Space has opened up at Kiwi Vet Behaviour for their puppy classes (from their 1st vaccination -14 weeks of age).
🐾We recommend all puppies to do a puppy class, as it is great for their socialisation skills.
🐾These classes build trust and communication between puppies and their new family.
🐾Start training basic cues like sit, lie down, settling on a mat and coming when called.
🐾Learn how to master the essentials of toilet training, sleeping and redirecting unwanted behaviours.
🐾Discover how puppies learn, what socialisation means, and how we can set our new puppies up for success in adulthood.
They also run classes for TWEENS [14 weeks to 7 months] and ADOLESCENTS [7 to 20 months].
Contact them directly if you are interested at [email protected] or 022 6929 751🐶
Struggling with your pet’s behaviour issues but lost in a sea of misinformation? Time to find a qu
This is lovely, little Loki who is a very good example of how a tiny grass seed can turn into a life-threatening menace. Grass seeds don’t just get stuck in your pet’s coat. Some of them are shaped like an arrowhead and they only go one way – usually deeper into the body tissue.
Loki’s owner brought him in as soon as they noticed Loki was not 100% right – he was sluggish and drank heaps of water. When we ran some diagnostic tests and prepared for an ultrasound of his abdomen, we had to shave fur off his tummy and noticed a small wound. After we found that his whole abdomen was swollen and infected, the small wound made us suspicious of a penetrating foreign body.
And we were right: a grass seed had ended up in Loki’s abdominal cavity!
After a long and successful surgery, we could find the tiny grass seed itself and remove all infected material from Loki’s tummy!
Loki had quite a week but is now recovering well at home.
It is wise to be careful with dogs running through long grass and to check their fur and paws for grass seeds after walks.
It seems to be a less common problem in cats (who with their rough tongue would get rid of some grass seeds themselves), but long-haired cats or cats with mats in their fur can still have the same issue.

Easter is just around the corner and it is an important reminder to have a safe and fun Easter by being aware of possible
pet dangers.
🍫Easter eggs and chocolate- Chocolate is toxic for both dogs and cats. If you suspect your pet may have eaten some chocolate, we recommend you take them to your vet immediately.
🍇Hot cross buns - they can contain sultanas, raisins and currants which cause kidney failure in both dogs and cats, or chocolate which is also toxic to our pets.
🍬Sweets - in particular sugar free sweets often contain a substance called Xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, lack of coordination and seizures.
🍗Roast dinner - try not to give your pet the fatty roast meat scraps as this can lead to issues such as pancreatitis.
🪺Decorations - possible chocking hazards or swallowing plastic grass (often used in hampers) could potentially cause intestinal blockages.
💐Easter lilies and all types of lilies -are extremely dangerous to cats. Even if cats drinks the water from a vase that contains lilies, this can be fatal.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you suspect or have seen your pet eat anything they should not have or if they are acting change or contact your local after hours as soon as possible.

