Debbie completed a five year undergraduate veterinary degree at Massey University in New Zealand. On graduating in 2008 she was awarded the Pfizer (Zoetis) Internship at the Veterinary Specialist Group in Auckland, New Zealand โ€“ the opportunity to do this internship in her first year of practice was a wonderful experience and it was a privilege to work with the talented team of specialists at the Veterinary Specialist Group. During this year Debbie also worked as an emergency veterinarian on evenings and weekends at the Animal Emergency Centre. In 2009 she moved to Australia to undertake a further internship at Veterinary Specialist Services in Brisbane which gave her more experience working with specialists in surgery and medicine. A residency in Veterinary Dermatology followed at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre from 2010-2013. In May 2013 she was accepted for further training at Cornell University in New York State with two of the most respected and best known veterinary dermatologists in the world, Dr Danny Scott and Dr Bill Miller. In 2014 Debbie passed the Fellowship exams of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Dermatology and is now a Registered Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology. She has presented several times at the Science Week conference on the Gold Coast of Australia โ€“ in July 2010 on the topic of canine lymphoma and in July 2013 on the topic of feline pemphigus and recently gave a presentation to the Auckland Veterinary Society on the topic of feline atopy. Publications include an original research paper on feline pemphigus and a case report on pyoderma gangrenosum for Veterinary Dermatology, a paper on hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the September and December 2009 issues of the Australian Veterinary Practitioner, which also won the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists medal and an undergraduate article on the subject of total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy in the newsletter of the Companion Animal Society of New Zealand. In January 2016 Debbie left Melbourne and moved back to Auckland. She has started a brand new dermatology referral business called โ€œThe Skin Vetโ€ which will begin seeing clients on 5th April 2016.

As a behavior veterinarian, I understand how distressing fireworks can be for our canine companions. Here are some expert tips to help you and your dog get through this challenging time:

1. Stick to their normal routine. Make sure dogs have been walked before dark though.

2. Bring them inside. If taking your dog out to toilet, do so early, and on lead. DO NOT take them out to watch...

3. Set up a hidey-hole/den and sound proof it if possible.

4. Close the curtains and turn on some background noise. It will reduce the suddenness and drown it out.

5. Some dogs like thundershirts, so if yours is used to one, pop it on early. Don't try it for the first time tonight though! Calming caps or ear covers may also help.

6. Give them something delicious to eat or keep them occupied with food puzzles (e.g. a kong with meat in it)

7. Stay with them, and yes you can reassure them! If they want to be stroked, do so. If not, just stay nearby. Stay calm.

8. Feed high value food (if they can eat...) while it's happening. e.g. a peice of schmacko or a temptation for each bang.

9. Use Adaptil diffuser, collar or spray.

If your dog really struggles, there ARE things we can do to help. Medications can help this year, and we can look at behaviour modification (desensitising) techniques for next season.

Noise sensitivity is something I can help you all with, so please- reach out and we can prepare for New Years or next fireworks season!

Have a very happy and safe new year all! :) x

Weโ€™re big supporters of โ€˜Happy Visits.โ€™ Here we have Joe (fox terrier cross) showing us a very impressive chinrest whilst visiting our friends at The Skin Vet. For many animals, vet visits can be scary. Happy visits are a great way to introduce your pet to a new vet and help them feel more comfortable about their next visit.

Thank you, Ellie and team for accommodating, Joe. And, well done Joe and his guardian Toni for all your work. Joe and Toni are working with veterinary behaviourist, Dr Emma Ruck and our trainer, Angela Fletcher from
