Sommerville Veterinary Centre

Sommerville Veterinary Centre Welcome to the Sommerville Veterinary Centre where we have been putting “pets first” since 1993. Why does this make our practice unique?

Well, there are two things we know for sure; pet owners love their pets and pets can’t talk (well not in English anyway!). So every member of our staff understands the importance of being the voice of your pet. Our care focussed approach is backed by the latest veterinary knowledge, diagnostics and medicine and we guarantee to tell you honestly and in straight forward language what your pet would

want you to know. Only then are you able to make the very best healthcare choices for your very best friend. If you are not yet one of our many “pets first” clients then come and experience what we do best at the Sommerville Vet Centre – better yet, let your pet experience it! Our vet hospital is purpose built with dedicated surgery, imaging, laboratory, hospital and dental facilities plus we have a great cattery, retail area and off street parking. Open 6 days and late nights all week - we are when your pet needs to be heard.

In January we had Daisy, a five year old guinea pig who is owned by one of our nurses. She underwent an emergency urethrotomy last week when a stone was discovered lodged in her urethra. Dr. Jesse performed the successful operation alongside nurse Kaycia and the stone was successfully removed. Daisy is recovering well and enjoying extra snuggles and treats!

Guinea pigs are prone to bladder stones and female guinea pigs can even develop stones in the urethra itself. Daisy will now be on a low calcium diet to help prevent stones from developing in the future. See the link below for calcium amounts in common guinea pig foods and make sure you aren't feeding too many calcium rich foods as part of your guinea pig’s fruit and veg diet portion.

We recommend that all our small mammal friends be seen yearly for health checks and please phone if your pet is experiencing any lack of eating, diarrhea, lethargy, no or little production of urine/feces or you have any other concerns. All rabbits, especially those with access to the outdoors, should also be vaccinated yearly.

As for Daisy, she is fully recovered and living her best life with her sister Pepper.

It's fledgling season and we have taken in some young birds who have been found by well-meaning members of the public.

While some of these birds are injured and in need of our help, the rest have been removed from their habitat where their parents are still taking care of them.

Please refer to this handout before removing a baby bird from their surroundings.
