Dallas Hopkins Equestrian

Dallas Hopkins Equestrian At DHE our goal is to produce happy, confident riders and calm, capable horses.

Working in conjunction with Maven Grove Sporthorses, Dallas Hopkins Equestrian is a business providing coaching, starting, schooling and mentoring. We have a kind and patient approach to the training of horses and believe that taking the time to train responses at a foundation level produces calm and confident horses for any discipline. As a coach and mentor Dallas brings this vision to reality fo

r the rider as well, teaching not only the method but the why behind the method, all while creating a positive and judgement free environment. In addition to her National Diploma in Equitation Science, Dallas has trained and competed on the national circuit under the guidance of top International Riders, with this experience comes a vast wealth of knowledge which Dallas am more than happy to share. Being located within the Selwyn District comes with the advantage of being close to a number of purpose built training facilities. All horses trained at Dallas Hopkins Equestrian enjoy great variety in their training, with access to the arena at Maven Grove Sporthorses for dressage and show jumping schooling, or cross country and hacking at a variety of facilities in the area.

2024 Recap: The year started off on a high with Stamp winning the Bronze League Novice dressage championship in Ashburton, only to have an accident the day before Canterbury Champs the following weekend and have to be scratched.

Then Gus and Stamp went off for their respective surgeries. Gus for a lump removal from the digital nerve/tendon and Stamp for 3 high suspensories. At the same time I unfortunately had to put Quizz down as the result of a paddock injury. I also went off to have my knee reconstruction surgery! This has been a painfully slow and problematic rehabilitation but fingers crossed I’m finally on the home stretch 🤞

Gus recovered well and we thought Stamp did too initially but after his first jump back he was more unsound than ever and the prognosis was looking like his ridden career would be over forever, especially with no access to an MRI here in NZ. Not one to give up though, we are trying everything in the book to help him bounce back and he is tentatively working his way back into work, with relative success so far.

Gus had a fabulous 95 event run with Brodie being a fantastic pilot as always (she tolerates his expressiveness like a pro). Then he proved that he might have dressage potential after all at the champs just recently, pulling a few top placings after a consistent track record of dead last 😂 for all of you who love his possessed llama 🦙 routine, it’s still there it’s just a little more tamed!

My darling homebred Queenie came home and is proving that Quizz read her the manual in the womb by being potentially the easiest horse in the world to train 🤩

And lastly probably the most devastating news of my life happened most recently but my best friend of all time had to cross the rainbow bridge after just over 13 years as my shadow. Atticus was more than a “pet dog”, he was my life companion and as many of you know, I never went anywhere without him. The loss of him has been heavy and I’m sure he will be missed by many 🤍

As always I want to thank everyone for their support and loyalty throughout the year, it takes an army to keep ticking over and make it all possible. I’m incredibly grateful!

Bring on 2025!

Everyone loves some Stamp spam! It’s a bit delayed but thought a Championship update was due before we had a crack at South Island Championships over the next 3 days 🤞 so if you like a bit of chaos… read on 😂

So thanks to the ridiculous winds on Saturday morning, I thought we weren’t going to make it (I don’t like driving the giant chest freezer on wheels that is Darcy in strong winds) but we decided last minute to go. I was late submitting my music for the freestyle, a horse got loose and ran into Stamp while trying to retap a stud hole causing the tool to snap off in the hole, turns out I don’t own bridle numbers so the ring steward wrote on my saddle pad in vivid 😢 and then I had to be moved to the end of the class because my music wouldn’t play 🤦🏼‍♀️ and as a cherry on top I forgot to include 2 movements in my test…. Oops! Thankfully we pulled it together for the second test and won!

Sunday was without wind but incredibly hot, we had a great first test pulling in 4th against all the more experienced combinations. Then the pilot got lost/confused twice in the afternoon test but somehow still came through with a win 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Overall the golden pony took out overall champion for the bronze league 💛🥇 and we can’t wait for the next 3 days!!

Massive thank you to the Ashburton committee and the sponsors for making it all happen!

In the meantime enjoy these photos taken by the amazing which highlight how talented is at turning out!

It all started when...

Maven Grove first flourished after years of brainstorming ideas in late 2018. By definition Maven is another term used to describe an expert in a particular field and Grove offers a sense of tranquility which is important when training horses. It was on these basic principals that Maven Grove was born.

We have a goal here of teaching tools to both riders and horses as part of their foundation to a successful and mutually beneficial partnership. We also want to demonstrate that prioritising relaxation as part of your relationship with your horse doesn’t come at the expense of talent or competitiveness - it is in fact quite the opposite. When you have a genuinely relaxed horse you are able to develop increased clarity, confidence and focus when riding which supports you both to perform at your peak.
