About The Dog You Have
The pets we choose to share our lives with can sometimes be a dream come true and sometimes it doesn’t quite go according to plan...My name is Lisa and currently I have a Certificate in Companion Animal Care from Otago, a Diploma in Rescue Dog Rehabilitation and Cognition through Canine Principles, have run puppy preschool classes since April 2018, have experience in animal
welfare and veterinary environments, ran walking groups, completed a six month mentorship programme with Lewis Nicholls and Hannah Sadgrove, hands on experience with dogs in boarding, one on one, shelter and foster situations, hundreds of hours of research/theory plus ongoing studies with The School Of Canine Science and many more.
I’ve been there through the good, the bad and the ugly and will continue to learn, always.

The last course for the year starts tonight!
The registrations for 2025 are open and filling up so message or email to get on the list.
Here's a photo of a snapping turtle who comes out every evening, this landshark appears during witching hours every day. She stalks her prey from the safety of under the sofa, no moving things are safe...or stationary things either for that matter 😉

While all the animals get on pretty well, we still give them one on one time doing something they enjoy at their own pace.
Here's a snippet of Marley time x

Wilson Watson Purple Poodle, enjoys walking, power walking, peeing on things and quietly judging x

Gypsy does NOT like the wet or cold. She will try get in the shower while it's on but rain is not fun.
So we'll try a jacket in the mean time

Sharing another cute photo because she's been such a terrorist she should be charged with disrupting the peace and needed a reminder that this is all a phase.
New puppy owners - you are not alone!

Now Gypsy is officially ours, we can share some of the earlier photos ... Here she is helping on a zoom session in one of Izzy's old beds x

Little Gypsy is now really good travelling in the car. In a crate with a comfy bed, she is safe and everything in the vehicle stays safe from her too.
These pics from the past few days show just how relaxing she finds it!

How we introduced puppy to the existing crew to set up for success (Two adult humans present at each step.)
I picked her up, drove her home and left her in the car while the household dogs sniffed her bed, all while checking in that they could respond and paying well at each step keeping in mind, could they respond, could they take food, could they take it as gently as they normally would.
Then opened the windows so they could hear and smell each other.
Then brought her inside in her travel crate so they could see each other through a safe barrier.
Then had her outside to toilet so they could see each other through the glass doors.
Rotated so they could all smell where each other had toileted, and see each other but not get to each other.
Then on lead walk.
Then introduced off lead one at a time.
Then mixed together (ensuring no toys/food/items of potential value were laying around)
Feed times are totally separated and will continue to do this.
Time together supervised, time apart to unwind and one on one times doing what they enjoy - they didn't chose to live together, we made that decision.

A poem by a teething puppy entitled "What I Will Do"
I'm tired, imma bite ya.
I'm growing, imma bite ya.
My mouth hurts, imma bite ya.
I want a pat, imma bite ya.
I don't want a pat, imma bite ya.
Something moved, imma bite it.
That thing hasn't moved, I better bite it.
I'm excited, imma bite.
I'm scared, I might hide, or imma bite, undecided.
I'm hungry, imma bite ya.
I have a chew thing, finally something to bite!
Written by me, inspired by her x

Wilson was professionally groomed yesterday so today he got wet and dirty adventuring at the river.
It's suspicious if they're too clean anyways

Marley has just had his second session of Galen myotherapy with Jen at Healthy Hound Therapy -so lucky to have her here! It's been amazing to get some flexibility back, have his body moving more like what it should be and have him as comfortable as possible. Another session booked already :)

This probably comes as news to no one but we've fallen in love with the foster puppy and have applied to adopt her.
Once it's official (hopefully not too much longer to wait) you'll get to see her!
In the meantime, we are taking a few days off to settle in, adventure and tackle the garden.
Enjoy and catch you on the flippity-flip x

Scent for dogs (and cats too) - some good tips in this short read on RNZ site :)
Dogs and cats see the world through scent, so what does that mean for how we interact with them?

The first victim of new puppy = elephant !
Playing with your dog does not need to be limited to fetch or tug. Watch Marley figure out how to get panda out of the box...
This isn't his first rodeo so he's pretty quick!
The speed on this video has been increased.
Marley likes to party, but he also likes to mosey.
Figure out and give them the chance to do what they enjoy! (Or an equivalent appropriate outlet)
Possum tails!
Some dogs love to hold them and carry them, some love to kill-shake, some de-fluff, some nibble, some eat bits, and some do this like Chester!
(Thank you to his human for sending the video!)
Today's win- a dog jumped in to the car all by himself!!!!!!!
It's never a competition. Success is different for every individual and celebrating those respective wins are one of the many reasons I do this.
Here's the last video I took of Izzy before things all changed, just over a month ago. Just like every dog, she was the best x
If you look closely you can make out the highly camoflauged, mighty hunting poodle. A special breed, their style involves a lot of tail movement, sniffing and unashamedly having no success, but an awful lot of fun.
And now he rests.
Hidden gem alert! Did you know the local Renwick SPCA has a shop with some cool toys at their centre? We popped out this week and here's the result;
Marley is VERY happy with his new hippo and the other weird sound in the background is Wilson with a Triceratops.
Izzy is in bed of course, but even she's enjoying a squeaky cow to nibble on.
Taking food gently, a handy life skill
Izzy is on medication for her spondylosis deformans. Three tablets twice a day is currently the lowest effective dose for her.
After all the usual hiding tricks failed, we needed a different method of administration.
Of course we could just open her mouth and stick them down her throat but just because we could, doesn't mean we should.
On to a winner here with a shaved meat roll up. The tablets are put on one slice of shaved chicken or ham, rolled and she takes it this easily...blink and you'll miss it!
How good is Marley's arthritis medication?
This good...
Home delivery!
Chester did the best sit and then got to unwrap his own treasure...eventually...There is a process.
Our pets can sometimes be a dream come true and sometimes it doesn’t quite go according to plan...
The Dog You Have is a page where you can share in the journey of learning how to have a more enjoyable life with the creatures in the household.
My name is Lisa and when I was younger I remember asking for a dog. It never happened and to be honest I was a little scared of them. All of that changed when along came a 9 week old ball of poodle fluff - Wilson! A few years later while volunteering at the SPCA Marley joined the gang…not long after that a crazy little Izzy and then the two whitewalkers (cats). Gosh if I knew then what I know now how things would be different!
I’ve now got a Certificate in Companion Animal Care from Otago, a Diploma in Rescue Dog Rehabilitation and Cognition through Canine Principles, run puppy preschool classes, have a background in animal welfare and veterinary environments, have completed a six month mentorship programme with Lewis Nicholls and Hannah Sadgrove, as well as hands on experience with dogs in boarding, one on one, shelter and foster situations, HUNDREDS (thousands) of hours of research/theory, a walking group, plus ongoing studies with The School Of Canine Science.
I’ve been there (and continue to learn) with my own lot. If you need help, I aim to support, educate and motivate you to become the best mentor possible for your companions. Whether you’ve had dogs before or it’s all new, I’ll work with you.
