A horse with colic is every owner's fear! Colic refers to abdominal discomfort and can have a variety of causes.
Signs to look out for include inappetence (lack of appetite), not passing many faeces, not wanting to work, and kicking at the belly.
If you have any concerns, swift veterinary attention increases the likelihood of a good prognosis, so early intervention is key.
Seresto collars are the favoured flea and tick treatment for some farmers for their working dog team as they are the most cost effective and longest lasting with 8 months protection. Until the end of October farmers can receive $15 off the RRP of $103.75, plus you can enter in the draw to win $800 worth of vouchers from New World. See your local Clinic.
Calf with B1 Deficiency prior to treatment and full recovery (warning - video content may disturb).
Cattle and sheep depend on their gut bacteria to produce thiamine also know as B1. Changes in the rumen microflora (change in diet, increase grain feed, change from poor quality grass to good lush pasture, and added stress) can change the production of B1 by the bacteria. Also excess sulphur can also lead to B1 deficiency.
B1 deficiency initial signs are animals that are depressed, appear to blind and start to stagger/lose coordination. Eventually they can’t stand up and may start to thrash around extending their neck.
However, there is a treatment. By giving an injection of B1 animals can be treated.
If you have seen any of these signs or similar, please give your local vet a call to discuss.
