As mentioned in an earlier post I’m still going to share interesting stories and, for me, today’s 1st session definitely falls into the ā€˜different & interesting’ category so allow me to introduce you to Nitro….

If you’ve ever walked through the Customs/Bio Security section of Auckland International Airport or watched the NZ version of Border Patrol (season 3) chances are you’ve seen 6 year old Nitro in action. For years this handsome boy has been working to help protect NZ from biological risks but he’s now starting a new chapter in his life… early retirement. Nitro has recently said goodbye to his formal detection job and has found a loving family who are willing & very eager to make retirement the best years of his life 🄰 The only problem is years of training to detect food has resulted in a major obsession. For Nitro’s family being in the kitchen, preparing meals or just getting a snack is no longer an easy task. The kitchen has become more like a battleground with the family always on the defensive. Nitro always wants to know what’s on the kitchen counters or tables so paws are constantly where they shouldn’t and if the family is not paying attention…. goodbye foodšŸ˜‹ So training began today by implementing a kitchen boundary, teaching Nitro where his paws are not welcome to touch and, for good measure, we also worked on his little sock-stealing fe**sh 🤭 As I expected Nitro did a great job and, while I’m sure he will still get these rules wrong from time to time (especially at the beginning while he’s still instinctively doing what he was originally trained to do) I’m confident that he will adapt nicely to his new way of life. He’s already enjoying extra freedom, extra cuddles, and a new-found puppiness which is such a delight to see šŸ˜ Absolute pleasure to meet you all today and I’m thrilled you have chosen me to be part of Nitro’s new, exciting & happy retirement. See you all again soon 😊🐾

The last couple of months I've been doing a bit of an experiment.

Over the last 8 years I have written & shared stories about dogs that have started their training journey with K9 Techniques (when given permission from owners to do so). Majority of time these stories came fairly easily but as time progresses I’m finding it harder to keep the stories fresh, unique & interesting. That’s not because the dogs themselves aren’t interesting - I have always found immense joy in meeting, helping & seeing every dogs individual quirks & personalities and will forever continue to do so 🄰 My concern is that there are so many similarities in why owners are seeking help & the behavioural issues of their beloved pooch that I now feel I’m just repeating the same message within the stories.

ā€œLikesā€ of a post are typically higher when there is a unique & interesting story and so my experiment has been what would happen if I stopped introducing every new dog? What if I only posted a new story if I can share an interesting, unusual or important message? Would it make a noticeable difference? šŸ¤”

Like many of you (I’m sure) I have also been unhappy with the changes Facebook have made over time where it seems everyone is bombarded with ads more than feeds they’re actually interested in seeing. Facebook isn’t the forum it used to be. Unless you regularly like someone’s posts chances are you don’t get to see every post anyway.

So the result of this little experiment is posting less hasn’t had an impact on my business (thankfully) but it’s had a massive impact on how much pressure I’ve taken off myself to try & be creative on a regular basis. Conclusion is I will continue to post less but that’s not to say I’m vanishing completely. I’m still working with incredible dogs & their families and I will still share stories and post messages & photos from time to time – so this is not farewell, this is just a much needed release of self-inflicted pressure🤯... for now

May 5th-11th is NZ Sign Language Week so it seems very appropriate that 6 month old Ollie started his training today. This darling boy is deaf and all of his training will be done with sign language. His owners have already done some great work with teaching him a Sit command but his Wait has been a work in progress. Currently he can wait nicely in front of his food bowl šŸ˜‹ just not so much any other time. As well as teaching Ollie some commands we need to do quite a bit of work on his overall behaviour and manners. Ollie is a big strong boy and when he gets himself worked up (more out of excitability than anything other reason) his jumping & constant nipping is a major issue. He’s also putting paws on the kitchen benches, climbing on chairs & tables, stealing food (if able), scratching at doors, biting & pulling on the lead, and he has the loudest, shrill bark when he sees another dog while out for a walk. Of course Ollie doesn’t know how loud he is… unfortunately everyone else is fully aware 😱 Today when we took him for a quick walk I saw neighbours come out to see if a dog was being murdered… no it was just Ollie getting himself worked up because he could see a dog across the road🤭 A very interesting 1st session & I really enjoyed using sign language as the primary communication again. Overall all the signs are pointing towards a brighter future for this special boyšŸ«¶šŸ‘šŸ™Œ

