Did you know we can organise worming tablets for your dogs to be delivered directly to your farm mailbox? VetServe is a convenient and easy way to manage an effective programme and can be arranged by phoning your local clinic.

Why is this important? A worm burden will not only affect the health and energy levels of your dogs but also help complete the lifecycle, and spread, of sheep measles.

We recommend a monthly worming regime to maximise your working dog’s performance. Monthly dosing is required as the ovis tapeworm matures in 35 days so dosing 3-monthly is not enough.

Droncit® Controls all tapeworms including Taenia ovis (Sheep Measles). 1 tablet per 20kg body weight.
Drontal® AllWormer effectively controls roundworm, hookworm and all tapeworms and is safe to give to puppies.
We recommend:
• Month 1 = Droncit,
• Month 2 = Droncit,
• Month 3 = Drontal

Puppies = Require worming every 2 weeks from birth until they are 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months, then monthly thereafter.

If you would like any further information or would like to sign your farm up, contact your local clinic:

Scabby mouth vaccine.
Make sure your technique is correct:
The vaccine uses a wire applicator to create a scratch in the skin. These are usually given in the thigh or axilla [armpits] at tailing. They should be deep enough to scratch through the skin surface but not draw blood.

The weather has not been very easy to predict, with Cheviot reaching 20°C at the end of July and then the cold storm which threatened snow a few days later. We are all hoping the bits of rain and spells of sunny weather will help get some grass growing.

Worms have still been an issue this winter, with the hot cold weather and low grazing, animals have been picking up more worms and therefore putting more eggs down. How heavily contaminated are your pastures?

So you don’t get any nasty surprises, it might be worth doing some FEC and checking on animals through the spring. Be prepared for a wormy spring!

Abortions in ewes.
If you start experiencing frequent abortions in your ewes (one every 1-2 days), do not make assumptions; have those lambs tested. Even if your vaccines are up to date, it is worth finding out why, in case there is something that can be done now or next year to prevent it from happening again!.

BVD in your cattle.
Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) can have significant impacts on cattle health and productivity. It's crucial to be aware of the signs, risks, and preventive measures to keep your herd healthy.

What is BVD?
BVD is a viral infection that can lead to reproductive issues, weak calves, and decreased milk production. It can spread quickly through a herd, making early detection and management essential.

Signs to Watch For:
Persistent infected calves (known as P*s)
Respiratory issues
Poor growth rates
Abortions, mummified foetuses and still born calves.
Alive, weak or deformed calves.

Our team at North Canterbury Vet Clinic is here to help you with BVD management and any concerns you may have. Don’t hesitate to reach out for advice or to schedule a consultation.

Stay informed and keep your herd healthy!

Feeding Orphan Lambs
With more and more adorable lambs starting to pop up around the district, there is no doubt that some orphans will be starting to make themselves at home with you!
In the first few days of life, it is essential that lambs are fed colostrum. Give 5 warm feeds spaced out as evenly as possible. 125ml per feed is required for an average 4kg lamb (total 15% of the lamb’s body weight). From five to seven days old, lambs can be gradually transitioned onto cold yoghutised milk, to help prevent bloat.
The table below details Anlambs' guidelines for feeding orphan lambs. If you have any questions about feeding orphan lambs, get in touch with your local NC Vet clinic.

Sudden death in your cattle? – let’s post-mortem them!
Common causes of sudden death include: clostridial diseases, bloat, toxic plants, intestinal/GI twists, acute salmonella and nitrate poisoning. Getting a diagnosis is key with these sudden deaths, so please ring the clinic to get us to come out to investigate and carry out a post-mortem examination. If you are getting a few sudden deaths over winter it could be worth vaccinating against clostridial disease next season.
Please contact any of our clinics for further information.

A very heart-warming moment for North Canterbury Vet Clinics to be the recipient of the inaugural Mayoral Business in Community Award. Here's what Mayor Marie had to say ahead of making the presentation at the annual HDC Community Services Awards ceremony last week:

Craig and your team, you have worked hard to build the resilient community that is made up of resilient individuals; in awarding this award, I acknowledge your courage, commitment and cooperation. Service to your community requires all these factors, but they are the foundation principles that anchor our District. The old African proverb says: If you want to go fast – go alone; If you want to go far – go together. Thank you for working together.
As a local business you are switched on, you work hard to support our people and economy, and this award recognises your achievements. It is a tough economic landscape, you need to keep your finger on the pulse, but despite that you remain connected to the people, particularly at times of stress. For all of these qualities I have much pleasure in recognising North Canterbury Veterinary Clinics Ltd for the inaugural Mayoral Business in Community Award.
I have seen first-hand the support and guidance given by this team dating back to the drought in 2015-2018, the Canterbury, Waiau and Kaikoura Earthquake sequence and now currently with the Adverse Events Committee which is supporting our primary producers through another tough time, which is stressful for many.
I would like to particularly mention Ian Page, who sits on the Drought Committee chaired by Dan Hodgen. His willingness to contribute with his technical skills and advice to provide support to help our people through is appreciated. You feel this impact too. Many of these clients are your friends and neighbours but your professional guidance has supported us all.
Thank you to the team for their continued advocacy, sponsorship and support to our District. I warmly congratulate you all. Please accept the Inaugural Mayoral Community in Business award for 2024 in recognition of your continued service to community.

Abortions in cattle:
After the late pregnancy scan, abortion rates exceeding 2% are a cause for concern. A range of factors can cause abortion, but below are the most common:
· Bacteria including leptospirosis, salmonella, campylobacter
· BVD
· Ingestion of branches or needles from certain pine and cypress trees
· Poor quality silage/hay
· Sub-lethal nitrate poisoning
Monitor your cows and heifers closely over the dry period, and if you notice more abortions than usual, collect an aborted foetus and the placenta and bring it in for investigation/sampling. Handle with care and keep separate from all other cattle, and remember, aborted material can be a risk to you.
