies pool to play in over Summer. We even make homemade β€˜pupsicles’ for the hot days, are climate controlled for hot and cold days and have plush lounge suits and lamb skin rugs for the cooler days.

Dogs are fully supervised and encouraged to play and run around our big, open yard. Dog numbers are limited to 10 per day so each dog is assured to have plenty of cuddles and one-on-one attention - we treat your dog like our own! We are proudly a cage and kennel-free facility and we’re confident you wont find another daycare like us.

Drop your pooch off for a day to socialise with other dogs. Refer a friend and BOTH get a FREE visit!(terms and conditions apply.)
