Kitten season is in full swing!!

We are proud supporters of the cat charity Lonely Miaow Association and have been hard at work with them for ten years now. They are one of the biggest cat rescues in Auckland for stray cats and kittens.

FLEAS!

It is easier to prevent a flea problem than to deal with a flea population explosion on your cats and dogs as well as in the house.

Even in winter heated houses in Auckland will allow fleas to survive and breed, so year round flea treatment may be needed.

As we are heading into this lovely weather (🀞) this is the perfect time to check if your pet is up to date!

There are many flea treatments on the market, here at the clinic we stock the following varieties-

Topical flea treatment – A few drops of liquid applied to back of neck. We recommend Advantage , which is highly effective, kills adult fleas on your pet and flea larvae in environment.

Topical flea and worm applications - Bravecto, Advocate, Revolution, and Nexgard Spectra for cats are multi treatments that are also applied to the back of the neck.

They not only kill fleas, but also have a worm treatment included, which can by-pass having to give your pet a worm tablet if done regularly. They also teat against ticks and Broadline is the only spot on that treats tapeworm.

Advocate also contains ear mite treatment and Bravecto also covers ticks.

Tablets - Bravecto, Nexgard and Simparica for dogs. These are tasty chews that are given monthly (except for Bravecto which is every 3 months)

All 3 also treat ticks, Nexgard covers some worms and Simparica also treats against ear mites.

We also stock Seresto flea and tick collars for cats and dogs.

As well as treating your pets we recommend also regularly treating the house.

Pop down and see us and we can have a chat about which treatment suits your pet best. Remember, it's better to prevent than to treat!

🌟 Sunday Star! 🌟

This is the gorgeous face of Freya, an 8 month old British Bull Dog.

She was the perfect model for our little photo shoot and loved posing as much as she loved all the fuss and cuddles that came with it!

She even threw in a smile for one shot! Such a superstar!!

Friday Faces!

This week we have 2 gorgeous faces, belonging to 4 year old Ella and 2 year old Ted. These Golden Retrievers were doing their very best to look cute for a treat from their owners.

We think they did a fabulous job! What do your pets do to get your attention or to earn a yummy treat?!

Check out the profiles of the team members heading to Niue THIS weekend!

Make sure to follow The Rock Vets Niue and see what they are up to during their time in Niue as we run our 13th clinic!

We kick off today with a very familiar face, Sasha!

She is the owner director of Pakuranga and Whitford Vet Clinics in Auckland and a founder of The Rock Vets Trust alongside Linda McCallum and the late Kat Harris.

She has now been to Niue 18 times! Her first visit to Niue as a volunteer was in 2014 and she has been part of every clinic since (a total of 12!) plus plenty of holiday visits with her family.

She is very passionate about Niue and preserving the beauty, reducing feral dog & cat population as well as protecting wildlife and tourism.

"I love educating the locals on health and welfare of their pets as it’s such an important part of our work."

Something Sasha really loves about her trips to Niue is seeing the positive impact our work has had. It is certainly a very rewarding sight!

She also loves seeing all the familiar faces at the clinic and when out for meals on the island.

It's always so lovely when people come and say hello to the team. The volunteers really enjoy the conversations and are always blown away by the kindness and generosity of the locals.

Sasha is looking forward to spending time with locals, going to her favourite cafes and snorkelling!

This week there will be a lot of fireworks about, here are a few tips for keeping your furry friends and family members safe and calm.

πŸ’₯Walk your dog before dusk to ensure you are home before skies start to erupt with bangs and bright light.

πŸ’₯Keep your pets indoors after dark - including cats and small furries inside where possible and provide litter trays for your cat.

πŸ’₯Create a place they feel safe inside. For your dog you could make a 'den'. This can be a crate with a cover over it or a table draped with a blanket.

πŸ’₯Make sure cats have access to their normal spots and encourage them to settle with treats or toys. A box with a blanket inside is a great place to hide! You could even try some catnip!

πŸ’₯ Keep your dog distracted with a new toy or treat, a nice long lasting chew is a good idea. 'Kongs' are also great when filled with something tasty. This can be a great distraction from the noise.

πŸ’₯Don’t confine your pet to just one room, allow them access to all safe areas of the house.

πŸ’₯Some pets may also be happier curled up with you so let them do whatever makes them feel most comfortable.

πŸ’₯To reduce the sudden impact of the sound of fireworks, keep the TV or radio on.

πŸ’₯Keep doors and windows closed. It can also help to keep your curtains closed. As well as the noise of fireworks, the flashes of light can be scary.

πŸ’₯Make sure your pets microchips are registered and all your details are up to date so that if your pet does manage to escape you have a better chance of being reunited sooner.

πŸ’₯Carry on with your normal routine and try not to fuss over your pets. Acting normally helps to show them that there is nothing to be worried about and may help ease their anxiety

πŸŽƒ Halloween hits us tomorrow and it will he an evening full of fun and frights. Our furry friends definitely want to avoid the fright part though!

πŸŽƒ Trick-or-treating can be scary and stressful for your pets. Lots of visitors arriving at the door can be too much to handle, so keep your cats and dogs in a separate room away from the front room.

πŸŽƒ Costumes can be extra scary, remember that your animals don’t understand the concept of costumes, and seeing you or strangers wearing strange clothing or masks covering your face might make them anxious.

πŸŽƒ Halloween treats can be toxic for cats and dogs so move them now and keep all chocolate, lollies and raisins stashed away in a place where your pets can’t reach them.

πŸŽƒ If you involve your pets in Halloween costume fun just remember that it should not constrict their movement or hearing or make it difficult for them to breathe, bark or meow.

πŸŽƒ Some pets may find wearing anything very stressful so Maybe opt for a themed collar or a Spooky bandana? There are also lots of photo editing apps to add a spooky look to your pet without having to involve them at all (and this option is sometimes even more fun!)

πŸŽƒ If you havent already take a moment tonight or tomorrow to make sure your pet's microchip details are up to date just incase they get spooked and escape or get lost. This will give you a better chance of being reunited sooner.
