This mare was limping and clearly in pain, so we had to act fast to assess the situation.
After a thorough examination, it was clear that an X-ray was necessary to ensure there was no further damage to the bone. Since the horse was understandably nervous, we sedated her to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. The sedation allowed us to safely position her for the X-ray without causing any additional pain or damage.
Thankfully, the X-ray showed no fractures, but the nail was deep enough to cause some soft tissue damage. We carefully removed the nail, which was only 2mm away from bone, and immediately started a poultice treatment to encourage healing and reduce infection risk. The poultice helps draw out any debris and keeps the area clean.
It's always critical to respond quickly to foot injuries like this to prevent complications and ensure the horse gets back to full health.
Take care of those hooves, folks! If your horse is limping or showing signs of pain, always call your vet to get it checked out!
