Fun fact Saturday!
Did you know that all ginger cats are tabby but not all tabbies are ginger!
Around 25% are female.
Personality wise, they tend to be very chatty, affectionate and are perceived to be 'Velcro' cats who love to be with their owners.
There are many famous orange cats in movies etc such as Shrek's 'Puss n Boots' , Breakfast at Tiffany's 'Orangey' and of course Garfield !
There is no correlation between the stereotype of redheads and having bad tempers or attitudes.
Hamish, who belongs to one of our vet nurses, certainly fits the profile of a ginger kitty ๐
Buy any Simparica 3 pack and receive a free tasty Mutt Butter treat as well as $10 off!
Great as a distraction on a lick pad while you trim those nails, or to fill a kong toy ๐ถ๐
Did you know that we provide free dental checks and dental estimates? We are also running a dental promo for the months of June and July which offers generous savings!
Just like humans, your petโs teeth are always being bombarded by bacteria, leading to the buildup of plaque and tartar. This can start at a young age in some dogs and cats.
The first time that many pet owners know there is a problem with their petโs teeth is when they catch a whiff of very smelly breath or, more worryingly, when their pet stops eating. You may think that a bit of smelly breath (halitosis) is okay to put up with, however poor teeth and dental hygiene can result in other much more serious health problems.
You might not realise that your pet has dental problems, especially if you donโt get very close to their mouths. Most animals can be very secretive, even if their mouths are causing them pain. Many pets will not cry out, but simply tolerate it.
If you do see any of the following signs, it may indicate dental discomfort:
Reluctance to eat โ especially hard food such as biscuits
Their coats becoming unkempt or matted โ they may be reluctant to groom
Wetness around their face, chin and mouth โ or even drooling
Some animals even โpawโ at their faces/mouth areas
Like any disease, the earlier it is discovered the easier it is to treat, and early intervention can save you money!
Cuteness alert! Tillie's owner thought she had eaten 250g of dark hot chocolate powder (which is far more toxic than eating just chocolate). She demanded tummy rubs whilst waiting for an injection to work to make her vomit.
Friday's are always better with a cute goat ๐ฅฐ

Patient of the day ! This lovely goat was in today to have sedation and x-rays to check for cruciate (knee) injury. This is a quite common issue in animals (especially in dogs). He was a very well behaved boy who had lots of pats from the team.
Found: Male entire dog on Bawden Rd. Call us on 09 426 9535 for more information ๐

Cassidy was not stressed by her first vet visit at all ๐ถ๐
Lilly would like to tell all the cats in town that coming to the vet really isn't that scary. She definitely wins the award for most chilled cat of the week ๐ป
This sweet wee hen was in having surgery last weeek for a fractured toe amputation. After having a sedation (which includes some nice pain relief) she was then placed onto some oxygen and then one of our mixed animal vets performed the procedure.
Everything went to plan, and after having a few injections of pain relief and antibiotics, she was woken up from the sedation and made a full recovery from her anaesthetic. After a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs and a bandage change or two, we expect her to make a full recovery.
To all of our clients, there are road works on Dairy Flat Highway and Kahikatea Flat Road as well as outside the clinic.
Please allow extra travelling time if you are coming for consults or to pick up any medications and food as the roads are currently blocked up. Thank you :)
Fly strike ! We have been seeing quite a few cases recently and this is bound to increase as summer progresses. Signs to keep an eye out for include; blowflies hanging around, agitation (stomping of the feet, itchiness and scratching), seeking shade, general malaise, wool loss and dark oily patches on the fleece.
We also recommend that you make sure all of your stock are up to date with their drenching. As always, prevention is better than cure !
Please do regular checks of your stock for the above, and contact us on 094269535 or [email protected] if you think your stock may be affected.
Happy New Years everyone ! Hope the weather behaves wherever you are.
Just a reminder that we are closed from midday tomorrow (Saturday). We reopen back on Wednesday morning. Our vet is available over the long weekend for any large animal emergencies ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ท๐ด๐ฅ๐๐๐โ๐ฆบ
Merry Xmas everyone ! Just a wee reminder in the days leading up to Xmas day that you keep all chocolates and sweets out of the reach of your pets (especially those ones under the Christmas tree). Already today, we have had two lovely dogs in the clinic that have eaten large quantities of chocolate that could make them feel quite sick if not noticed by their attentive owners.
Chocolate toxicity is determined mainly by what type and amount of chocolate, the size of the animal and if it contains nuts, raisins or the wrappers. It is always best to take action by calling your vet sooner rather than later. Generally depending on how long ago the pet has ingested the chocolate, treatment is firstly making them vomit with a particular medication along with some potential other medications to help absorb the chocolate.
Some dogs love the taste of chocolate so it can make them quite sad if we have to induce vomiting
Just a reminder of our Xmas and New Year hours. We are closed the stat days (Xmas, Boxing Day and New Years and the day after New Years).
We are open our usual times on the other days, 8AM-6PM during the week and 8AM-12PM on Saturdays).
If your pet is on any medication, please contact us if you need to order some to get them through these dates.
Many thanks and have a great Xmas from the team at Dairy Flat Vets x
