Jasmine was back at the dog training club and she did fantastic!
More than anything I was very impressed when she turned around on spotting bunnies or an unfamiliar dog 😀 When we worked in a ring, she never disengaged from me 😍 She must’ve been really happy to be back in training 👍

Locke and Maple enjoyed a walk with a group of dogs 🐕
Last week I didn’t let Locke approach other dogs because he was a little too aroused for a whole walk. This week he was excited but wasn’t over-excited. So, I was able to let him mingle with other dogs. Well done Locke!! 🎉

Brie was back in her class. As I mentioned yesterday, she is easy to handle. But, she gets nervous around other dogs. So, this is a great opportunity to get used to being around them.
Yesterday she especially struggled with group stays.

On his first walk with me this year, Locke jumped into the water and actually swam!! 😀
Because he had never put his feet into deep water before, this was very surprising.

He was very excited throughout the walk, which we did with another trainer and a group of dogs. Although he was able to disengage from other dogs without barking or growling, he tended to run toward them when he was not actively working with me, so I had to call him back many times.

When he jumped into the water, he was actually running toward other dogs. However, he wasn’t hysterical like he often is when reacting to dogs—he looked genuinely happy.

On this walk, I didn’t let Locke go close to the other dogs. Even though he may have just wanted to play, I didn’t want to allow interactions until he had calmed down a little, which didn’t happen during this walk.

I’m not sure whether he was so excited because of the year-end break. Hopefully, he will be calmer next time so that we can approach other dogs a little more.

Investigation continues…

As I mentioned in a couple of recent posts, Jasmine has been showing some unusual behaviours. For example, she became very clingy when we could hear fireworks. She also didn’t want to walk past a house where I could smell smoke, and eventually she started refusing to go for walks from our front door.

At first, I thought she was worried about the noise of the fireworks. Then I began to wonder whether smoky smells were the real issue. When she started refusing to leave the house altogether, I became concerned about her health.

At home, she seems completely normal. Just to be safe, I checked her body carefully. Today, after she refused to go out the front door again, I took her out through the backyard gate instead. She was very happy on the walk. So… did she just want a solo walk without Brie?

I have so many questions 🙄

When we work through behaviour concerns, there are always many questions that require careful investigation. Dog training really is like solving puzzles 🧩
