Did you know oral disease has become a top health problem for dogs? 🐶🦷

Here are our top tips for preventing dental problems and keeping your canine’s smile in tip-top form:
✅ A nutritious diet
✅ Chew treats can help remove plaque and provide stimulation for the gums.
❌ Watch out for wood – throwing sticks to dogs or letting your dog pick up a piece of wood can result in splinters and gum damage.
❌ Don’t let your pet chew on hard materials like stones or even some types of bones. They can wear down and even break teeth, damage gums, and lead to infection.

Ugh - That Breath!

Have you ever regretted smooches with your cat or dog? Recoiled at the fish breath? 😵🐟 Many people think it's normal. Well, it's not!

Bad breath in our pets, often called halitosis, is most commonly caused by periodontal disease. This can and should be treated as it will continue to get worse, can lead to other health issues, and most importantly, can be causing your pet pain that you may not be aware of (dental pain can be some of the most uncomfortable, as I'm sure you'll agree).

Remuera Vets is on the move.... 🚛

We are moving a few streets down the road to 23 Ascot Avenue 🏡

We will officially be in our new clinic on Monday 5th August.
With all our organising and packing this means our clinic at 5 Norana Avenue will be closed on Thursday 1st August, Friday 2nd August, and Saturday 3rd August. We will resume to normal working hours at 23 Ascot Avenue on Monday 5th August.

We appreciate everyone's support and understanding during this exciting process!!

If your pet needs any medical attention on these days we are closed, please don't hesitate to contact your nearest after hours clinic.

Hidden Surprises! 🙀

Did you know it's easy to miss dental issues just by looking at a pet's mouth with the naked eye?

This kitty appeared to have a healthy set of teeth at first glance. However, radiographs revealed significant dental damage! 🦷

Thanks to this advanced imaging, we know exactly what needs to be fixed - no more dental pain for this cat! 💕

The importance of grooming!

Our lovely patient Tinkerbell came in with intense matting on her belly and once we clipped that away & thoroughly brushed out her coat, we could almost make a new cat!

Grooming is an important part of husbandry for all animals, especially in long haired breeds and aging animals that start to get arthritic and find it harder to bend and groom themselves.

If you struggle at home, you can book in with a professional groomer or have your cats done with us 😻

The sun is out and the temperature has increased, summer is back! ☀️
Just a friendly reminder that these hot days = hot pavements, so endeavour to take your dogs for a walk early in the morning or late at night to avoid blistering their poor little paw pads! 🔥
If you’re not sure how hot the pavement is, leave the backside of your hand on the path for 5 seconds. If you can withstand it, so can your pup!

EAR INFECTIONS
- See the difference in these images of what a healthy ear VS infected ear look like!

Ear infections are one of the most common issues we see in vet consults. Here are some tips to help you recognise the signs of an ear infection, and steps to take to help reduce their frequency.

Common signs:
- Head shaking and/or itching at the ears
- Head tilt
- Discharge (brown, yellow etc)
- Odourous

Prevention:
- Keeping ears dry (towelling them after a swim)
- Regular ear cleaning (and plucking if recommended)
- Prompt recognition of signs of infection

Please contact your Vet if you are concerned.

It’s the festive season! 🎄

It’s Dec 1st & we have already had our first Christmas offender - a young Labrador who devoured some Christmas cake full of toxins such as raisins and alcohol. Into the clinic she came to induce vomiting!

Please be mindful of your animals around festive food such as high-fat meats, sweets with raisins, and especially chocolate! Let’s keep this month happy and our pets healthy 🐶😻

It’s that time of year again that many humans may enjoy, but our pets may not. Here are some pieces of advice below to help keep your animals calm & comfortable during Guy Fawkes celebrations;
- Close your doors, cat flaps and blinds to reduce the noise and light, and reduce the risk of your animal running away frightened.
- Turn on the TV or radio in attempt to partially/fully mask the sudden noises.
- Offer your pets your attention with cuddles, pats, toys and treats, without reinforcing nervous behaviour. If you are anxious, your animals will sense it!
