With this lovely weather that we are having, now is a good time to be aware of foods our pets should not allowed to eat.

Stone fruit - can cause obstructions and the stones contain cyanide!

Grapes and raisins - even small amounts can result in kidney failure and can be fatal.

All nuts - can be toxic or cause obstructions.

Corn cobs - can cause obstructions.

Alcohol (can be hidden in desserts or in yeast in raw dough)- your pet can end up having seizures and respiratory failure.

Onion, garlic and other allium vegetables - even in small amounts can be poisonous to your pet. Also can be hidden in meals such as mince or pasta meals.

Fatty foods and meat trimmings - can cause pancreatic inflammation.

Raw meat and fish - can cause food poisoning.

Chocolate and caffeine products- can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and can be fatally toxic.

Thanks to our friends at Southern Cross Pet Insurance, we have some awesome handouts on the above topic. Pop into our clinic to pick up a info sheet if you would like further information.

Please be diligent about keeping these foods out of the reach of your pet and call your friendly Veterinary Hospital Group clinic if you think your pet has eaten any of the above xx

Did you know that Karaka berries can be toxic to pets? 🍇🐾 While these bright orange fruits might look tempting, they can cause serious health issues for dogs and cats if ingested, including vomiting, diarrhea, and even liver failure. If you have a pet that enjoys exploring outdoors, be mindful of where they roam. Keep an eye on them, especially during berry season, and make sure they steer clear of these harmful fruits. Stay safe, furry friends! ❤️

It's baby bird season!

Many rescues and vet clinics become over run with fledglings at this time of year, when it is often best for them to be left alone. Below is advice from Bird Care Aotearoa:

Many birds go through a totally normal (but awkward!) stage when they fledge. They leave the nest before they are able to fly properly and can be found hopping around on the ground. Parent birds will come by with food, but will likely not be around all the time.

If the fledgling appears to be healthy and uninjured, is not in immediate danger, and the parents are still around (you may need to observe the area consistently for up to an hour), please do not take these babies! The best place for them is with their family. Simply leave them where they are or carefully place them in a nearby bush.

If there is no sign of the parents, or if the fledgling appears to be sick or injured, then please bring them to Bird Care as soon as possible. Place a towel in a box and make some air holes for ventilation. Place the bird in the box and bring them to Bird Care during our opening hours.

Bird Care Aotearoa can be contacted on 027 816 9219 between the hours of 8am-4pm daily and are located at 74 Avonleigh Road, Green Bay, Auckland 0604. Please note they are currently closed during the holiday period.

Guy Fawkes season is almost upon us! Below are some helpful tips on how to keep your pets safe and reduce stress.

- Keep pets inside, with the curtains closed. Have some gentle music playing in the background.
- Create a safe space for them such as a crate with a blanket over the top, or for cats - a cardboard box lined with blankets.
- Have all their favourite toys, food and water ready to keep them occupied. Puzzles, kongs and licki mats can also be helpful distractions.
- Make sure microchips are registered on the NZCAR and that all of your contact details are up to date in case they run off.

We stock a range of products over the counter that can help reduce stress including Thunder Shirts, Feliway and Adaptal (in collars, deffusers and sprays), Calmex, and food options such as Royal Canin Calm.

For anti-anxiety prescription medications give us a call on 09 426 9535 to discuss.

Just a wee reminder, if you have in lamb ewes to check if they are due to be vaccinated or drenched before they give birth.
Ideally vaccinate and drench within four weeks of their due date so they can pass on passive immunity to their babies.
