Have you got your fly strike plan in place?

Its that time again where the weather is getting warmer and the fly numbers are increasing. Flystrike is a significant animal welfare concern and is something that needs monitoring and immediate action taken if spotted in your flock.

Protecting your sheep from strike is a two part process:
1) Reducing exposure through non-chemical controls
Prevent dagginess – crutch sheep to stop faecal and urine contamination of the wool —> flies are attracted to moist smelly areas! Drench young stock regularly to ensure good parasite control.
Shearing—primary strike flies don’t need soiled wool to establish, but they do need a moist environment out of direct sunlight. Shearing removes this environment.
Timely removal of potential fly breeding grounds— don’t leave dead animals (sheep, possums, rabbits) lying around the farm as the carcasses are ideal breeding grounds for blowflies.
Docking at an appropriate length – tails too long or too short increase risk of fly strike
Treating/preventing wounds and other diseases (e.g. footrot, fleece rot) - it isn’t uncommon for footrot lesions to become struck
Use Fly traps— both for monitoring and reducing numbers

2) Reducing exposure/consequence through chemical controls
Use fly prevention products—beware that all of these products are only as good as their application—read the label!
For small holders we have Zapp Encore® - a spray on that can be given off shears. It is an older active which now has some resistance so it always pays to be vigilant even once you’ve applied a product. It will kill active strike along while having claims to prevent further strike and the ability to kill Lice.
For larger holders we have a selection of products available dependent on how you plan on applying it. Please talk to our friendly team to find the best product for you.

Pancreatitis in dogs is something we see frequently. Here is some information on what it is, what to look out for and how it is treated.

What is it?
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas produces digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin (which regulates blood sugar). The condition is painful and can be life threatening or fatal.
Pancreatitis can present quite suddenly or can be a longer term condition. It is often seen in dogs middle aged (7 years) and older but younger dogs can also be affected.

What are the clinical signs?
Not all cases will show all signs, but we commonly see a loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and lethargy.

What causes it?
Pancreatitis is commonly seen after feeding of high fat table scraps (e.g. fatty leftovers from a roast, sausages, lamb, and pork fat, among others). Some cases also present after a change of diet if the new diet is much higher in fat than the dog’s previous diet (e.g. moving from a weight loss diet to a regular diet). Sometimes, the cause is unknown.
There is a strong link between obesity and pancreatitis. It is very important to keep your dog’s weight/body condition in the ideal range – if you have any concerns about your pet’s weight book in to see one of our team.

Diagnosis and Treatment
A thorough exam by a vet and blood testing is required to confirm a diagnosis of pancreatitis. Treatment depends on how severely your dog is affected - for severe cases, hospitalization for multiple days will be required. A lifelong dietary change is often required to manage the condition and prevent recurrence.
Prevention is much easier than cure! Keep your dog in the ideal body condition range and do not feed table scraps or “human food”!
