I’m really late with August puppy class photos and I missed a couple of the puppies too😩

There was rain most Saturdays and epic thunder and lightening during our last sessions so we were quite grateful to have the use of the building ⚡️🌩️⛈️

Our next puppy classes start on Saturday 14th 🐾

I’m sick, and it’s my birthday tomorrow 😩. Both events change my dogs routine but don’t worry, my troops are rallying and Putu is taken care of 😊

If you’re on your own and you’re sick, I recommend using a flirt pole, a treat hunt or an off leash explore to entertain your dog while you minimise your movement 🥰

Teddy’s mum and dad have made my day by emailing to say that Teddy is making wonderful progress. He’s walking really nicely on lead, recalling consistently in public and is able to interact sociably with other dogs 👏🏼❤️

I make no apology for advocating for force free methods in puppy classes. Some guardians like Teddy’s mum and dad instantly understand the benefits of training with kindness. Some guardians challenge and question everything which is great too ❓
Some guardians, are sadly more reluctant to embrace force free training because there’s so much misinformation on the internet and traditional “trainers” who rely on intimidation and punishment to teach 😔

If you’re keen to train your puppy, enjoy their company, build a bond that’s based on trust and help them navigate our crazy world, get in touch to book for our next classes that start on the 14th of September 😊

There’s a lot of bad advice on the internet. This is something a client of mine read online and tried, to stop unwanted barking. The dog initially barked at big dogs. Now he barks at big dogs, noisy children and motorbikes if they pass too quickly. Their intention wasn’t to punish their dog or to make him more anxious, just to stop the barking 😔

Get in touch if you need help to overcome a problem or re-build trust with your dog 😊

If a dog trainer has an e-collar in their ‘tool box’, do not employ them. Even if they aren’t using it on your dog, do not employ them. If they have photos of dogs wearing an e-collar or offer it as part of their training programme, do not employ them 😠

I rely on people much smarter than me to read and analyse the studies. I do not rely on anecdotal evidence 🤔

Teachers, dentists, doctors, lawyers, builders, everyone has qualifications and governing bodies that uphold standards. In New Zealand, professional dog trainers belong to the APDTNZ (Association of Professional Dog Trainers New Zealand) ✅

You might be happy getting your mate to cut your hair or even cut it yourself (I do!), but where your dogs welfare is concerned please employ someone with credentials, experience and ethics 😊

This post was prompted by a trainer promoting their services in my area, offering e-collar training from $1750 😫 People might think that because it costs a lot, it must be good; it’s not 😔

Dr Jess Beer from gave this amazing presentation on pain in pets. It’s definitely worth watching as all of our pets will at some point need us to notice their need for medical help 🏥

Copy this link https://youtu.be/HPCTIAnL3X4?si=hMMVQ8HYNdPDXJdo or go to You Tube and search for Companion Animals New Zealand, webinar 2 ✅

I’m not a vet and I don’t have any medical training but the first thing I look for is signs of pain or discomfort. Not all conditions are visible or are present all the time so ruling out pain via a pain assessment is really important 🧐

The fact that even the biggest dogs will cower when a human is displeased should demand we treat them with kindness, not take advantage of their desire to please us.

If shouting “No”, “Hey!” or “What did you do???” elicits a “guilty” response from your dog, know that they’re not feeling guilty but are trying to stop you from being mad 😞

If you’re dog is doing something you don’t like and you don’t know how to stop the behaviour, please talk to a qualified professional.

Until we meet in class I don’t know what each of the puppies will be like or if they’ll get on (much like real life 😁).

We spend a bit of time in each class watching their bodies and learning how they communicate with each other. It’s not guaranteed they’ll get on but there were a few friends made 😍

It was so lovely to see Parker, Athena and Blue again and really impressive to see each of them mix so well with all the other dogs too 😁

Parker was such a timid little boy in his first puppy class, it was a real highlight to see him playing with Lobo this week and Athena last week 🤩

Listening to your dog and supporting them is the best way to let their confidence grow. Don’t force them to interact or do more than they’re ready for. Encourage but be patient 😇

If you’ve got a really confident puppy, help them listen to other dogs, rewarding breaks and disengagement 👏🏼

Our next class starts on August 10th in Silverdale. Get in touch to enrol.

I frequently see people being dragged behind their dog to greet someone the dog wants to meet. The humans often say “he just wants to say hi”. I would like nothing more to sit on my backside and eat Carmelita Movenpick. There won’t ever be enough Carmelita Movenpick to satisfy me and if your dog enjoys meeting people, letting them meet ALL the people won’t satisfy them either. They will just want to meet more and begin to expect it too. 😫

To help them learn that meeting people is more likely to happen when they have paws on the ground and walk without pulling, you can teach them at home, marking and rewarding as they walk calmly past family members. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

You can make it really easy and start with a dull person at a distance, gradually decrease the distance and ask the person to be more interested and animated as the dog progresses. Get in touch if you need help 😊