Our Nurses: Nina Rabic
Nina completed her bachelor’s degree in biology in Slovenia in 2016 and soon after, in 2020, she qualified as a Diploma Vet Nurse in New Zealand.
At a very young age Nina loved caring for animals at home and she couldn’t ever stop since! She started off with maintaining a quite technical aquarium with different colorful fish, then went on to caring for small pets like her guinea pig (Bajsi), her rat (Gusti) and her rabbit (Uhec). Nina then complimented her menagerie with cat Lady and dog Mik.
Nina developed an awareness of animal welfare, further enhanced through her studies of Biology and through vet nursing, she discovered a way to act on this.
When not at work, Nina likes baking Slovenian desserts (very much to the delight of the rest of the team!), exploring different places and all the outdoor activities, New Zealand has to offer. Whenever possible, she goes travelling and so far, she has been to 26 different countries and made unique memories during her travels.
As the daughter of a dentist, Nina is very interested in dentistry and enjoys performing anything involved in dental procedures for your pets. Nina just recently finished her Certificate in feline nursing – a one year course – with distinction!
Foods to be careful with this Christmas season with our pets 🎄
🍫Chocolate is toxic to both cats and dogs.
🍽As Raisins and sultanas are toxic to both dogs and cats - so be careful with mince pies, Christmas pudding, and fruit cakes.
🧅🧄Onions and garlic are both toxic to pets as well. That means any stocks, sauces, or powders containing onions or garlic are to be avoided. Onions can be very harmful even in small amounts.
🥓Be careful with very fatty foods as can they can cause pancreatitis in dogs and cats. Stick to lean meats like chicken and avoid bones, as they can splinter.
🥛It can be tempting to feed your cats milk or cream but cats are actually lactose intolerant, so may get an upset tummy.
Make sure you pick up your pets food and medications before the Christmas rush! 🎄🌟
Please give us require 3 working days notice for food orders and medication refills.
Please call us on (09) 281 3481 or email us at [email protected] to place an order 🐾
Here are our opening hours over the Christmas and New Years Period 🎄
Our team had a lovely Xmas lunch at the Zoo on the weekend.
Thank you so much Buchanan for giving us a tour of the Zoo Vet Hospital.
That was sooo interesting!!! What a great opportunity!
Our nurses: Hannah Laustsen
Hannah was born and raised in New Zealand. From a young age Hannah always had a passion for animals, starting by growing up in an animal filled household ranging from, cats and dogs, small mammals all the way to horses, her big love. That’s where Hannah & Kathrin met the first time, many years ago at a pony club where Hannah’s mum is the head coach.
Hannah started studying for her diploma in Veterinary Nursing and while doing her practice semester she met the team at Ellerslie Veterinary Clinic for the first time. She stayed on, was learning new things and still continues to grow her knowledge.
We are very proud that Hannah achieved the “Certificate in Feline Nursing” (a 1-year course) with distinction (!) lately.
Hannah is particularly interested in imaging and enjoys performing state-of-the-art radiographs and assisting with ultrasonography.
When she’s not working in the clinic, she can be found out and about riding her horses, enjoying time with friends and family, cooking or simply spending time outside.

No wonder we are so rabbit savy! What could be cuter than one of our gorgeous patients Taz enjoying the sunshine?
Here is our lovely Clyde that we showed you last week. He is doing much better and healing from his wounds. He is also obviously a genius as you can see on this video he plays fetch!!!!
Spring is here!! 🐥🌺🍃 This short clip shows one of the many thrush fledglings that get brought in to us during this time of year. We have named him Brian and he gets feed every few hours. Once Brian is big and strong we will release him to a cat free zone. If you find a fledgling on your property please observe it for as long as you can. Thrushes hide under bushes and wait for their mothers to come back and feed them. Quite often fledglings are taken by well-meaning people when they are actually perfectly healthy. This can be very upsetting for the mother Bird as she will spend days looking for her little one. If you are sure that the baby has been abandoned please put it into a box and keep it very quiet until you can get to your nearest Vet Clinic. If it is after hours you can feed the them a little bit of cat food. Whiskers kitten chunks in gravy or jelly is great! Just a few small pieces in the baby's mouth (as seen in the video) is enough. Baby birds can die from shock/ cold very quickly so please try to put the bird somewhere warm. If you have a pet approved heat pad that's perfect. Because they need lots of TLC it is best to he in touch with your nearest Vet Clinic or Bird Rescue in Green Bay. http://birdrescue.org.nz
This is gorgeous Cruz who went missing for two days. When his mum found him on a nearby property, his hind legs were paralyzed! He wasn't in any pain, but he couldn't even sit or drag himself. After clinical assessment and diagnostic tests we suspected that Cruz had a fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE). In FCE, somehow the material from the nucleus pulposus (the jelly like middle of the intervertebral disks) enters the arterial blood vessel system and is carried to the spinal cord where it causes a blood vessel obstruction: an embolism. This area of the spinal cord actually dies. This process is not painful but complete recovery might not occur. Usually, the damage you see within the first 24 hours is what you have to deal with - no progression, but sadly sometimes no full recovery neither. We have never before seen a quick improvement like Cruz showed. A few days after he was brought into the clinic, he did what he did on the video! That almost made us cry! 🌟🌟GO CRUZ!! 🌟🌟
