🌸In Loving Memory of Asia the Otter 🌸

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Asia, our beloved Asian small-clawed otter. At 15 years old, Asia was the oldest of her kind in Australasia and a cherished member of our Butterfly Creek family since 2018.

Asia’s legacy lives on through her incredible contribution to otter conservation, and she played an important role in introducing new genetics into the local Otter population. She was a fantastic mother, with her offspring now residing across the region. She brought endless joy to our visitors and staff and will be deeply missed.

We continue to support Asia's three children - Kiri, Mai and Charvi during this time of adjustment. This includes giving them full access to their den and behind-the-scenes areas so If you don’t see them out around their enclosure, please pop back later in your visit, as they may be taking some time to rest. If you have any questions about our Otters on your next visit, please don't hesitate to ask one of our friendly keepers.

Our Story

Butterfly Creek is one of Auckland's most exciting and colourful attractions. There is an aquaria where you can spot Nemo and his friends, next comes the wonderful tropical butterfly house where approximately 800 butterflies surround you. Amongst them you can find birds & lizards. Butterfly Creek hosts two giant salt water crocodiles and three alligators. There is also a bugs exhibit where you can see tarantulas up close and insects such as locusts.

In 2019 we launched our latest exhibit, Mythic Creatures, where you’ll find Dragons, Unicorns, Serpents, Aliens, magical Mermaids, the mythical Kraken and many more amazing creatures. You can also see Kiwis, otters & eels in our amazing Kiwi Forest area that opened up in 2017.

Buttermilk Farm is very popular at Butterfly Creek as it is a great way for the children to interact with the farm animals - see the goat getting milked, pat a bunny rabbit and giggle at the pigs as they snooze. There is a little train that circles the complex and also a playground for the kids to play in, while adults can enjoy a coffee and lunch from the Papillon Cafe and Bar. Butterfly Creek is a great day out suitable for all months of the year as it is 75% under cover. And don’t forget to check out Dinosaur Kingdom - an exciting exhibit where you can explore all sized dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago. We cater for group visits such as holiday programmes, primary schools, seniors, pre-schools, kindergarten, play groups, seniors, coffee groups and families of course. We provide venue hire for corporate functions, conferences, birthday parties & more. We provide educational resources on butterflies, bugs and crocodiles when a group visits us. We also run a behind the scenes - Junior Keeper programme that allows the kids to learn about animals and how to care for them. Butterfly Creek is a great day out for everyone!
