Mila the gorgeous English Springer Spaniel was awarded Beachland's patient of the month. Mila was so brave when she came in for her x-ray and dental procedure which her pawrents booked in while we were running 20% off all dental procedures under anesthetic exclusive to our VIPCare clients.💙🐾

Meet Blake. Blake came in for a dental procedure with Dr Nikki a few weeks back at our Pukekohe clinic. 🐱🦷

Blake's owner gave him gabapentin a few hours before coming to see us, helping him stay relaxed during the car ride and at the hospital. He remained calm and cooperative, making procedures like blood collection and IV catheter placement effortless. 💙💙

Why do cats show interest in sweet foods even though they can't taste them? 🐱🐾

Cats can taste sourness, saltiness, bitterness and umami (a meaty/savoury taste). However, unlike many other mammals, they have no functional receptors to detect sweetness. 🍓🫐🥝

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they must eat a meat-based diet to survive. Their taste receptors are able to detect the amino acids produced by meat, which may help them to distinguish the nutritional quality of food. Detecting amino acids in food is a much more useful skill for an obligate carnivore than detecting sugars.

So, why do they sometimes show an interest in sweet-tasting foods? The chances are they are actually enjoying the taste of something else, like fat or salt.😻

It's important to note that we do not recommend feeding cats sweet foods, especially those containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is highly toxic to cats - even small amounts can be life-threatening.🐾

⚠️PET WARNING⚠️

Easter is just around the corner which means lots of yummy treats are on the market. Toby and Frankie recently came into our Pukekohe clinic after they had stolen some hot cross buns. 🐰🐰

Raisins have been linked to kidney failure in dogs, and chocolate contains substances like theobromine that are harmful to both dogs and cats. Even small quantities can lead to serious health issues. It was reported that as little as 5 raisins killed a Dachshund. 😔

👉 Keep hot cross buns, chocolate, and other Easter goodies out of reach from your pets. Be cautious when sharing food, as what's safe for us may not be safe for them.

Thankfully with Toby and Frankie's pawrents quick actions, we were able to induce vomiting and bring up the raisins. If you suspect your pet has ingested any treats they shouldn't have, please bring your pet to see our team immediately. 🐾

The lovely Huxley is a happy, goofy boy but struggles to contain his excitement, which makes him difficult to examine. The team at Papakura has started keeping him occupied with a Lickimat on the wall when he comes in. It is so much easier to assess him! Good boy Huxley.🐶💙🐾

Addressing concerns about muzzling your dog can be a sensitive topic. In this video, we provide insights on how to make the muzzling experience positive for both you and your furry friend. We aim to create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone involved 💙❤️🐶🐾

Please note, the nylon muzzles shown in this video, are only used in clinic for short periods of time because they are more secure and safe for our staff. We recommend the Baskerville basket muzzles for longer periods of time to allow for panting, drinking water and continuous positive reinforcement with treats. :)

Miss Emmy recently visited Vet Sujata for a scale and polish. X-rays showed she had a resorptive lesion which in short is dental disease that involves breakdown of the tooth structure. 🦷🦷

As you can see the tooth on the left-hand side has completely broken down. Emmy would have been relieved to have it extracted. Her owners have now put her on a Royal Canin Dental diet and she is doing well 💙🐱🐾
