This Sunday, two of our riders competed at the Warkworth Dressage Group competition, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and results. It’s so rewarding to see all the hard work from training at home pay off in the ring.

Abby rode Floyd (RP Nirvana) and placed 2nd and 3rd in her classes.
Yoyo rode Hazel (Descarado TSH) and placed 3rd and 5th in her classes.

We’re incredibly proud of the girls—not just for their performances at the competition but also for all the effort they put in behind the scenes during their preparation. A huge thank you to everyone who supports our riders, from family and friends to our amazing team. And, of course, a big shoutout to our horses, who always give their absolute best!

Recently at Pegasus, we've had a lot of exciting activities:

On Matariki Friday, we organized a successful working bee, and we're grateful to everyone who joined us. The day concluded with Lotte and Delilah winning at 1m in tip N out, followed by a BBQ to thank all those who contributed.

On June 30th, Hazel and Floyd attended a dressage show with two of our dedicated riders. Yoyo showcased exceptional skill riding Hazel (Descarado TSH), achieving 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Abby, riding Floyd (RP Nirvana), also performed admirably with two 6th place finishes. Both riders had put in significant effort during their lessons leading up to the competition, and we couldn't be prouder of their achievements.

July 9th marked another highlight with a delightful beach trip to Orewa Beach. Joining us were six of our cherished horses—Candy, Hazel, Delilah, Dundee, Hoki, and Summer—alongside several clients. It was an afternoon filled with splashing waves and joyous moments, leaving beachgoers delighted by our presence.

It's been a busy an enjoyable time at Pegasus lately!

Introducing Hazel (Descarado TSH)

Hazel is a 146cm Galaxy spring fever mare, Hazel has all the dressage buttons and is often picked by our coaches to teach our kids more advanced dressage moves. You may also see her out with some of our more advanced clients at dressage competitions as she is a great horse for this!

Hazel has quite a extensive show record with previous owners and has done a fair bit of everything making her the perfect pony to have at a riding school for the more advanced riders.

This is a great way to think about how we communicate with our horses

Imagine you’re assigned a partner project in school. Only one of you gets to read the directions for the assignment, and then you have to explain it to your partner in a language that is secondary to both of you. You’d expect some miscommunications and misunderstandings, right?

That’s basically what’s happening while riding a horse. Whether in a lesson or a ride of your own direction, you as the rider are the only one who knows the assignment. It’s then your responsibility to relay that information to your horse, speaking through intention and cues that are a second language to both you and your horse. Your horse doesn’t understand what your trainer is saying he’s supposed to do - he’s relying on you to tell him.

Keep this in mind any time you’re riding and you feel like your horse isn’t listening, or you get frustrated with a missed distance or a sloppy transition. Remember that you’re the only member of this team who knows the assignment, and your horse is relying on you to tell him the game plan. Sometimes we make mistakes in our cues or our timing, we start thinking too many steps ahead or we forget to clue him into the next movement in time. Sometimes the horse is a little distracted, or tired, or not feeling it today. But most of the time, he’s doing his best he can with the information you’re giving him!
