✨ Patient of the Week - Maddie's Pups ✨

Nurses Tia and Amy got to take some time out from a busy day to help health check and vaccinate five beautiful Burnese Mountain Dog puppies. Dexter and Millie are pictured here, but their siblings Charlie, Jack and Beau were equally cute!

✨ Patient of the Week - Otis ✨

We saw Otis recently for dental x-rays, and a scale and polish of his teeth. Otis, like many pets, gets very nervous coming into the clinic.

To help alleviate his anxiety, we dispensed some medication for his mum to give at home the night before and morning of his procedure. Otis' mum told us "he was like a different dog" and the the medication really helped to calm him down.

Once admitted for the day, Otis was able to lie down and relax in his kennel, whereas previously his whole body would have been shaking. He even felt relaxed enough to enjoy lots of cuddles with the nurses.

Making your pet's visit as enjoyable as possible is important to our team. If your pet has an upcoming appointment, and is likely to be anxious, please let us know and we will do our best to help out.

✨ Patient of the Week - Gracie ✨

Gorgeous little Gracie came in for her first vet check and vaccination recently and melted all of our hearts. Gracie had a difficult start to life, coming from a large, unwanted litter, where she had to compete for resources.

Luckily, she was rescued by her new mum, and is getting all of the TLC that she needs to grow into a strong, healthy pup. We can't wait to see how much she has grown by her next check up!

✨Meet The Team - Heenal Mehta BVSc✨

Dr. Heenal joined our vet team earlier this year and usually works on Fridays and Saturdays. She is our ray of sunshine and her bright, bubbly personality (and laughter) can usually be heard throughout the clinic.

Dr Heenal loves a challenge, from complex surgical cases and medical mysteries, to behavioural science. She is an exceedingly dedicated veterinarian, who puts her all into every case.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, occasional painting, and loves to dance!

✨ Patient of the Week - Helia ✨

Miss Helia stayed with us recently for a dental procedure. She needed to have six painful teeth extracted to improve her quality of life, but kidney disease and intraoperative hypotension (low blood pressure) meant that she was classified as a high risk anaesthesia patient.

To mitigate these risks, Helia stayed in hospital with us for three days on IV fluids, and had regualr blood pressure checks (and cuddles) from the nursing team. We tailored an anaesthetic protocol to suit her specific needs and had a team of three nurses and a vet on hand throughout her procedure.

It was a huge team effort, including CareVets staff, Helia's mum, and grandma. We always get particularly attached to our long-stay patients and we are very pleased to say that Helia is now recovering well at home ❤

✨Meet The Team - Amy✨

Amy is our lovely vet nurse assistant who you will see at reception on Mondays and alternate Saturdays. She also joins us on Wednesdays, where she develops her surgical nursing skills under the guidance of nurse Tia.

In November, Amy will finish her studies through Vet Nurse Plus, and join the team on a more regular basis. We love Amy for her calm presence, desire to learn, and the delicious home made snacks that she shares with the team.

Amy has a keen interest in animal behaviour and rehabilitation, while aiming to provide fear-free nursing care for animals in the clinic. Outside of work and study, she enjoys spending time with her dogs Marli & Shelby, going to the beach or forest, and is also a keen hockey player.

✨ Patient of the Week - Keeva ✨

Keeva spent the day at CareVets Hobsonville recently for Medial Patella Luxation (MPL) surgery to repair her bilateral luxating patellas.

The term luxating means out of place or dislocated. Therefore, a luxating patella is a kneecap that 'pops out' or moves out of its normal location. Pet owners may notice a skip in their dog's step or see their dog run on three legs; then, suddenly, they will be back on all four legs as if nothing happened. The condition is most common in small breed dogs and can lead to arthritis as they age.

Keeva was exceptionally brave and well mannered throughout her hospital stay. Since her surgery, she has started physiotherapy and is recovering well at home with her loving owners.

Our Top Pet Safety Tips For Halloween

1) Steer clear of sweets
Many candies include toxic ingredients like xylitol, and should be kept out of reach of pets.

2) Careful with costumes
Watch out for smaller parts and loose threads that could pose a chewing or choking hazard.

3) Mind the decorations
Motion activated decorations and unpredictable lighting has the potential to startle a pet.

4) Watch the front door
Keep pets away from the doorbell and occupied with toys and treats.

5) Walk them before dark
Take your dog around the block before the trick-or-treaters flood the streets.
