Have you got a dog kennel that you no longer need? 🐶🐾

It’s not just the dogs in our care at the Centre that we look out for, but dogs out in the community too. We sometimes come across pet owners struggling, and we want to help ensure their dogs have shelter and shade when needed. This is where your donated kennels come in ❤️

We’re looking for those on the medium to large size! If you have a kennel that’s in good condition, these can be dropped directly to our Māngere Centre between 10am-4pm, or if you have one that you needs collection please email [email protected]

Thank you on behalf of all animals! 🙏

We are delighted to announce the recent marriage of Crouton and Yorumi! 💒😂

Having crossed paths at SPCA's Māngere Centre, these two lovebuns were adopted together, hopping into their new lives as a pair 🥰 Their family have reached out to share that they have now been successfully bonded, and are embarking on this exciting new phase of their lives together after a joyful ceremony at their home! ❤️

Are you a dog or puppy owner? If so, we’re urgently calling on you to vaccinate them against parvovirus – it could be the difference between life and death.

Our Māngere Centre is facing its third parvovirus (parvo) outbreak in as many years. This devastating illness can remain on surfaces for up to a year, so dogs are at constant risk if they’re unvaccinated, or if their vaccinations lapse. Please ensure your dogs are protected and book your vaccines and boosters as soon as possible.

Read more about the current outbreak and the dangers of parvo on our website: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/parvo-outbreak-2025

Want to come and meet all of the cute cats at SPCA? Come along to one of our walk-in Caturdays! 🐱🙌

While adopters usually require appointments to meet the animals, for the next eight weeks you can simply drop into our Centres on Saturdays to meet the cats and kittens in our care.

Kitten season is in full swing, with over 1,400 felines needing to find homes over the next eight weeks ❤️ When you choose to adopt from SPCA, you can rest assured knowing they've been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, and health-checked, to ensure they have the best start to their new lives.

To speed up the adoption process for you on the walk-in Caturdays, we recommend registering your interest at www.spca.nz/caturday-adoptions - click the 'register to adopt' button on one of their profiles! (Please note appointments are still required for other animal adoptions).

We hope to see you on one of our walk-in Caturdays at your nearest SPCA Centre - every Saturday from 25 January to 15 March! 🙏

We'd like to say a huge thank you to Daniel and David, who have been very busy over the school holidays! ❤️ They've made lots of dog and cat toys, towers and condos for mice, a couple of fleece forests, and even spent time cutting up rags for us. We really appreciate all of their hard work!

Be sure to check out our SPCA Kids page for ideas and instructions on how to make enrichment toys: https://kids.spcaeducation.org.nz/get-involved/things-to-make-or-do/

Thank you, on behalf of the animals! 🙌

A cat and her litter of kittens were found abandoned inside a sealed plastic bin at an Auckland bus stop. They were were rushed into our care just in time.

Sadly, stories like these are all too familiar 💔 With cat season in full swing, this serves as a stark reminder of the importance of desexing your pets.

Read more at the link below.

The felines were found by a member of the public and wouldn’t have survived much longer in the heat.

Looking for a fun activity for the school holidays? Design a bandana, and win a dog soft toy! 🐶 🙌

Get your kids to unleash their creativity and design a fun dog bandana. It's good to remind them that while dressing up animals can look cute, it's important to consider their comfort and think about why they may not enjoy it - and bandanas can be a good alternative to funny outfits!

How to enter:
1. Head to the latest issue of Kind Matters, and create a unique bandana design using the template.
2. Take a photo or scan of your finished design, and upload it online along with your details.

The template and entry portal can both be found here: https://kids.spcaeducation.org.nz/newsletter/

The holiday season is a great time to bond with any furry family members you welcome into your home. And rabbits are no exception!

Long summer days mean lots of time to get started building your bunny mansion, and you’ll have lots of time to hang with your bunnies on a freshly cut lawn while they run around in a shady, safe area. Prefer your bunnies chillin’ out with you indoors, rain or shine? No worries there – indoor housing is an easy possibility too!

There are heaps (or should we say hops?) of adorable buns around the country looking for homes – and some Centres, like our Māngere Centre in Auckland, are positively overflowing with rabbits looking for love. Head to www.spca.nz/adopt today to meet them!

⚠️ DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS. If you love them, don't leave them. ⚠️ It's a message we share time and time again, and this year, we're calling on you to help us spread that message further.

Did you know that calls to SPCA about dogs left inside hot cars made up a whopping 11% of all welfare calls last summer? This is a completely preventable issue, and one which is causing hundreds of dogs (often loved pets) to suffer.

Here are some quick facts to share with the dog owners in your life:
👉 The temperature inside a car can heat to over 50°C in less than 15 minutes.
👉 Parking in the shade and cracking windows does little to help on a warm day. Dogs rely on panting to keep cool, which they can't do in a hot car.
👉 This puts dogs at a high risk of heatstroke - a serious condition for dogs, with a mortality rate between 39%-50%.
👉 It is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act to leave a dog in a hot vehicle if they are showing signs of heat stress. You can be fined, and prosecuted.

SPCA has created downloadable resources to help you spread the message even further. Posters, a flyer, and a social media tile can be downloaded from our website here: www.spca.nz/dogsdieinhotcars

We encourage you to use these - and ask your local businesses to display the posters if they can. Flyers can be kept in your car and handed out as needed.

This is a community problem, and one we cannot solve alone. Help us to prevent more tragedies this summer by sharing this post.

On behalf of the animals - thank you ❤️

This Sunday, 8 December is the last day to have your say on Auckland Council’s Let’s Protect Our Environment consultation. Let Auckland Council know that you support requirements for cats to be desexed and microchipped with a microchip registered on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register: https://akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/protect-our-environment

Desexing and microchipping helps protect your cat's welfare, and address the problems of too many unplanned litters of kittens needing help each year or ending up as strays.

Need help with what to say in your submission? Visit our website to learn more about advocating for more responsible cat ownership: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/speak-up-for-responsible-companion-cat-ownership

We’re aware of fraudulent phone calls being made around New Zealand, from one or multiple people pretending to be SPCA staff and/or veterinarians. The caller appears to be targeting pet owners who have lost their animals, stating that the animals are being held by them, and that payment in the hundreds of dollars (to be paid over the phone) is required to retrieve them.

These callers are not affiliated with SPCA. If your animal is found by SPCA, we will never request payment in this way. If you receive a call like this, we urge you not to provide any payment over the phone and report the call to Netsafe. You can find information about how to do so here: https://netsafe.org.nz/our-work/helpline-services/scams-helpline

Please be sure to share this message with your friends and whānau that have pets.
