Did you know that this week is World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week?

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria mutate and become resistant to the antibiotics used to treat the infection that the bacteria cause. The more antibiotics that are used, the higher the chance there is of resistance developing. In humans worldwide there are more than 700,000 deaths per year related to antibiotic resistant infections!

Vets and pet owners play an important role in trying to minimise antibiotic resistance by the prudent and sensible use of antibiotics in treating our pets. Not all medical conditions require antibiotics and we will always discuss what treatment options are best for your pet.

With Guy Fawkes tomorrow night fireworks went on sale over the weekend and I'm sure you have all started to hear them in the local area every night... and we will continue to do so over the next week or longer.

To help keep your pets safe remember to
- Keep pets inside, walk your dogs before it gets dark
- Provide a quiet place for them to hide if they want to
- Shut curtains and play music to they cant see them and its harder to hear them
- Use treats and toys to distract them
- There are some medications that can help with noise phobia/anxiety - please contact us if you think your pet needs some more help

This handsome boy is Ash. A couple of weeks ago Ash started vomiting on the weekend and his owners took him down to ARC in Albany's afterhours team. Diagnostics were performed and a foreign body was identified in his intestine (within the red circle on the xray below). Ash's owners transported him back to us on the Monday morning after been on fluids overnight and we performed surgery to remove what appeared to be a square rubbery plastic key tag.

Who knows what made Ash think it was a good idea to eat this! But he is a Labrador 😂 Ash made a full recovery and we are hopeful that he has learnt his lesson not to eat things he shouldn't be eating!

Hey guys,
We have a client who is looking for her missing cat Bijou.
She is a white DSH with markings on her face and tail and she is microchipped. Attached is a video of what she looks like.
She normally resides around the Arkles strand area, and has been missing since last night.
She is normally a very homey cat so is very unlikely for her to not have come home last night.
Please if anyone has seen her or has any information on her whereabouts; contact us on 094287017.

Just a reminder that we are closed this Monday 28th October for Labour Day. If you are needing to order any medication or food let us know asap so we can have it ready for you before the weekend 😊

So you have noticed your pet is itchy? What do you do now?!

For most cases of chronic itching a visit to see the vet is required. However for some simple cases doing things at home such as making sure your flea control is up to date, washing or rinsing your pet (maybe more dogs than cats!) to minimize allergens on the skin – in particular if you notice they are itchy after walks or avoiding walking in certain areas if you notice they are more itchy after visiting those areas may help.

At the vet clinic after discussing your pets history and completing a physical exam we can perform a number of inhouse tests to try and determine what the cause of the itch may be for example skin scraping looking for mites, skin cytology looking for yeast and bacteria and cell types, woods lamp exam looking for ringworm. Depending on what we find may also dictate the need for further investigation such as blood tests, more specialized allergy testing or conducting food trials. What exactly would be done is very much case dependent and our vets and nurses are more than happy to discuss this with you.

Have a close look at the photo - this is a hair follicle under the microscope with 2 demodex mites on it!

Now back to our Dermatology theme after celebrating our vet nurses...

Allergies are the other most common cause of itching in our pets and just like humans our pets unfortunately can be allergic to anything! While in humans we typically see respiratory or hayfever like signs with allergies, in our pets we are more likely to see red and itchy skin, hair loss or recurring skin or ear infections. And how do our pets let us know they are itchy? They scratch, lick, chew and also shake their head if their ears are affected. Allergies can be present year round or seasonal (eg worse in summer) depending on the cause. Common causes include
-Atopy – an allergic reaction to inhaled allergens (such as pollen), or allergens absorbed through the skin
-Insect bite (eg flea) hypersensitivity
-Food
We typically see atopy develop in young adults whereas food and insect bite hypersensitivity can develop at any age.

While there are a number of different causes of itching, one of the most common causes that we see are external parasites such as fleas. Therefore making sure flea treatment is used regularly is one of the first things we always recommend when an owner reports that their pet is itchy.

At this time of the year we do typically see an increase in flea numbers so it is extremely important to be keeping up to date with flea control. There are a number of different flea control products available for both cats and dogs lasting anywhere from 1-6 months depending on the product and also different modes of administration - topical and oral. Like all things, flea treatment isn’t one size fits all and our nurses are more than happy to chat to you to figure out which is the right product for your pet.

Ahh summer… it’s finally nearly here, the days are getting warmer and longer, the bbqs are coming out of storage and the cats and dogs have started scratching… Wait a minute that doesn’t sound right does it?!

Although a lot of animals do experience allergies all year round we do tend to see an increase in itchy animals at this time of the year and we all know how frustrating it can be having an itchy pet. Over the next few months we are going to be having a real focus on all things dermatology, in particular the common causes that make our pets itch.

Keep an eye out for our posts about causes of itching and treatments that can really help our pets and our sanity from all that scratching!

Lovely little Bella came to see us for her annual vaccination last week. As part of the vaccination we always perform a full physical examination and during Bella's exam Debra discovered that she had fractured one of her carnassials - the big molars at the back of the mouth. In dogs these are quite common teeth we see fractures in as they often occur due to chewing on hard objects such as bones, antlers and hard toys. A good reminder to be careful about what we let our dogs chew on!

This week Bella came back to have her tooth extracted under anesthetic and the photos here show the fractured tooth in her mouth before been removed and then having cuddles with nurse Emily as she recovered.

Bella's older brother Jack decided that he was missing out on some attention so also came in to have his teeth checked and ended up needing a couple of his teeth extracted as well. His post anesthetic recovery pose was not quite as photogenic as Bella's unfortunately... but it did make us laugh!
