STEWART CHARLES HOLLOWAY (CHARLIE)

Charlie slipped away at 8:40pm on Tuesday the 3rd of December 2024, at North Shore Hospital. Many family and friends gathered around Charlie's bedside, and he went peacefully surrounded by love.
Much loved husband of Tina, father of Len and father-in-law of Koko.
A funeral service will be held for Charlie at The Ranfurly Hall, 903 Kaipara Flats Road, Kaipara Flats, on Wednesday the 11th of December 2024 at 1:30pm, followed by a private cremation.

We have a very special young man joining us on Saturday night at the
Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights parade.
Marcus is just 4 years old, and he has decided that when he grows up, he'd like to be a "funerator"
Now, don't go searching your dictionaries for this one people, it's a Marcus trademark word.... invented when he couldn't quite get his lips around the words "funeral director"!!!! 😁
Marcus at 4 years of age, has somehow managed to understand, that being a funerator means taking care of people after they've died, saying nice things to them as you say goodbye, and looking after the practical details, like the burial, so their families don't have to worry.
Marcus has already had some funerator experience, when he recently stepped in to take care of one of his dogs puppies (who sadly died at a day old)
He found a box (an iphone box) and snuggled the puppy into it with some soft tissue to keep her warm.
Dug the grave, with a bit of help from his assistant (AKA his dad) Placed the lid on the box and reverently lowered the puppy into the grave.
Said "I love you" to the puppy.
Dropped 2 beautiful flowers into the grave with his head bowed. Then helped fill in the grave and made sure it was all tidy, before declaring the service complete.
Oh my heart!!!

We were blown away with the story of Marcus, and his comprehension of what it means to be a "funerator" 🥰
So we invited him to ride shotgun in the hearse on Saturday night!
So... if you're at the light parade and see our hearse with this wee man beaming his incredible smile at you, please wave at him... it'll totally make his day.

When loss comes into our lives, our children look to us to discern how to be. Will they be ok? What do they do now?
Remember amongst it all, to cry. Let your children know it's ok to cry. To be sad. Being sad is a normal part of a life. So don't rush to hide sadness from your children, lest you teach them that they need to hide theirs from you.

lately, when I need to pray
I go to the church that
has no doors
and where the walls are made of carved granite ~
I sit under it’s moving roof
on a pew that smells
like fresh pine
and fold my hands quietly until God joins me ~
here in this most ancient of churches,
I watch a dozen fat rainbow angels
dance in the baptismal font
and wonder when I too will be made anew ~
there is a special kind of holy quiet here
that rings much louder than any fat
church bell I have ever known
and the silence often rattled my ribs ~
it’s choir loft is high up a birds nest
and it’s confessional is a breeze
that asks me to speak my sins
and I do, and then they are carried away ~
the longer I sing psalms in this church
the shorter my memory for all of
my past mistakes become
and that is when I hear the voice of Love speak
“oh tired light, oh wounded heart,
oh my child of crumbling grace,
come plant your feet in this Eden,
come rest in this sacred space
oh weary traveler, oh somber fire,
oh shaking heart that is prone to fear,
come lay in My ribboned water
come to fully know that I’m right here
oh wilting daisy, oh dying star
oh broken song that needs a name,
come sit with Me among the wild,
and then you’ll never be the same “
God and I take turns saying all we need to say
I speak in short heavy jagged breaths
and God speaks in thin long pauses
and this goes on until the sun begins to set
that’s when it’s time to leave
and even though I go home
I’m always still there
in the antiquated church
of trees and valleys
where foxes are lectors
where horizons are steeples
where clouds are vestibules
where campfires are incense
where time is a gospel
where the great flow is a sacrament
where forests are community
where a little piece of me always still remains
talking to the voice of whispering Love
as I watch trout be slain in the spirit
and I can’t stop marveling at the altar of creation ~
