A Tale of Transformation. By Julie Nolan - Howlistic Help dog trainer. Nine months ago, I met Stanley, this lively little Border Terrier with a heart full of big feelings and uncertainty about other dogs. His amazing pet mum, Hannah, was having a tough time managing his increasing reactivity, which often turned into attack mode. 😬The first thing we did was redirect Stanley’s energy and focus. We made sure all his needs were met, helped him feel safe, and gave him the choice to move away from other dogs. This was the foundation we used to build on his existing training. We introduced new cues and rewarded calm behavior, gradually shifting his mindset from defensive to receptive.Stanley's initial responses were pretty intense—lots of avoidance and stress signals like frequent lip-licking, yawning, and lying down, refusing to move, escalating to intense growling and lunging at other dogs, especially on a leash. We taught Stanley to disengage from other dogs, using a range of cues to help him make better choices and gain distance as needed. Combined with teaching him to slow down his greetings so he could continue to think. We also added calming exercises, games, and routines to help soothe his nervous system. Giving him stress-free, off-leash freedom to explore and play without pressure was a game-changer. 🐶We also made sure to care for Stanley’s overall nervous system by managing his skin and gut issues and leveraging his love of training and play. 🐾Sam and I worked as a team using calm, stable dogs at variable distances to assist in his training and to help Stanley gradually improve his comfort level around other dogs.I’m so proud of Stanley and Hannah’s progress. Their bond has grown so much stronger through love, patience, and dedication. Now, Stanley happily runs and plays with his friends, both new and old, enjoying every moment of his renewed confidence. 🥰A message from Hannah: “A note to say that it has been a joy to see Stanley’s

🌟DROP🌟 Puppy Training
🐶 Playing with a toy or item that your dog likes to hold in their mouth.
🦴Step 1. Place treat on dogs nose to cause them to drop the toy. Feed the treat as soon as they let go of the toy.
🦴Step 2. Say “drop” one second before placing the treat on your dogs nose. Feed the treat as soon as your dog lets go of the toy. Don’t repeat the word drop!
✅Top tip stay at step 1-2 for pups and dogs just learning this skill and when dropping anything new.
🦴Step 3. Say “drop” feed the treat when the dog drops the item
In this training you are teaching “drop” and “get it” and it should be fun! Dog retain what they’ve been trained much better and longer when they were having fun while learning!
Keep your sessions short and sweet and have fun.

CHIPPY PAWESOME TRAINING WALK WITH MILO 😍🎉🐶🐕🐾
Started with 5 mins inside the outdoor pen at home.
Then we drove to the park and had 5 mins by our selves: practising recall, let’s go and leash walking ✅ When we first saw Milo and TJ I had chip on leash, asked him to jump up on something then while he was up there I unclipped his leash front front clip and told him “free go say hi” (still had 3m long line attached to back clip dragging on ground)
It was such a beautiful time and Chippy really impressed us all!!
He was happy to see Milo but after 5-10min of run and play he was super repsponsive to his well known cues whilst next to or coming away from Milo. He was soo good! Even TJ said “good boy!!! Chippy!!” And “wow he’s progressed so much since I last saw him!”
While next to Milo chip successfully responded to:
✅Chippy touch
✅Chippy down
✅Sit
✅Stay
✅Free
✅Let’s go (come away from Milo towards me- wow!)
✅Up
✅Off
✅Collar hold = sit
✅Free - go swim (swim in long grass rather than sea haha)
🌟The “let’s go” away from Milo was huge!!! So cool!!
We finished with a quiet down stay for 40 seconds or so before we parted ways. Chip was so good not looking back to Milo at all I could even drop his long line as we walked away. Superb!!!!🌟🌟🌟
Happy first birthday Chippy! I’m so proud of you and it’s a privilege to get to work with such an awesome dog and family. Go Team Chippy!!! 🎉💛🐩💛🎉

Such fun with Ziggy today! Todays focus was Touch ( touch her nose to my hand in a distracting environment) and Leave meaning look to me and leave that interesting thing alone. I also wanted to work with less food treats, and making her work harder for her rewards.
We started at Windsor reserve, just following me as I changed direction and pace, saying Let’s Go and This Way, the game being the reward. I definitely got puffed first 😅
Along the waterfront, some lovely polite greetings with people, no jumping at all ✅
Hop up and off and Stay in a Sit until released ✅
We practiced Touch in short bursts in different locations, taking just 10 treats and then ending the training saying All Done and releasing her to keep sniffing and exploring.
💕 The best was Leave practice. We started out just putting some food under my hand and marking and rewarding when she backed off and looked to me, then saying Leave/ Leave it as I put the food down. The best moment was when I asked her to Leave my treat pouch and she backed off, sat and looked at me - good girl Ziggy!!
As we walked back to my car she was very interested in a woman’s shopping bags, I said Leave once and she looked to me and trotted over - superstar!!
Love spending time with Ziggy, surely the most photogenic dog in Devonport 😍

- As soon as he’s eaten the treat
- Call your dog to you, just once
- “Milo”
- Deliver treat to his mouth when he comes to you
- As soon as he’s eaten the treat
- Say “find it” toss 1 treat to the other side
- Repeat
- Keep it short and sweet. Once you run out of your 10-15 treats, stop and have a break.

