Auckland Cavy Care

Auckland Cavy Care Guinea pig focused rescue based in Auckland, New Zealand. Chairty # CC55874 Auckland Cavy Care is a rescue not a pet shop or breeder.

Every guinea pig that comes here is technically homeless hence why we use the term 'adopt' not 'buy' as we do not breed nor do we sell guinea pigs for profit. We're a 'half-way-home' while the piggies are looking for their forever home. Their first three weeks with us are spent in quarantine, and if needed they get vet treatment. Once they're out of quarantine they get put up for adoption to a loving permanent home where they will be valued and nurtured as part of the family.

🐹💚 Adopt, Don’t Shop — Meet 3 of our lovely girls! 💚🐹

Three beautiful guinea pig girls have captured our hearts at Auckland Cavy Care — and they’re hoping to capture yours, too!

💖 Miss Greeblee — A special little lady with permanent leg misalignment. She gets around beautifully and doesn’t let it slow her down, but she’ll need a caring home that understands her unique needs. Greeblee is affectionate, resilient, and full of charm.

🌸 Gracie — This sweet girl has already found her forever home! We’re so happy for her and her new family. 💕

🐹 Marmite — A gorgeous, gentle girl still waiting for her perfect match. She’s curious, calm, and loves her veggies. Marmite would thrive in a loving home where she can enjoy plenty of space and companionship.

Every adoption helps open space for more rescues in need. All our guinea pigs are desexed, healthy, and ready to bring joy to their new families.

🌿 Huge thanks to The Bunny Bach! 🌿

The fantastic team at Bunny Bach has just donated more hay for the buns and guineas at Auckland Cavy Care — and with the recent Wellington 40 intake, our hay consumption has definitely skyrocketed!

Their hay is absolutely fantastic, offered at great prices, and they do an amazing job supporting rabbit and guinea pig rescues across New Zealand. We’re so grateful for their ongoing generosity and care for our little ones.

Supporting Bunny Bach helps them continue to support rescues like ours — it’s a wonderful way to give back while keeping pets happy and healthy.

If you haven’t already, please check them out and support the amazing work they do! 💚🐰🐹

Giving Tuesday Announcement

Today is Giving Tuesday, and we’re thrilled to share some wonderful news! Thanks to the incredible generosity of the SPCA Community Desex Grant, we’re now able to give back to our amazing guinea pig and rabbit community.

This grant will help support owners in desexing their guinea pigs and rabbits, allowing pets to enjoy the many health benefits that come with it — while also helping to reduce the number of unwanted litters born each year. We’re so grateful to SPCA for making this possible and for their ongoing commitment to animal welfare across Aotearoa.

This opportunity is for owned community animals, not those currently in Auckland Cavy Care’s rescue. To continue helping the guinea pigs and rabbits under our care, we still rely on community support — especially as we prepare the Wellington 40 for adoption next year.

More updates about the community desexing programme will be shared over the next few days, so keep an eye on our page for details.

Donations, shares, and encouragement make all the difference. Thank you — and a huge thank you again to SPCA — for helping care for and protect these little lives. 💚

Eighteen Guinea Pigs Desexed This Week! 🐹💙

Our amazing vets have been hard at work — 18 male guinea pigs were desexed this week! That’s around $2,500 in vet costs alone.

Next week, we’ll be doing a mix of males and females, continuing our mission to ensure every guinea pig in our care is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption.

Our For Adoption page has also been updated!
www.aucklandcavycare.org.nz/guinea-pigs-for-adoption
We now have several desexed female guinea pigs who have fully healed from their surgeries and are ready to find their forever homes. Each of these lovely girls has been cared for by our dedicated foster network and is now healthy, happy, and waiting to meet their perfect match.

We’re still looking for foster homes for guinea pigs — indoors and within the Auckland region. Fostering helps provide safe, loving spaces while they recover and wait for their forever homes.

A reminder that adoptions will pause from 10 December to 10 January, as we don’t believe animals should be seen as Christmas presents. Fostering remains open during this time, and foster families are welcome to adopt their fosters afterwards if it’s the right fit. All foster homes receive a full setup to get started.

The boys desexed this week will be ready for adoption after the 10th of January 2026, once we resume adoptions following our holiday pause. We always wait three weeks post-neuter before rehoming males, to ensure they can safely go to homes with either male or female guinea pigs.

Every surgery, every foster home, and every act of support helps Auckland Cavy Care continue this vital work. Donations are always appreciated to help cover ongoing vet costs and supplies.

Update on Our 40 New Arrivals

All 40 guinea pigs have now settled into rescue life here at home base!

Many arrived with wounds from fighting, and several had severe mite infestations—like Saturn, who came to us with painful injuries. After just one week of clean bedding, proper food, medication, and gentle care, we’re already seeing amazing progress.

