Zummy Update

I’m terrible at posting videos on social media. Sometimes I’m good about it, then five dogs come and go, and I realize I haven’t posted anything.

But I thought I’d give a little update on how Zummy is doing. I’m super stoked with his progress, and we’ll resume more 1-on-1 sessions with his owners in the new year to make sure we stay on top of things.

Just getting back from Florida and feeling super inspired.

In every industry, there are levels of skill. For example, in football, you have average players, good players, and legendary players. The jump from good to legendary is so extreme that very few will EVER achieve it.

Dog training is no different. You have average trainers, good trainers, and a very few legendary trainers.

Every time I watch Ivan Balabanov problem-solve, train, and teach, I am left in awe of a true legend—someone with a level of skill and knowledge that is truly the highest I’ve ever seen or observed, a level that very few trainers will ever witness or learn from in their lifetime. But the reality is, it is accessible to all through the TWC course. Yes, it’s pricey, but so is GOLD, as it is a rare asset. 😉

So if you’re out there and want to take your training and knowledge to a new level, you should be selling your soul to take the Training Without Conflict course so you can start to have access to a rare asset.

I can’t wait to hopefully return again next year. But for now, there’s lots to digest and plenty to work on. Bring on 2025 👊

Now apply this to dog training… sometimes I feel people want some magical moment where all the problems are gone. But actually, more often than not. It is the 1% changes done well, that lead to great success.

Often, the changes start with the person on the other end of the leash, not the dog… 😉

Did you know positive reinforcement can easily create suppression?

This is something I learned the hard way with Mia. She is a pretty low-drive dog, so it manifested itself even more than if I had, say, a Malinois, where a degree of suppression for many people wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

But for her, it was really gutting, particularly because I was following everything all the “top trainers” were selling, and after all, their Malinois could do it.

I followed and bought many different training programs on heeling to try to teach her how to do a nice obedience heel, doing all my foundations like a good boy, making sure she had a “strong muscle memory,” and ensuring she received nothing but positive reinforcement so that she would love it.

Well, man, was I wrong, and I sure did waste a lot of time and money. The more training I did, the less attitude she had. She was getting more and more locked up.

She would do the things, but her tail was low, and I could tell she just wasn’t loving it. (Again, no pressure in the training was used at all.)

I then reached out to a pretty well-known trainer and paid for a Zoom session, which really didn’t help as it was pretty much just the same stuff regurgitated.

Then I started to dive into Ivan Balabanov work, and that’s when I began to learn truly about play, the power of negative reinforcement and the importance of attaching an emotion to a behaviour (not just the behaviour itself).

This is why I recommend his Cornerstone collection to everyone and believe in it so much. Which can be found on the Training Without Conflict website.

(That’s if you don’t the money for his course, which is just on a different level again and I do recommend saving up to do the TWC course as the above videos are included but they’re about 5% of the depth of his course)

Anyway! man, it was mind-blowing—the difference in her attitude and desire is night and day. We ditched the cookies and focused our energy where it really matters, which in turn felt like we weren’t even having to chase pointless drills and exercises that, in the end, don’t actually help.

With all that being said, there are levels of trainers, and I believe he is one of the best and everyone in the industry would benefit from watching his
“Chase and Catch,”
“Possession Games,” and “Teaching the Out,” particularly pet dog trainers.

But with the above issue the true “aha” moment came from watching his “Heeling 2.0” lesson.

That is where he demonstrated and articulated exactly where I believe many others and myself are going wrong.

So if you haven’t already, watch the videos above and revisit them every 6-12 months. Once you watch them, you’ll go away and start applying what you’ve learned. I guarantee you’ll need to come back and watch them again.

Enjoy training guys. And remember positive reinforcement alone, doesn’t always equal a happy dog 👊

People ask us how the dogs are with the baby. This is how they are: he respects their space, and they respect his. Together, we just live. No training—just some common sense and a small bit of management by the adults. When Noah is in that awkward age where he is crawling but we can’t have a conversation about the rules yet and can’t watch him because we are doing dishes or cooking, he will be in a pen by himself. No jokes—our kid will have his own pen. Once he is old enough, he will learn the rules. What I want you to take note of is how little I have mentioned the dogs and what they have to do or not do. We are the adults; it’s our job to look after all parties equally.