❤️🐶Molly - Pro Puppy Session with Julie 🐶❤️
✅A Pro Puppy Session is a 1:1 one hour long training and socialisation outing for pups under 6 months old with a Howlistic Help Dog Trainer. We always send an update to pet parents after each session. Here’s Julie’s update after Mollys Tuesday Pro Puppy Session.
“Such fun with Molly looking extra cute in her new harness today 😍.
We started just taking our time in your kitchen, building some good habits that include her sitting for me before I say hello and getting her to sit for her collar and harness to be put on. It was very exciting for her so I wanted to take my time and allow her to calm a bit before leaving. As we leave I also ask her to sit so I can lock the door, so when she’s bigger she won’t pull me ( or you) down the stairs!
We go to the grass at the front so she can toilet before getting in my car ✅
🌺 She’s pretty reliably putting up her paws on the back seat of my car which makes it easy to just pop her in.
🌸 We went to Bayswater Cemetery and headed for the bridge which is a place I love to train as it’s got railings on both sides- great place to drop the leash and do some fun recall and play pass the puppy as in the video. You can see in the video Molly is a little unsure of my friend at first so we made it really fun for her to run towards us by running backwards and she’s having a great time 🎉
⭐️ As well as food she loves pats and lots of praise so use these lavishly to let her know she’s doing the right thing
🌸 She made some new dog and human friends and I was really impressed that she didn’t jump on people at all - just sat in front of them for a Hello - this is great and we want to encourage it!
🌸 She offered to jump up on a seat so I used this as a little training moment to get her to hop up and off something. I wouldn’t do this lots as she is still so little but one or twice was fun and will help when you want her to jump into
What’s your favourite trick to show off to your friends?? 🤪🎉😍🐕
“Peek a boo” or “middle” with one ridgeback is impressive. With two it’s just hilarious. 🤣😂😍🤪🐕🐕👏🏽👏🏽

Play with your dog. Because that’s why you get a dog. Because it will improve your bond. Because it will help your dog respond to you when out and about. Because it’s fun and you love them! ❤️💙💜💛💚💖

Haggis 🐕🌊☀️🏖🥰
Looking for his dream home. 😍
Clients and friends of mine that live in Milford are relocating at the end of this year to Sydney and are not taking their beloved dog with them.
He is an absolute sweetheart and a super cool dog and is looking for his forever home.
I am wanting to introduce to you: Haggis
2 year old lab X huntaway cross (perhaps Great Dane?!) ♥️🐕
Haggis has been raised with daily off leash walks at Milford beach. 🏖
His favourite pastime is chasing seagulls. Haggis gets along with all dogs big and small and is a total smooch with people too. When he isn’t enjoying the great outdoors you will find Haggis snoozing the rest of the day inside or cuddled up with his people. 🥰
Haggis is well trained and has great recall and other basic cues. Loves his doggy crate for night time sleeps. He is very food driven and also loves to play with his toys. Tug and fetch! Woo! 🥳🐾
Personally I think Haggis is a dreamboat. He is a smooch, a sweetie and a lot of fun to be around. He’s smart and loves training but is also just happy being a loved part of the family. He is a big tall boy but still loves to have a cuddle in your lap if you let him. 💖
I’ve known these guys since Haggis was a wee pup and have kept in touch since. Haggis has grown up with two teenagers and the lifestyle of going for daily walks on the beach. 💛🐕☀️🌊
Haggis is looking for a loving family that will continue his awesome active lifestyle including lots of cuddles.
If you are interested in talking more about Haggis, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Serious inquiries only thanks. ❤️🐶
Coco had SO much fun on her first training walk back since we went into lockdown. I’ve missed this smiley girl so much! She showed off she remembers all of her training. She loves doing these Spin & Circle tricks! 😍❤️😂 She also did heaps of awesome, speedy recall and lovey loose leash walking. Go Coco! 😍♥️🐕 @cocoloco_thebullterrier

Riley Girl had an awesome coaching session with her mum. We discussed using real life rewards in training. E.g wait when we ask, release to muddy puddles as real life reward! Riley blowing bubbles was just too cute. 😍🐶❤️

What a mini training session should look like. 👀
🌟 Starring Mac - during his second ever mini session on SPIN 🌪
Grab 5-20 treats or time your mini training sessions. 30 seconds - 2 minutes is ideal!
⏰
Keeping your training sessions short and sweet makes training fun and effective. 🌟
The new cue “spin” is an invitation to receive reinforcement, contingent on performing the behaviour. ✅
Don’t be a boring trainer. Don’t over do it! Keeping sessions short means you and your dog are fresh and enthusiastic! 🤩Drilling over and over and over again can poison your cue, your dog might become less enthusiastic and then the behaviour will eventually fall apart.😵💫
Use high value reinforcers, food your dog really loves! 😍
Use an all done signal to let your dog know that mini session is finished. 🙌🏽Follow up with something fun for your dog. You can do a treat scatter, give them a stuffed Kong, or play with a toy together. 🥳
By doing something fun after the all done signal, your dog won’t find the end of a training session punishing, meaning they will continue to be enthusiastic during the entire session. 🐶👏🏽
Remember praise is free! Have fun! And if you or your dog are getting frustrated, go back a step in your training, take a break and don’t hesitate to reach out to me for help. ❤️🐾
Spin is just one of the cool tricks we take you through step by step how to train in the Good Dog Level 1 Online Course. Click the link below for all the information and to enrol to take your dogs training to the next level!
