Hi, I'm Zander

I am a gentle giant that loves to interact with all people I met. Although I look like a teddy bear, I still crave lots of exercise. I would best suit a calm home, with a well fenced backyard.

If you are seeking a new fur friend to join your family visit Armourguard's Whangarei Animal Management.

Whangarei Animal Management is open to view adoption dogs Monday to Friday 9am till 4.30pm. You can contact the team by phone 094387513 or pop into the office during open hours.

Before you adopt your fur friend for following criteria needs to be met;
(1) Dog & Applicant need to be a suitable match,
(2) Property check confirms your home is suitable,
(3) Background check conducted confirming you are a responsible dog owner.

All dogs available for adoption will have passed an assessment for temperament and are required to be registered, microchipped, vaccinated and de-sexed.

What a fantastic day at the Barking Mad Market in Pukekohe yesterday!

We had an amazing time meeting so many of our wonderful supporters and their gorgeous Rotties – plus a few ‘Notties’ too! 😁 It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones.

Our Truelove harnesses were a big hit, and we enjoyed offering personalised fittings to ensure a great fit for each pup. We also did an in-car muzzle fitting for the lovely Shadow to make sure he was comfortable.

A special highlight was Brent bringing one of our rescues, Chook, to hang out with us at the stand around lunchtime – it was so lovely to see how happy she is with her new family.

A huge thank you to the organisers of the Barking Mad Market for putting on such a great event. Fingers crossed we can make it to the next one – we’d love to do it all over again!

See you all soon! 🐾

Pet ownership has been linked with positive health benefits – BUT did you know these health benefits can also extend to FOSTERS?

Companion Animal Fostering as Health Promotion: A Literature Review Int J Environ Res Public Health 2023 Jun 2 – You can read the abstract at: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37444047/

Imagine that?

Maybe you – or someone you know would be interested in Fostering?

We really need fosters – those without young children or pets in Auckland can be kept with an animal 365 days a year if they want! It really opens up a new form of pet “ownership” without the vet or food bills and without the 10-15 year commitment.

If your firm, or club has a newsletter/notice board how about helping us out by advertising this?

All they need is a securely fenced yard (written permission from Landlord if renting) and some time for caring for these gorgeous animals.

UPDATE TIME

Sorry to say it's not a HAPPY 2025 so far in the world of rescue.

In fact the last 6 weeks have been a rollercoaster and not a fun one either.

We have had, since the 01st Jan 2025, over 25 surrender queries.
Sadly, most of the time we are having to say no as we just don't have the space, or the dogs have serious medical/behavioural issues.
Also people are not fostering or adopting like they used to or we don't have the right dogs to fit their family dynamics. This is key regardless of experience or whether adopting/fostering.

We already have several dogs in our care with serious medical and/or behavioural issues and unfortunately the longer dogs are in our care the less dogs we can help overall.

Then to top everything off we had to euthanise a dog who made a bad decision. 😭This was one of the hardest yet quickest decisions I have made in a very long time. While I can't go into details about the dog at this stage, all it took was one wrong move on this dogs part thanks to being stuffed up by humans. It was heartbreaking but the right thing to do to.

We do have a couple of lovely dogs available for rehoming though and I will do a post on them soon as the sooner we can adopt them out the sooner we can help others.

It's also been a while (other than the Pet Expo) since we have had an event to catch up with you all but we do have one coming up soon and I will post this up soon.

Sorry to start on such a sad note but you can see why we have been a bit quiet! Let's hope things are on the up 🙂

A FOSTERS STORY

So 2 years ago we lost both our dogs – 3 months apart, to different cancers. Our Rottie was 12 – we were very lucky to have her so long – our other dog, a White GSD, we thought we’d have for a while yet, but we weren’t so lucky with him. After so much grief in a short space we were a bit gun-shy about owning – and we wanted to have some holidays where we didn’t have to think about sorting dog care, the freedom to go anywhere any time! – BUT the house felt empty...so we answered a call for fosters from Rottie Rescue. Why not help a dog – have them for a few weeks – maybe a month or two...and freedom to travel in between fosters! Best of both worlds!