I couldn’t decide which photo of 15 week old Max I liked more…. the curious & adorable ā€œwhat was that noiseā€ head tilt or the happy & alert ā€œlook how good I amā€ pose. A head tilt is always a personal fave but I also loved his happy smile & how cute his ears looked šŸ˜ Speaking of ears - when Max is concentrating his ears do a cross-over thing which is honestly too cute for words. Better seen from the back and I’m kicking myself I didn’t take a photo… but every time I saw his ears cross I just melted & couldn’t think of anything else (not ideal when you’re trying to teach & need brain in gearšŸ˜†) Thankfully Max was able to keep his brain in gear throughout his 1st training session and he did so well. Max is your typical pup in a lot of ways – jumps, nips/bites, steals shoes & socks, gets up on furniture & chews it or the cushions, easily distracted, friendly but excitable – but he’s also got some not-so-typical puppy ways. He’s not interested in treats, he enjoys the rain, he’s got a fixation with feet (especially when in motion) and his funniest quirk is he likes to lie down to have a long drink. That in itself isn’t a problem but his beautiful big paws will often tip the bowl over (solution coming in form of a sturdier water bowl). So Max’s owners opted for personal training to ensure their specific wants/needs are focussed on - with their top priorities today involving anything to do with his mouth/teeth & paws (ie no jumping, nipping, biting, chewing wanted) Max is a very quick learner and it didn’t take long before his owners were commenting on the positive changes they were already seeingšŸ˜‡ It’s early days but I think Max is such an appropriate name for him… he’s already got max looks, max personality, max adorability and (hopefully) soon max manners & obedience 🄰 And that's it for now.... I'm maxed out🤭

After introducing you to Koda (the boy) yesterday, today I get to introduce Koda (the girl) 🄰 This beautiful Koda is 6 years old and she has the sweetest smile - but behind that smile is also a tough girl who wants to protect her family at all cost. Mum is the main person Koda shadows and will react to anyone who gets too close (even Dad!!) Her reactiveness has become so bad that the family find it difficult to have people over or to take Koda for a walk. Confidence has been significantly lost but now her family are ready to re-build their relationship for the sake of everyone’s happiness & peace of mind (including Koda’s). Koda was put on lead before I stepped outside to be in the same area as she was and as soon as she saw me she instantly moved in closer to Mum, sat on her feet & gave me the warning eyesšŸ‘€ But that didn’t last for long. Mum took Koda through some initial paces and she settled enough for me to also take her for a little walk (unfortunately the wet weather today hampered any chance of going for a decent walk… hopefully next week šŸ¾šŸ‘£ ) We didn’t tackle too much with training today - I’d much rather go at a slower pace until everyone feels more comfortable & confident – but I was pretty pleased with what I saw today. Thanks for your time today Team Koda. Shame about the weather but at least it gave an opportunity to go at a more manageable pace for your 1st training session. Have a great week ahead and Koda…. keep smiling because your smile makes everything brighter šŸŒž

7 month old Koda is a Labrador X Akita and I love everything about him 🫶 I love his thick lush fur (thanks to the Akita genes), I love his sweet, excitable, friendly nature, and I really love his wonky ears when he’s feeling a little apprehensive but concentrating & trying his best to please šŸ¤— Koda & his family started their training because puppy school didn’t help as hoped. He only listens & obeys if treats are involved & there’s nothing to distract him. He’s super friendly & can’t control his desire to jump or nip to say hello/get attention (my toes were victim to a couple of nippy attention seeking moments). He also likes to steal socks or shoes for attention (usually making sure someone notices him). So puppy school may not have been able to help stop these behaviours and improve his overall obedience & manners but I can. And Koda proved today how well he can adapt: sitting without a treat bribe & holding the command even with distractionsāœ”ļø stopping nipping at toesāœ”ļø stopping biting the leadāœ”ļø listening to his verbal cuesāœ”ļø making everyone proud of him & his efforts todayāœ”ļø We’ve got lots of great stuff to put in place over the next few weeks, including some boundaries around home for safety purposes, and I can’t wait to see him in action again. Overall, the perfect end to a busy day ā˜ŗļø

Isn’t 5 year old Toby handsome? 🄰 Toby & his family have recently moved to Auckland and unfortunately Toby has been struggling with the change. I’m told he has always been a bit ā€œneedyā€ but since the move he’s become even more of a velcro dog (especially with Mum) and is constantly on alert & barking at everything. When left alone it takes him a long time (if at all) to settle down & his family don’t like seeing him so stressed and unhappy šŸ˜” Toby has never had rules or boundaries and he’s always been allowed to make all his own decisions – what to do, where to go, when to take a command seriously etc – so that’s the starting point. Toby’s 1st training session today included learning how to hold a Sit until released (no matter what was going on around him or whether Mum walked out of the room), waiting for an invitation to join his family on the couch (making it a place of privilege), and the introduction of a kitchen boundary (where he can see but not have access to location or anyone in it, unless invited) And how did Toby cope with all this change today? Like a superstar & a true gentleman 🌟 Toby… I know it wasn’t easy for you but I was so impressed with your overall attitude & behaviour. Your potential is as big as your heart and it’s a wonder it can all fit in such a small frame. Pleasure to meet you all today and I look forward to seeing you again soon😊

Picture received from Beni's owners showing them enjoying a cafe stop during a recent walk 😁 This wasn't a possibility a couple of months ago due to Beni's excitability & impolite manners (nearly no chance of him behaving or staying still long enough for anyone to order a coffee - never mind sitting down & actually being able to drink one!ā˜•)

Thanks for sharing your "Proud Parent" moment with me Team Beni & keep up the great workšŸ‘