We’ve begun desexing the males, but with this many, it’ll take a few weeks and cost around $5,000. This is the biggest single intake we’ve ever had, and we’re so grateful for everyone who’s helped us get this far.

As Giving Tuesday (December 2nd) approaches, there are lots of ways you can make a difference:

🌿 Donate good-quality hay and pellets
🥬 Drop off fresh greens (they go through a mountain every day!)

40 Guinea Pigs Incoming! 🐹❤️

This week we made a big trip down to Wellington to pick up two herds of mixed-gender guinea pigs — a total of 40 little ones coming into our care!

With two large mixed-gender herds we just couldn’t ignore, we had to step in and help. Sadly, all guinea pigs in both groups have mites, and all the females are at risk of being pregnant.

The first herd of 11 came from owners who were leaving New Zealand before we could arrive in Wellington. The amazing team at SPCA Wellington kindly looked after them for a couple of days until we could get there — a huge thank you to them! It’s always wonderful when rescues work together ❤️

After collecting that group, we headed over to Lower Hutt to pick up the second herd. We stopped in Taupō for the night and will be doing the last stretch home today!

Supporting these little critters through their rehabilitation and recovery will take a lot of time and funds. We can’t do what we do without you all. If everyone who reads this could donate $10, it would go a long way toward helping these little ones find their new forever homes.

A massive thank you to everyone who’s already offered to foster — with these new arrivals, we’ll definitely need more foster homes! I’ll be replying to emails on Friday, once we’re all settled back home.

🐹 Foster Homes Needed – Indoor Guinea Pigs 🏠

Auckland Cavy Care may soon have a large number of guinea pigs needing safe, indoor foster homes due to a surrender in progress. Foster homes are required for the Auckland area, as the rescue works closely with local vets for ongoing care and support.

Foster homes will likely be caring for guinea pigs currently in the rescue, so we have space for the new arrivals at base. For guinea pig foster homes, we can supply a C&C indoor cage, food, bedding, water bowls, and anything else that may be needed. Fosters will need to supply fresh vegetables for the guinea pigs. All other supplies and support are provided — just bring the space and compassion!

We’ll provide an update when the new guinea pigs come into the rescue, but we’d like to be prepared with foster homes on standby. We should know more in around a week’s time.

If you can help or want to be on standby, please fill out our foster form at www.aucklandcavycare.org.nz/fostering/ or message the page.

📍 Location: Auckland
🕒 Foster period: Flexible, but able to commit for a minimum of one month

• 5.5kg Timothy hay

Thank you again to everyone who donated through Pet.kiwi — your kindness means the world to us and our rescue animals! 🐾💛

We have two very special rescue friends who aren’t guinea pigs or rabbits — and they’re now ready to find their forever families!

💙 Anga
Anga is a one-year-old ragdoll-cross girl who came to us very underweight. After 8 weeks of care, she’s now a healthy 3kg and ready for adoption! Her old owners had trimmed her nails too short, so they’re still growing out. Anga is a friendly, adorable little cat with the biggest blue eyes. She’s okay with other cats (though can be a bit cheeky!) and must be an indoor-only cat.
She’s desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and up to date on flea and worm treatments.
If you’d like to adopt Anga, please fill out our cat adoption application form.

🐶 Archie
Archie is a 9-month-old Shih Tzu–Poodle cross who came from a property with nine other dogs. He’s now desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and registered.
When he first arrived, he was very shut down, but after 4 weeks he’s showing his true, happy personality! Archie is great with kids and okay with other dogs when introduced properly. He’s full of energy and loves life. He’s now toilet trained and doing well with crate training. Archie still needs some ongoing work on separation anxiety, jumping, and guarding behaviours. He will need regular grooming and a family who understands he’s a dog, not a toy.

We’ve promised Archie the best forever home and won’t rush his adoption.

If you’re interested in adopting Archie, please email us at [email protected] 💌

Let’s find these two sweet souls the loving homes they deserve! 💕

Our Story

Auckland Cavy Care is a rescue, we are not a pet shop or breeder. Each Guinea Pig that comes into the rescue is at that point homeless as due to no fault of their own they are needing a home, this can be due to many reasons. We are a “half-way-home” for the Guinea Pigs while they are looking for their forever home, and we could not run the the rescue with-out the support of our foster home network who offers up their time and space to lovingly foster the Guinea Pigs.

Each Guinea Pig is de-sexed and vet checked prior to adoption, this is because we firmly believe in de-sexing Guinea Pigs both for their health but also to stop any unwanted breeding. This does mean that our adoption fees are higher, however this does not cover the expenses that the rescue incurs and no profit is made from the adoption of each Guinea Pig, we run at a loss as we do this for the love of the Guinea Pigs and the hope to make a better future for each one that comes our way.
