🚧 HEALTH WARNING - LAKE HOOD 🚧

Te Whatu Ora ‐ Waitaha Canterbury has issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (planktonic cyanobacteria) was found in Lake Hood

People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid contact with the water until the health warning has been lifted.

People are advised to avoid contact with the downstream water bodies.

Environment Canterbury monitors the lake weekly during summer and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality that are of public health significance.

'Dogs have a special way of stealing our hearts with their unconditional love and loyalty.' As a district, we are fortunate to have a dog club where you can support your dog's growth becoming even more special.

The Mid Canterbury Dog Training Club offers dog training to a wide range of people and their dogs. Classes include ‘Basic Manners’, Competition Obedience and Agility classes, and. more recently, the very popular and rapidly growing Scent work Trialling.

𝑰𝒏 𝑱𝒖𝒍𝒚 2023, 𝑩𝑹𝑪𝑻 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒘/ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 $6,000 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒅 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒐𝒈 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃, 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔.

Every year, Mid Canterbury hosts four weekends of championship competitions that attracts a large number of entries from across the South Island. Bringing visitors to Ashburton not only benefits the club but also businesses in the district, and we are proud to be a part of this effort.

People are being told to stay out of the Ashburton River at State Highway 1 following a health warning after the finding of potentially toxic algae. People should avoid the area and animals, particularly dogs, should not be allowed near the water until the health warning has been lifted.
It follows an earlier warning for the river at Hills Road. Environment Canterbury is monitoring the water quality.
