Some of our vets (Anneke, Alisa, Steve, Wing and Emma) visited the big smoke of Christchurch this week to attend the NZ Veterinary Association Conference, we're sure they are learning lots and look forward to having them back on deck next week and hearing about it.

It is reported over a quarter of NZ farms have animals shedding leptospira bacteria. Now is the perfect time to have your herd vaccinated.

𝗟𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀:
🐄 Adults: Abortions, mastitis and decreased milk production.
🐃 Calves: Fever, jaundice, depression, loss of appetite and death.

The team are out and about performing annual ram runs. These are invaluable as part of pre breeding soundness checks.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆?
Originally designed to identify and help eliminate Brucellosis ovis. Ram runs involve palpating the testicles and associated structures of your rams.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲?
Although Brucellosis risk is decreasing, we have still found infected flocks in the last few years. Aside from this, they are a great way of:
▪️ Finding abnormalities/issues that may affect ram fertility
▪️Vasectomising rams
▪️Discussing other issues with a vet
▪️Keeping dog vaccinations up to date.

This procedure involves removing part of the vas deferens (s***m cord). Once completed, the ram becomes a teaser.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲?
Teasers kick start ewes into cycling. This can provide a number of benefits, including:
🐏 A tighter lambing period.
🐏 Bringing the lambing period forward.
🐏 Stimulating maiden ewes to cycle.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲?
▪️ Young, fit and healthy
▪️ Good feet, teeth and joints
▪️ Easily identifiable.