The positive reinforcement for me to get up at 5.15am is 1. A happy dog 2. A good start to my day (exercise releases endorphins in me too🤩) but today I was also rewarded with this spectacular clear sky and full moon. This looks like a black and white photo but for you late sleepers, this is what winter mornings can look like 😍

If you are taken by surprise when your dog suddenly snaps and lunges at another dog you may be missing a few signals (or they may no longer give you many signals). 😫

From behind, you may see changes in how your dog carry’s their ears and tail; a furrowing of their brow, elongation of their neck, lowering or raising the height of their body, fixed direction of their head and even pulling towards another dog. These can all be signs they don’t want to interact 😕

When looking away and moving away aren’t effective (or possible) often, dogs will select a more noticeable way to communicate their unease. 😬

When their unease goes unnoticed again they may escalate further with less and less warning 🫣

Look for loose wiggly bodies and keep on leash greets to a minimum. Get in touch if you need help. 😊

16/07/2024

By lowering their heads and pretending to sniff, dogs may be signalling that they are not a threat and are being non-confrontational 😊

It can be a way to diffuse excitement or nervousness, helping them (and the other dog) to stay calm in social situations.
It can be something dogs suddenly do mid-play to take a break 😅

Sniffing instead of greeting can also signal to the other dog or person that they’re not interested, pretending to be more interested in the “smell”. (they could of course actually be more interested in the smell on the ground!) 😊

It’s a natural behaviour that helps them navigate their social world so if you see your dog doing this, marvel at their emotional intelligence 🤩

When I see someone I know and pretend I don’t, it’s often that I’m too busy to chat or I’ve forgotten their name. We all do it, don’t we? 🫣🤪

I’ve been learning Mandarin for 23 days and I’m loving it. I will always have a Scottish accent so I doubt I’ll ever be brilliant at speaking it 🤪 but Duolingo makes the learning process really fun and easy. 😊

Teaching your dog should make them feel the same sense of enjoyment, success and achievement. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but learning together is so good for both of you. Do More With Your Dog has free tutorials and lists of things of things you can teach your dog. Maybe you can start a 23 day streak and Do More With Your Sunday 😍🤩

Our latest puppy graduates 😍

The youngest class were all small breeds. Alfie and Parker gained confidence; Bandit learned to like his collar being held; Tank became quieter and calmer with each class and Rufus is now in touch with past graduates who live close by 😍

By sheer coincidence, the older class were all bigger breeds. They all got to meet and play 1:1 with each other in-between exercises. Their play style and enthusiasm changed depending on who they were with (except Stella who was just the same wiggly butt with everyone 😁). Their humans all have a better understanding of their dogs and what they’re “saying”. They also have the skills to help them learn to do useful stuff like keeping paws on the ground when walking past someone 🙌

Jax was brought to class by his doting foster parents. He is looking for his forever home so if you’re drawn to that soulful face and you can continue to build his confidence, get in touch and I’ll connect you with his people ♥️

Our next class starts on the 6th July and subsequent class dates are listed on the website (follow link in bio) 😊

Are you confused about how to safely socialise your puppy? It’s scary. You want to do what’s right and avoid putting their health at risk.
The NZ Vets Association created a fabulous PDF which you can download from my website. Go to the Puppy Classes tab and scroll to the bottom ✅

If you’re getting advice from anyone, check it’s up-to-date. Good trainers, vets, breeders, groomers and daycares will keep informed of current practices and new research 😊

Feel free to share; after all you don’t know what you don’t know 🤷‍♀️

Jack doesn’t have 99 problems but he does need help with a few things 😊.

To help mum see the light at the end of the tunnel, we talked about all the things he doesn’t have a problem with 🤩

His relationship with his feline brother is the envy of most dog and cat households 😆

Write a list of all your dogs good qualities and achievements and pin it to your fridge. Keep an eye on the problem you’re trying to solve but focus more on the good stuff. It will help you keep going 😍

If you think your dog is ignoring your recall cue, try adding a wave 👋 . Add this after your verbal cue and practise at home first. Your dog obviously has to be in view for them to see your wave 🙄

Adding a physical cue after a verbal cue helps your dog understand what’s being asked but it’s also useful if your dog loses their hearing 🧏‍♀️

Even if your dog hears well, when they’re outside at a distance, the wind, the contour of the land and other environmental noises make it difficult to pinpoint where you are 😞

It’s super cute when you see them scanning the environment then suddenly race towards you as they spot your waving arm 🤩

Get in touch if your dog doesn’t come when called. There may be another reason why your cue isn’t working 😊

...preventing overreactive behaviour is the first step ✅ Stay alert, and use the environment (bushes, trees, cars and bins). I use the time of day to my advantage too and avoid busy times when most other dogs are out ✅ We also use some treats and pattern games when the other dog is yapping at us 😬

It’s difficult to change feelings and behaviour if you don’t work at it consistently. The good news is, training sessions should be short. Short sessions are easy to track too so you should notice progress 😁

Hachi is 100% successful in passing another dog on the opposite pavement without barking or lunging. She still stares too much but reducing that is our next goal 🤩

