DID YOU KNOW? Ear mites are tiny infectious organisms resembling microscopic ticks. While cats or dogs can become infected with ear mites, it is more common in cats. Ear mites cause intense itching and can lead to secondary infections with bacteria and yeast.

Did you know? The oldest cat in the world was 38 years old!

The oldest cat to have ever lived was 38 years and 3 days old when he passed away. Creme Puff, born on 3rd August 1967 lived until 6th August 2005, and his owner Jake Perry also owned the previous oldest cat record holder, Grandpa Rex Allen, who passed away at the grand age of 34! Whatever Jake Perry’s doing, he’s doing it right!

Vets on Waiheke Will be working closely with Auckland Council to bring you the Free Desexing Campaign throughout March & April.

Auckland Council is running a desexing campaign to help reduce and control the overpopulation of dogs across Tamaki Makaurau. There are a range of other benefits that desexing provides such as reducing a dogs desire to roam or exhibit aggressive behaviour, which will help support safer communities and reduce dog attacks.

Who’s eligible?
If you own a currently registered dog that has been classified either menacing or dangerous then we’d love to hear from you.
Desexing may also be available for dogs living in areas with a high volume of dog attacks (see below).
FAQ:
My dog is not registered and/or classified; can I still get free desexing?
Your dog MUST be registered to be eligible for this campaign. All dogs over 3 months of age are required to be registered as per the Dog Control Act 1996. To complete registration now please click here.

If your dog is registered but not classified, you may still be eligible. Dogs living in areas with a high volume of dog attacks have been identified as potential candidates for this campaign. If your dog resides in one of the following suburbs – Otara, Papakura, Manurewa, Mangere, Mangere East, Papatoetoe, Henderson, Massey, Mount Wellington, Otahuhu, Pukekohe you are welcome to submit an application using the QR code and one of our staff will get back to you. Please be advised that acceptance will be subject to availability.

How is this campaign funded?
Starting in the 23/24 registration year, $1 from every registration is now allocated to a dedicated desexing fund. This funding can only be utilised for this purpose and will not be made available for other Animal management campaigns.

What are the benefits to desexing my dog?

Health benefits
Desexing removes the risk of cancer and disease of the reproductive organs.
Desexing is good for your dog’s health and may increase their lifespan by three
to five years.

Behavioural benefits
Dogs are less likely to wander, therefore less likely to be hurt in road accidents,
get into fights with other dogs or come into contact with infectious diseases or
parasites.
Dogs are less likely to be aggressive and can be easier to train. Desexing does
not change the personality of your dog.
Male dogs are less likely to behave in an antisocial manner, e.g. mount people’s
legs and mark their territory.

Lower registration fee for desexed dogs
Desexing gives you a discounted fee for your dog’s annual registration with
Auckland Council.

Please give us a call at the clinic if you have any questions regarding the campaign or alternatively you can give Simon - Animal Management Officer a call on 0272164690.
