BEWARE KARAKA BERRIES ARE OUT!!

Although Karaka berries are an important food source for birds, such as the kererลซ they are highly toxic to dogs and other species of domestic pet and livestock.

The karaka tree produces oval-shaped berries that are green when unripe and turn orange/yellow when ripe. Almost looking like a loquat berry.

The kernels of their berries contain a neurotoxin and the powerful alkaloid poison karakin.
Initial signs of karaka berry poisoning are nausea, diarrhoea and restlessness.
These quickly progress to more severe gastrointestinal and neurological issues, including pacing, limb rigidity, crying, seizures and then unconsciousness.

If you have a Karaka tree please remove the seed pods before they ripen if you can or remove access to any dropped ripe berries. Many farmers fence off Karaka trees so dogs and stock cannot access the berries. Even better consider removing the tree as they can produce fruit from January to April.

If you suspect Karaka berries have been eaten by your pet it is best to seek immediate veterinary care. If your pet is unwell and Karaka berries are around your home or walking areas then please let your veterinarian know.

Check out the profiles of the team members heading ro Niue THIS weekend!

Make sure to follow The Rock Vets Niue and see what they are up to during their time in Niue as we run our 13th clinic!

We kick off today with a very familiar face, Sasha!

She is the owner director of Pakuranga and Whitford Vet Clinics in Auckland and a founder of The Rock Vets Trust alongside Linda McCallum and the late Kat Harris.

She has now been to Niue 18 times! Her first visit to Niue as a volunteer was in 2014 and she has been part of every clinic since (a total of 12!) plus plenty of holiday visits with her family.

She is very passionate about Niue and preserving the beauty, reducing feral dog & cat population as well as protecting wildlife and tourism.

"I love educating the locals on health and welfare of their pets as itโ€™s such an important part of our work."

Something Sasha really loves about her trips to Niue is seeing the positive impact our work has had. It is certainly a very rewarding sight!

She also loves seeing all the familiar faces at the clinic and when out for meals on the island.

It's always so lovely when people come and say hello to the team. The volunteers really enjoy the conversations and are always blown away by the kindness and generosity of the locals.

Sasha is looking forward to spending time with locals, going to her favourite cafes and snorkelling!

This week there will be a lot of fireworks about, here are a few tips for keeping your furry friends and family members safe and calm.

๐Ÿ’ฅWalk your dog before dusk to ensure you are home before skies start to erupt with bangs and bright light.

๐Ÿ’ฅKeep your pets indoors after dark - including cats and small furries inside where possible and provide litter trays for your cat.

๐Ÿ’ฅCreate a place they feel safe inside. For your dog you could make a 'den'. This can be a crate with a cover over it or a table draped with a blanket.

๐Ÿ’ฅMake sure cats have access to their normal spots and encourage them to settle with treats or toys. A box with a blanket inside is a great place to hide! You could even try some catnip!

๐Ÿ’ฅ Keep your dog distracted with a new toy or treat, a nice long lasting chew is a good idea. 'Kongs' are also great when filled with something tasty. This can be a great distraction from the noise.

๐Ÿ’ฅDonโ€™t confine your pet to just one room, allow them access to all safe areas of the house.

๐Ÿ’ฅSome pets may also be happier curled up with you so let them do whatever makes them feel most comfortable.

๐Ÿ’ฅTo reduce the sudden impact of the sound of fireworks, keep the TV or radio on.

๐Ÿ’ฅKeep doors and windows closed. It can also help to keep your curtains closed. As well as the noise of fireworks, the flashes of light can be scary.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Providing small furries with extra bedding so they can 'bury' themselves deep inside, drowning out any external noises and flashes of light is also a good precaution.

๐Ÿ’ฅ For our larger friends make sure all fences are secure and check paddocks and stables thoroughly for anything that could cause injury, such as protruding nails.

๐Ÿ’ฅMake sure your pets microchips are registered and all your details are up to date so that if your pet does manage to escape you have a better chance of being reunited sooner.

๐Ÿ’ฅCarry on with your normal routine and try not to fuss over your pets. Acting normally helps to show them that there is nothing to be worried about and may help ease their anxiety

This is Alfie, a 5 month old Border Collie Cross. He was out for a walk with his Mum today and popped in to say hi! It's always lovely to have visitors, especially when they are this cute!!

He checked his weight and had a few treats and pats. It's a great way for our canine friends to feel comfortable in the clinic environment and hopefully make future Vet visits a bit easier!

23/10/2024

๐Ÿ’ฅ Fireworks season can be a very scary and noisy time of year for our pets and it can start around Halloween and last long after November the 5th!

๐Ÿ’ฅ Now is a good time to start thinking about what you will need to do to keep your pet calm and feeling safe and secure in their own home.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Sometimes just keeping the curtains shut and turning on the TV or playing music is enough. Some animals prefer a 'den' to hide in whilst others will want to be close to you.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Sometimes however our pets need a bit more than that to ensure they remain happy and less stressed when the bright lights and loud bangs enter the skies above.

๐Ÿ’ฅ There are a few products available to help your pet deal with this time of the year.
* 'Feliway' and 'Adapti'l diffusers & sprays.
* 'Adaptil Calm' collars for dogs.
* 'Calmex' for dogs & cats.
* Purina Proplan 'Calming Care' powder.
* 'Thunder Shirts'.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Now is a good time to stock up as we may have to order some of the above products in for you. Many of these products are more effective it they are used leading up to the fireworks season.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Take the time now also to make sure your pet's microchip is registered and all your details are up to date so that if your pet does manage to escape you have a better chance of being reunited sooner.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Consider where you can position your rabbits and guinea pigs. If having them inside is a no-go, you will need to make sure you organize a thick blanket or make room in the shed or garage for them on noisy evenings.

๐Ÿ’ฅ If you need to stable or move animals, do this well in advance so that the animals have a chance to get used to their new surroundings.
