We have had Boss in for training over the last 4 weeks, and it has been a lot of fun. I’ve enjoyed meeting his owners, visiting their workplace on multiple occasions to mend some of his human bonds that have gone awry with their colleagues, and working on his gameplay and obedience.

Due to his history of multiple bites and involvement in dog fights, ongoing management will always be required. However, I’m confident that Boss and his humans can achieve great harmony and start living a less stressed life together where all parties thrive

One of the biggest mis-conceptions is that your dog will recall with food alone, in the real world, with a dog who is regularly feed and satiated. Basically, all pet dogs. Want a banging recall? then you going have to be open to more than just cookies as motivation!

This video speaks for itself!SO many people are told that you just need to use a “Higher value reward” or “Tastier treat” to stop your dog from running away ...

Man, what a journey.
Cyrus, you have taught me a lot. He has been the most extreme fear case I’ve worked with to date, and at times I really struggled to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At points, I thought, “There is no way I can get this dog to play with me; it just isn’t happening.” I even questioned if I was ever going to be able to get him to lie down in public or deal with me clapping (as the first time I clapped, he literally—not metaphorically—pooped himself and the moment you go to a new location he would often poo himself ).

I have learned to trust the journey, and sometimes things just take longer than we had expected (10 weeks).

With me, I have got him to a very livable place. I know his limits, and he trusts me not to push them too often. He won’t ever be a take-to-the-city-for-a-street-walk sort of dog and will always have a flight reflex in certain contexts, so a degree of management will always be needed. But, we can live a really cool life, and he can have plenty of joyful moments.

While the hard part is not done, we now have to try to transfer this to Mum and Dad, which will take some time as there is a lot of trust and leadership that has to be rebuilt. But for now, I’m just enjoying reflecting on the journey.

Thank you .nz for this! You guys are awesome. This moment in time is such a cool want to capture.

100% that is why I cringe when I hear trainers saying “I can fix that” “we fixed that” etc. Speaks
More to ones ego and lack of experience than
anything else. Training is about decreasing the frequency of problem behaviours

The most important life skill that you can teach your puppy (any dog actually) is how to play with you. Properly play with you. With rules and objective.

This is far more valuable than chasing sits, downs and loose leash walking. Get the foundation right, and everything else comes.

I’m so excited to be officially TWC certified. What a journey it has been; I have learned so much more from this course than I could have ever dreamed. But to get certified was no easy feat. First the intense theory test. Tests have always been tricky for me, particularly written test, as reading a writing have never been a strength of mine. Once I passed that, we then went onto the practical tests. In these test's it makes you prove that you can, actually do it TWC way.

Before I did the course, I found myself in a bit of a rut, and I needed something more… I knew I could be better and achieve more with the dogs than I was. And in my search, I found more and more of the same old information being regurgitated and spun as something special.

Then I found Ivan, and everything he said was aligning with where I felt I was going with my training.

So it was hard to come to grips with the initial investment, but let me tell you… it has been the best investment I have ever made into my career and my passion.

Training Without Conflict course is a fresh way of thinking. With modules that explain complex theory in a way that many will never understand without themselves doing this course and practical sessions that leave you aware of the knowledge and skill that Ivan possesses.

So much so, that I just had to fly over to Florida and see it firsthand. Let me tell you, he is the real deal. Skilled, knowledgeable, and has a natural ability that is a joy to watch.

After doing the course, it is crazy to realize how little I knew and how little many professionals actually know. There is a saying “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” – Mark Twain

Man, that is true for the dog training industry.

It's cool to be the first in NZ to be TWC certified, but I look forward to the day that more Kiwi trainers do the TWC course and stop settling for the same old, same old training.

To my Kiwi trainers, take the step and do this course. No matter how long you have been training, there will be things in the course that challenge the norm, that no trainer in NZ or even the world can teach you.

This is just the start, I have so much work to do on myself, and I must keep going into the playground and trying to apply these skills and concepts that are fundamental to TWC."

Thank you to Ivan Balabanov Training Without Conflict for all you guys have done for me!

This sweet girl is enrolled in our puppy development program. She is very sweet, but also showing a lot of signs that you typically see in a young dog that often ends up having “reactivity” (you don’t see it manifest until 12-18 months of age typically).

This can be curbed with the right training and management.

We have to focus on how she feels, not just what she can do.

We also have to be careful that I’m our attempts to teach loose leash walking that we don’t create frustration which in turn leads to leaking and vocalisation issues later on.

We can avoid a lot of this with good smart training. Plus the right training tools, which for her we will be using a Flexi leash to building motivation, and encouraging exploration.

Man, he is getting big.

Did you know we offer day training? The day is a combination of pack socialization and one-on-one training.

Once a week, you drop your dog off to us for 12 weeks (which equates to 12 sessions).

We exercise, socialize, and do 1-on-1 customized training for your dog. At the end of the 12 weeks, we do a complimentary session showing you what we have been working on and giving you the skills and tools to keep going with it.

Samson’s mom said, ‘I want a dog that can just walk past distractions and ignore them,’ so this has been a huge focus. We are also working on recall, pack socialization (so that he can learn how to be around different breeds and not take things too far).

We all love this boy so much; he really has stolen our hearts ❤️

Not everything is achievable. But when you do start to achieve something with a dog that an owner never expected to be achievable, that is a very emotional and beautiful moment. 🙏🏻

I don’t post really any videos of my dogs’ training, as when I train my dogs, it is really for me and them. It’s something super special that we do together. But I want to encourage you to train with your dog; it’s about collaborating, growing, and working together.

Have fun, train something, and make sure it taps into your dog’s genetic desires. Dedicating time to work together to build something fun and cool is priceless and done right is just fun for all involved.

This is my young dog Janet, we muck around with a few different things.

This is a clip from Nova’s first heeling/loose leash walking session.

It looks pretty different from how most teach it 😉

No sticking to the driveway, going left, going right until the dog is so bored out of their brains that they don't even want to go on a walk anymore…

Some struggle to get their dogs to walk with them, others can easily get their dogs to walk with them but then their dogs lose the confidence to be away from their handler (we call this a sticky dog, and it is often created via handler error)

Good training should be able to give you both.

A dog that can work and be free away from you without conflict and a dog who can calmly be with you without conflict.

I would rather see a dog who doesn't walk on a loose leash than a dog who is stuck behind you unable to leave even you were to tell them it was ok to leave.

But ultimately, with smart training, the right tools and techniques we really can easily have both.

And that is what we always are aiming for. Confidence when independent, and confidence when in behaviour (heeling)

A lot of this boils down to clarity and how predictable the human is holding the leash.

Watch this space and we will uploading more videos in a few weeks when we have her heeling down to a T 😉

The biggest battle, is getting owners to change how they live with their dogs, not just how they walk their dogs.

When encountering challenges during training sessions, I never focus exclusively on the adjustments required from the dog.
It’s *imperative that I acknowledge my own part in the process. Self-awareness is paramount, evaluating what I (can) do on my end is often what leads to the to the breakthrough.