Were we nervous about fostering? – YEP – what were we going to get? But Tracey reassured us and our first rescue arrived...she was nearly a year old, she looked at the stairs to the house – and you could see they were a new thing for her. She had cherry eye x 2, and sores on her ears. Tracey had brought the meds for her and the food, made sure we had a harness for her, and left us with instructions. We had her number, the vets details and the knowledge we had help if we needed it.

That was a year ago. We are now on foster number 6 - And ALL of them have been great dogs! We are seriously amazed how good they’ve been. The dogs have helped us heal, and it’s sad when they go…but the pay-off…knowing we have helped save a beautiful dog - priceless! And when we get updates and photos from their new homes it brings so much joy.

The Forgotten Dog’s Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas when all thru the house,
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nick soon would be there.
The children all nestled snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mom in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Knew the dog was cold but didn’t care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus with his eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog once so lively and quick,
Last year’s Christmas present now painfully sick.
More rapid than eagles he called the dog’s name,
And the dog ran to him despite all his pain.
Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and V***n,
On Comet on Cupid on Donner and Blitzen.
To the top of the porch to the top of the wall,
Let’s find this dog a home where he will be loved by all.
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa had made one thing quite clear.
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the dog for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift,
There was one important thing we missed.
A dog should be family and cared for the same,
You don’t give a gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him explain as he rode out of site,
“You weren’t given a gift, you were given a life.”

UPDATE TIME! Grab a drink or cuppa—it's a long one!

Once again I've been a bit slack on the updates--sorry,

It's been a busy few months with several trips up and down the country and the stream of dogs are not slowing down!

After the Taupo trip to drop Rosie half way to her new home Paula and I were on the road again! First to Tokoroa to pick up the stunning Kai and then drop him to his foster home in Hamilton. Poor boy has been thrown from pillar to post and needs some serious training. (No fault of his own poor Kai has been seriously let down by humans) So we have engaged a Hamilton based trainer to start working with him. He is doing well but still a long way to go.

While on that trip we got a call from Ngāruawāhia Animal Control that they had a wee Rottie X that would be up for euthanasia if not rehomed. They had tried a home but the lady brought her back next day as she didn't like her cats. Not many of our Rotts do unless raised with them but then also every cat is different!!
So Paula and I called in and met this gorgeous girl who had terrible skin issues due to flea infestation. I said yes we would take her if it meant saving her life as she is so sweet. We don't normally take in cross breeds unless asked by authorities (Police, Council and SPCA) as we just don't have the space.

So a week or so later I headed back to Ngāruawāhia pound and picked the sweet girl up. Huge thanks to the pound team who gave her several medicated washes so her skin is looking so much better. The amazing team at K9 Heaven 'The Country Club For Dogs' Auckland, NZ offered to foster her and have called her Babe. Babe is roughly 2yrs old and a real sweetheart.

Our gorgeous girl Nala healed well from her first cruciate (TPLO) surgery and yesterday had her second leg done. Poor girl had it rough the first time round but seems to be doing so much better this time. Big thanks to her foster Mum Linda who looked after her for the first surgery and Helena & Trevor who are looking after her for the second one. She knows Helena and Trevor well so it was a super easy transition. Out goes another roughly $6.5k!! She is so sweet we couldn't not help her.

The big handsome Luther is also still looking for his forever home. He seems to prefer his own breed as hasn't had much socialisation with other breeds so would suit going to a home with a female Rottie. He too has a few skin issues that look allergy based so we are working on trialing different proteins so we can see what he is allergic to. Many dogs are allergic to chicken and beef proteins. Novel proteins are always good option for these dogs, So we got in touch with our friends at Nature's Ki - Pet Wellbeing and ordered some of the Orijen Tundra which has farm-raised lamb and venison, duck, arctic char, rainbow trout, pork & whole herring. Lets hope this helps Lucious Luther sort his skin issues.

The stunning Bear has been "on hold" as we needed to do some training with him. While he previously lived with a female Rottie he was bullied by other dogs on the property which ended up with him being scared of other dogs. We are working with the awesome Sacha at DOGlife NZ and he is coming on leaps and bounds with my Ruby being the dog we are using to try and build his trust, Bear would suit being an only dog and absolutely loves people and kids (older kids) and would love a quiet lifestyle where he can run and play with his humans!

If Babe, Luther or Bear sound like they would fit well into your home then please get in touch!
