Parvovirus: what it does, why puppies are most at risk, and long-term effects

Parvovirus (often called parvo) is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus that mainly affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It is an extremely tough virus that can survive in the environment for months, making exposure easy and prevention vital.

What does parvovirus affect?
Parvovirus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, particularly:
The gastrointestinal tract, causing severe inflammation and damage to the gut lining
The bone marrow, reducing the body’s ability to produce white blood cells
This combination leads to profuse vomiting and diarrhoea, severe dehydration, pain, and a weakened immune system, leaving puppies vulnerable to secondary infections and sepsis.

Why are puppies most affected?
Puppies have immature immune systems, and once protection from their mother’s milk fades, they rely on vaccinations to stay protected. Until their full vaccination course is complete, puppies are especially vulnerable.
Unvaccinated adult dogs can also become very ill, but puppies are far more likely to develop severe or fatal disease.

Are there long-term effects?
Some dogs that survive parvovirus can experience long-term consequences, including:
Ongoing digestive sensitivity or chronic gut issues
Poor growth or delayed development if infected at a young age
In severe cases, lasting damage to the immune system
Puppies infected very early in life may also develop heart complications, though this is less common today due to vaccination

Prevention is the best protection
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent parvovirus. Keeping puppies away from high-risk areas until fully vaccinated and maintaining good hygiene also plays an important role.

If your puppy shows signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea (especially bloody), lethargy, or loss of appetite, seek veterinary care immediately — early treatment can be life-saving.

Contact us if you’d like to discuss vaccinations or have concerns about parvovirus.

This weeks FE Spore results
We have edited how it looks from last year after some feedback that it was difficult to read, we hope this works better. As the counts go past each threshold the bars will change colour.

We have been unable to get a reading from 2 of the sites so keep in mind they may not be at zero.

Protect them from the very start

Vaccinating your puppy or kitten is one of the most important steps you can take to give them a healthy start in life. Their first 3 vaccinations help protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, while also supporting their growing immune system during those crucial early months.

To help keep them protected inside and out, we’re offering a FREE Bravecto flea treatment when your puppy or kitten completes their first 3 vaccinations with us.

Flea prevention is just as important as vaccination. Fleas can cause irritation, skin infections, allergic reactions and can even transmit other parasites. Starting flea control early helps keep your new family member comfortable, healthy, and protected all year round.

📞 Book your puppy or kitten’s vaccinations today and give them the best possible start in life.
Because prevention now means fewer worries later. Call 06 322 2333 to book!

*The last two vaccinations must be done at SRVS

Tawhiri’s Story

Tawhiri was brought to us suddenly very unwell. He was lethargic, shaky, and his muscles were trembling. After talking with his owner, our vet Dr Lucy suspected he had been poisoned after eating some flax plants.

What likely caused this was tremorgenic mycotoxin poisoning. These are toxins made by moulds and fungi. Dogs most often come into contact with them by eating mouldy garden waste, compost heaps, rubbish, or rotting plant material where moisture allows mould to grow.

Our small animal team acted quickly. Tawhiri was given intralipid therapy, a special fatty fluid given through the vein that helps bind and neutralise these toxins in the bloodstream. He was also given activated charcoal by mouth to soak up any toxins that might still have been in his stomach.

These toxins can be very serious and may cause seizures or even be fatal. Dogs do best when treatment happens quickly. Once symptoms like shaking have started, close monitoring is essential.

Tawhiri was transferred to Massey after-hours for overnight care and monitoring. Thankfully, he responded very well to treatment, improved rapidly, and made a full recovery.

He’s now back home safe and sound with his family
