BEWARE KARAKA BERRIES ARE OUT!!

Although Karaka berries are an important food source for birds such as the kererū they are highly toxic to dogs and other species of domestic pet and livestock.

The karaka tree produces oval-shaped berries that are green when unripe and turn orange/yellow when ripe. Almost looking like a loquat berry.

The kernels of their berries contain a neurotoxin and the powerful alkaloid poison karakin.
Initial signs of karaka berry poisoning are nausea, diarrhoea and restlessness. These quickly progress to more severe gastrointestinal and neurological issues, including pacing, limb rigidity, crying, seizures and then unconsciousness.

If you have a Karaka tree please remove the seed pods before they ripen if you can or remove access to any dropped ripe berries. Many farmers fence off Karaka trees so dogs and stock cannot access the berries. Even better consider removing the tree as they can produce fruit from January to April. Many native bush areas have Karaka in them to encourage native birds.

If you suspect Karaka berries have been eaten by your pet it is best to seek immediate veterinary care. If your pet is unwell and Karaka berries are around your home or walking areas then please let your veterinarian know.

🐱 Heartfelt Thanks to the Incredible Team at Pakuranga Vet Clinic! Wednesday last week was a busy day for LMA - We took seven cats from our foster homes out west to Pakuranga Vets. Out of these, five were desexed, chipped, and vaccinated in preparation for their adoption day.

We are also grateful for the compassionate care provided to 1 tiny kitten who needed assessment and treatment for an under-eye abscess, as well as the desexing of another cat that will be return to its colony/mop.

The Lonely Miaow Association Inc. are genuinely appreciative of the dedication and expertise of the Pakuranga Vets team. They consistently go above and beyond, especially with our more complex cases, and handle a significant number of our cats and kittens with exceptional care.

A special thank you to the wonderful nurses who even captured some fluffy cuddle time on camera! 📸

Thank you, Pakuranga Vets, for your unwavering support and care. Your commitment makes all the difference in the lives of these precious felines.