Changing feelings and behaviour can be a lonely path. Get in touch if you need help 😊

Do More With Your Dog is one of my favourite websites for teaching your dog new tricks but Google Maps is my favourite App for finding wee gems across the city. Start near your house and zoom in to find all the little paths and reserves that connect the streets near you 🧭

Think of the road as lava. Stay away from roads, walk on berms and if you find something as picturesque as this image, tag me. The prize is a very happy dog! 🐾😊

Few dogs like all dogs. Most like some dogs. When your dog meets one that likes them and they play well together, make friends with their human 👋

The best way to meet new people is with a child or dog in tow. If there’s a good connection ask, “do you live locally”, “do you usually come here on Saturdays?”
Or make a statement like “they get on really well, would you like to organise a playdate for them?” 😊

Whenever I felt nervous about initiating a conversation I remember an old Scottish saying “to be a friend is to do a favour; to make a friend is to ask”. ❓

Ask them to meet up, even if it is just to do you a favour and provide a pal for your pooch ❤️

Rewarding the quiet little puppy with praise, treats, play with a toy or a cuddle is the thing that will make the puppy offer that behaviour again in the future 👏🏼

We’re bombarded with negative stuff all the time. Even the algorithms are wired to reward antisocial comments and argumentative online behaviour 😩

As hard as it is, don’t take the good stuff for granted. Notice it and reward it 🤩

Putu wears a Pet Therapy bandana to identify him when he's working but the only other time I ask a dog to wear a bandana is when I need them to smell Adaptil. If they don't want to wear a bandana I'll suggest an Adaptil collar or room defuser.

Every day I'm asked to partner with bandana companies but I don't see any other need for a dog to wear a bandana (with the possible exception of reducing washing for a messy eater or excessive drooler).
Does your dog wear a bandana for any other reason (that isn't aesthetic)? Educate me...

Learning to read dog body language isn’t complicated. If you can spot when your partner has had a bad day at work or when your child has had a bad day at school before they’ve even spoken a word, you are reading their body language. Dogs may use different parts of their body and use them differently from other dogs too but if you spend time observing them in their natural happy state, you will more easily spot apprehension, anxiousness and fear 😧

You can practise reading both humans and dogs by hanging out at cafes or the beach and just watch. How do you think they’re feeling? 😑

When you know a dog is not happy, giving them space and time may be the best option. Comforting and soothing may also work but the solution should also be dictated by the dog 🐾

Get in touch if you’d like to learn how to read your dog 😊

End of another puppy class yesterday and it never ceases to amaze me how different all the puppies are and how much they change in such a short space of time too 😍

Penelope arrived in class just 5 days after joining her new home so class was particularly daunting to begin with but by giving her loads of space and listening to her, she was cool as a cucumber by week 4 and made good pals with Skye 😊

Buddy, Tavra and Stella had the most adorable play together in the last session. Again, possible because we set them all up for success through short, successful introductions and closely supervised controlled 2:2 play/recall practise 🙌

Siblings Percy and Cassie had completely different play styles and temperaments. Percy and Cash hit it off, while T***s and Cassie matched each others mellow demeanour 🤩

Understanding how all of their dogs communicate and play is one of the most important experiences for the humans 🤔

Simba missed the last class because dad forgot but he is doing so well and like everyone else, dad has the information to continue with training.✅

It’s only the end of class. Life with puppies continues but their guardians are equipped with the knowledge to teach their puppies using kind and effective methods 👏🏼

Our next class starts on the 1st of June. 🗓️
Get in touch if you’d like to set your puppy up for a good start in life, meet like-minded people and puppies in a safe, clean space where classes are run by a qualified, experienced and registered dog trainer. 👩‍🎓

1. Being stared at can be intimidating for the dog on the receiving end 😬
2. The dog that’s doing the staring often needs help to look away ❤️

If your dog stares at, or eye stalks another dog, help them look away. 👋
You could call their name, make an unusual sound or tickle the side of their back leg. If they are really struggling, do a u-turn whereby you walk in front of your dog to break their vision, possibly with a lure on their nose to help them follow you round ⤵️
Use obstacles in your environment to stop them staring further 🚗 🌳

As a general rule, if a dog stares for more than 3 seconds, I would help them ⛑️

In the image, Kong was struggling to look away so we increased his distance from Florence for the rest of the exercise ✅

Interestingly, blinking has the opposite effect. If your dog is watching you, you can blink slowly at them and they will relax and may even blink back or close their eyes. 😌

Get in touch if your dog has a staring problem 😊

There’s great deals on agility equipment at The Warehouse and GrabOne. If you don’t have the space or budget for agility equipment, you can achieve the same results using kitchen chairs 🪑

As the nights close in you can watch free tutorials online at Do More With Your Dog and train from the comfort of your own home 🏡

Teaching your dog how to do tricks is more easily achieved by short, 2 minute sessions rather than hours at the end of a long day. If it doesn’t perk you both up, I’d be surprised 😊
