Christmas came early thanks to Petdirect who dropped off a ton of goodies at the SPCA Mangere Centre just in time for kitten season. Here is Jamie Kit enjoying some of the treats while he is recovering from the removal of his damaged eye. Later he very much enjoyed the box for anyone wondering. Thanks PetDirect! 🥰

Guy Fawkes is here, and fireworks can be stressful for our pets! Here are some tips to help keep them calm and safe during this festive season:

1️⃣ Create a Cosy Space – Set up a quiet, comfy spot indoors where your pet can feel safe.
2️⃣ Turn on Background Noise – Keep the TV or some calming music on to help mask the noise of fireworks.
3️⃣ Stay Close – Your presence can help soothe your pet if they feel anxious.
4️⃣ Toys & Treats – Keep them busy with their favorite toys or treats to help distract them from the noise.
5️⃣ Try Calming Products – ThunderShirt, calming sprays, diffusers, and supplements can provide extra comfort for pets feeling stressed by the sounds and sights.

🐾 Keep Lollies Out of Paws’ Reach: Chocolate and sugar-free treats (especially those with xylitol) are toxic to pets. Instead, treat them to pet-friendly snacks!

👻 Costumes Optional: Only dress your pet if they’re comfortable. If they seem stressed, a festive bandana is a great, safe alternative!

🏠 Create a Safe Space: Halloween excitement can be overwhelming. Set up a cosy, quiet room where they can escape the hustle and bustle.

🎃 Beware of Decorations: Keep candles, glow sticks, and decorations out of reach to avoid burns or choking hazards.

As a Vet & greyhound owner, I know the importance of dental health. Greyhounds are prone to dental disease, so I stay on top of Ace's dental hygiene to prevent plaque, tartar, & bacteria buildup.
Here are my top tips to keep your dog's breath fresh:

1.
Regular Brushing: Brush your pet's teeth daily or at least several times a week using a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste. Regular brushing helps remove plaque & prevent tartar buildup.

2.
Dental Chews & Treats: Provide dental chews & treats designed to reduce plaque & tartar. These products can be an effective supplement to brushing.

3.
Professional Cleanings: Schedule regular professional dental cleanings with your Vet. These cleanings are essential for maintaining oral health & addressing issues that home care cannot.

4.
Healthy Diet: Feed your pet a balanced diet that supports dental health. Some pet foods are specifically formulated to reduce plaque & tartar buildup.

5.
Water Additives: Use water additives that are designed to reduce plaque and freshen breath. These can be an easy addition to your pet's dental care routine.

6.
Chew Toys: Provide appropriate chew toys that help clean teeth and massage gums. Avoid hard toys that can fracture teeth.

7.
Regular Checkups: Include dental exams as part of your pet's routine veterinary visits. Early detection of dental issues can prevent more serious problems. Serious dental disease can cost thousands to treat, so early detection, treatment, and prevention is the key.
