Twenty years ago, I was a very happy, dog-loving 20-year-old girl. I had been grooming for around four years, and I had a whole life of loving dogs ahead of me. Things had been going great. I had broadened my horizons and was pursuing other dog fields, such as vet nursing, dog training, and dog agility. I lived and breathed these four legged magnificent creatures.

One day, a customer came into the shop and handed me a book. She knew how much I loved my job, loved my animals, and loved learning, upskilling, and educating myself on everything dog-related. She had a feeling that I might like this book. She was right—I never looked back. Reading this book was a pivotal moment for me in my dog grooming career. I truly do not think that I would be the animal handler that I am now had it not been for this book. I do not think that I would have been able to understand the language of dogs as I do now if it had not been for this book!

It very simply, in layman's terms, breaks down the language of our beloved dogs. It teaches you how to understand them as dogs and not as humans. Often, we get caught humanizing our dogs or trying to understand them as humans, which nearly always fails us, as they are dogs. Dogs are a pack animal and as evolved as they are they still do not think or act as humans.

This book is the reason that I can work with so many troubled dogs. It's the reason I can understand the dogs that come through my doors and ensure that they feel secure, safe, and calm. It's the reason that I can take the most problematic, timid, anxious, stressed and aggressive dogs and work with them when many others will not and often have great success with turning them round. These are the dogs that have for whatever reason, become highly dangerous and problematic to deal with and often their owners have given up hope. This book played a crucial role in how my relationship with my favorite animal in the world developed. It taught me to speak dog. It taught me to understand what they were saying to me and how to become not only a pack member but a pack leader.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone, no matter who you are—whether you're a pet owner, a breeder, or involved in the dog industry somehow—or quite simply, if you just love dogs. I wish that more dog owners and dog lovers in the world could understand the language of a dog. Truly understand it for their dogs sake.

-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

This weekend my grooming buddy Cathy Wallace and I took our Southern Skills Seminar North and held it in Nelson!
What an awesome weekend filled with learning, education, beautiful pooches, laughs and a great bunch of people who all got on like a house on fire.

This is Clifford the soon to be big red dog 🥰🐾 Clifford the Irish Setter puppy has a very clever mummy. She wants him to be happy and at ease with being groomed for his adult life and she knows the key to that is being introduced to grooming as young as possible. She knows that while physically he does not need a groom, emotionally he does. This is Clifford’s second visit. He’s learnt from the first one that it’s not too bad and neither am I. He’s going to go on and have a life of stress free grooming thanks to his mum being super smart and starting him early! He’s a bit of a dude to be honest 😍🐾 #puppy

Today we had an Australian Cattle Dog in for a groom, a breed that was developed for herding cattle over long distances in the outback. Now don’t get me wrong I love dogs. Every single one of them. But every now and then one comes along and knocks your socks right off. A real connection forms and for whatever reason the little buggers work their way into your heart and there they stay forever. This handsome little chap took my socks about 7 years ago and now that he’s 15 I count every single groom I get with him as a blessing. This is Zoom, the Jack Russel Terrier, Keeper of my Socks and Permanent Inhabitant of my Heart. Isn’t he fabulous ♥️🐾
