Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) ๐
Otherwise known as โmushy brainโ, it is the technical term for Vitamin B1 Deficiency. Calves suffering from PEM will commonly shows signs including a wobbly gait, blindness, disorientation, and seizures which can progress to death without treatment.
Most commonly affecting calves between the ages of 2-7 months, PEM occurs either when calves go from rough feed onto lush pasture, high carbohydrate diet, or overfeeding on brassica crops. This creates rumen conditions enabling bacteria to produce enzymes which break down vitamin B1 resulting in brain swelling.
Keys to success include slow pasture transition, provide roughage, limit brassica intake, and drench with B1 containing drench during the risk period.
This significantly increase chance of survival, if any of your calves are displaying these signs, contact your local clinic within the first 24 hours.
