What minor wounds can I treat at home and when do I need to see the vet?

Small minor wounds can be looked at, at home. This means keeping them clean and dry and ensuring that other chickens are not pecking at the wound.

Wounds and feather loss can be caused by injurious pecking by other birds. This can occur when normal foraging behaviours are not met, which can lead to cannibalism.

It is important that your flock has sufficient environmental enrichment to keep them stimulated. Separating the injured hen may be beneficial until the wounds have begun to heal.

If wounds appear infected, or are not healing, or your hen appears dull or ill, you should seek advice from your vet.

Occasionally your chicken may lay something which looks like a misshapen rubbery blob!

This is known as a lash. It’s not actually an egg, it is the tissue from the oviduct sloughing away and occurs mainly in hybrid breeds of chickens, or other heavy layers.

Chickens tend to be fine after laying a lash, but it is advisable to keep an eye on them just in case; on the odd occasion, it can indicate an infection.

Whilst the warmer months bring benefits to chicken owners with extended daylight hours, better weather conditions and, of course, more eggs, it is important not to forget that Summer can be a stressful time for your flock.

Chickens can suffer increased stress from situations that arise during the Summer months, including parasite infestation, heat stress, increased egg laying and new arrivals to the flock, and if left unsupported nutritionally this can lead to poor welfare and even health issues.

Show your flock some extra lovin’ and treat them to these top Summer products: Nettex Poultry Seaweed, Vit Boost Tonic and Egg and Shell Support Powder, designed to support your chicken’s health and productivity during periods of stress. BUY ONLINE or find a stockist at www.nettexpoultry.co.nz

A Hendy Tip from our Chicken Whisperer: If you're new to rehoming ex-commercial layers, remember they are used to competing for their feed. They will take a while to adjust to the new regime and can be inclined to be a little feisty around their food and water stations. I would advise adding Nettex Vit Boost Tonic to their water 5 days once a month as they settle in and start to improve in condition.

It's Pesky Pests season but don't get in a flap. Stick with us for regular top tips to keep your chooks happy and healthy all year round. When tackling Pesky Pests such as mites and lice it is important to be vigilant. Remember to check your chickens and housing regularly and catch any outbreak fast – it makes it that much easier to deal with.

a. Housing: Check the housing carefully every week when you clean it, pay special attention to all the nooks and crannies, ends of roosting bars and the
nest boxes.
b. Chickens: Keep an eye on your flock for any unusual behaviour, give them monthly health checks after they have gone to roost. Look out for eggs and black critters crawling at the base of the fluff around the vent area, as this is where mites and lice like to hang out.

top tip

If you are thinking of introducing new chickens to your flock when remember before buying chickens always check them carefully by parting the fluff around the vent area to see if you can spot any eggs or little black critters. Be sure to spot and tackle any pest issues before introducing them to the rest of the flock.

Repost from Nettex Poultry UK:
Our Anti-Feather Pecking Spray is a dual purpose spray to help prevent pecking among chickens and cleanse minor wounds. Emily Murdoch had great success with one of her girls who had self plucked due to lice, and then formed a habit. Two spray intervals was all it took to give her feathers the head start in rejuvenating and allowing the pain to pass.

Please don’t feel that you need to lag the coop or add any extra bedding to keep them warm; chickens have a body temperature of 105 degrees and wear thick feather duvets, so they don’t feel the cold like we do. The coop needs plenty of overhead ventilation to prevent a build-up of condensation and ammonia.
