Grow Space

Grow Space Our vision is for neighbourhoods to have collective wellness through access to healthy food, social connection and sustainable economic activity.

Grow Space works to improve local food resilience and social equity by contributing to hyper-local, circular, regenerative systems in The Fringe Neighbourhood, Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa. To achieve our vision and mission, we run two initiatives in the grounds of Eden Park. Each initiative is designed around our three Pillars of Change:

· EARN: Run hyper-local, circular, regenerative enterprises t

o improve local food resilience
· LEARN: Grow capability to improve social equity and support regenerative food systems
· SHIFT: Influence attitudes and build community to deliver systems change so that we have an impact

Morningside Urban Market Garden (MUMG)
MUMG builds the skills of women (with a focus on migrant and refugee background women) to supply produce to local businesses and residents. Located on part of the carpark at Eden Park, our teaching garden is home to our Ako Ako programme which trains women to grow food for sale. Our Earn programme is based at both the teaching garden, and MUMG On Walters site. It provides spray free, hyper-local food to local cafes, restaurants and retail outlets and has created paid work for four people. A key aim is to scale the garden, so it generates profits to invest back into both Ako Ako and Grow Space overall. Morningside Urban Compost Kitchen (MUCK)
MUCK is a neighbourhood scale compost hub to process waste as close to its source as possible and create a local living compost. Located alongside MUMG on Walters at Eden Park, MUCK offers a neighbourhood composting service to local businesses and residents, runs composting workshops and supplies the MUMG gardens with compost. Muck contributes to the MUMG Ako Ako programme and locals can also buy compost from MUCK. A key aim is to create a locally based, circular solution to processing our neighbourhood organic materials, and contribute to the development of regenerative neighbourhood food systems.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the Grow Space Trust has made the difficult decision, after several months of looking at alternative options, to close Morningside Urban Market Garden (MUMG) and Morningside Urban Compost Kitchen (MUCK). Over the years, we've had the privilege of working towards a more delicious, circular, and connected neighbourhood, and we're incredibly grateful for the support, and friendships we have developed.

While it's always tough to say goodbye to one chapter, we're thrilled to unveil new opportunities emerging from this change.

🌱 What's next?
We're not saying farewell to our mission; we're embracing it in a new way. Our journey is taking a different path towards supporting neighbourhood food systems, and we want you to join us on the adventure.

We are excited to announce that Grow Space will continue to partner with Eden Park to support local food in the hood. We’re committed to working together to reimagine the community garden, while collaborating with local composters to continue to divert food waste from the stadium to create local living compost.

Stay tuned for more updates and details on these projects as they emerge. If you are keen to reimagine with us, get in touch with [email protected]

Thank You!
We couldn't have come this far without the support, dedication, and enthusiasm of our partners, collaborators, neighbours, supporters, and funders. Our heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one of you who has been a part of our journey.

Happy World Environment Day! 🌎

Eden Park is proud of its sustainable initiatives including:

🌎 Compostable packaging being used throughout the stadium for functions and match days.
🌎 Onsite compost bins for kitchen prep and match-day food waste which is used on our community garden.
🌎 Being home to the Morningside Urban Market Garden which produces a mixture of microgreens and green leafy vegetables, along with edible flowers.
🌎 All waste is sorted off site and diverted into appropriate waste streams.
🌎 Prohibiting the use of PCUs.
🌎 LED lighting.
🌎 Being home to over 360,000 bees and producing 700 jars of honey each year.
🌎 Using our onsite water bore and bespoke treatment plant to collect rainwater and use it to water the field, maintenance, landscaping and cleaning which saves up to nearly 16 million litres of town supply each year.
🌎 Water stations located around the stadium which have resulted in a considerable reduction in the sale of plastic water bottles.

Composting cycles the carbon and other nutrients in food “waste” back into the soil, building soil carbon, structure, and fertility to support growing local food.

Our food waste is a valuable community resource, and composting is a tool to help us return these nutrients to the soil to create a truly sustainable circular system.

Combining localised composting with regenerative farming practices has multiple opportunities for positive outcomes beyond just reducing waste to landfill – including for food security, soil health, carbon sequestration, water quality, biodiversity, employment and upskilling, public health and wellbeing.

Happy International Compost Awareness Week!

Auckland Council investing millions in this so-called 'sustainable solution' amounts to little more than greenwashing, says Kate Walmsley.

An Urban Market Garden in Morningside

Located across several sites in the neighbourhood Morningside Urban Market Garden (MUMG) is focused on extending the urban market gardening and business skills of migrant and refugee background women as they learn to supply hyper-local produce to local cafes and businesses.

A teaching and producing garden MUMG has since November 2018 been prototyping infrastructure, systems and curriculum using regenerative growing practices. Raised beds in upcycled apple crates, a tunnel house, propagation, watering and composting systems are being established as migrant and refugee background women are supported to learn about the business of urban market gardening.

MUMG is running a two year programme of learning and mentoring. The intention is for the first cohort of women (currently engaged) to learn for a full calendar year. They will then mentor a second cohort before taking their skills into their own enterprises. The second cohort will mentor the third, and so on.

The women are encouraged to start their own enterprises before they leave the programme and produce from these gardens can be sold into the market MUMG has secured.
