Iron.
There's a bit of chit chat at the moment about iron levels in feeds, and how they are all too high (well the majority of them), because soils and water supplies are already super high, and so how we need to feed as low iron as possible to counteract this.
Now, to some extents, this is a really important conversation - excess iron can have pretty severe consequences for the health of your equine, as well as leading to behavioral and coat quality issues. So you want to get it right!
And in certain parts of the country, such as the Waikato, natural iron levels can be extremely high.
But the issue I have with all of this is that we need to be careful that we don't go changing everything in a panic, in order to feed as little iron as possible, without understanding that the key to health is BALANCE.
We need to balance every nutrient in a horse's feed, not just iron. We need to balance iron with copper and zinc especially. And we need to take into account the unique needs of every single horse, because just like us, each one is different.
If we don't take this into account we can end up with more issues than those we started with, and wind up feeling more confused to boot.
So, use the KISS concept. (Keep it simple sausage) (I added the sausage 😋)
Start with a base of plenty of forage and fibre.
Then, if your horse is in work, they may need a bit extra, such as a concentrated feed or extruded grain.
And last, analyze your feeding regime to make sure what you are feeding is balanced. You can use a program such as FeedXL to do this, or contact us to allow us to completely personalize your horse's feed (using our own program developed in-house by nutrition and data scientists), as well as keep things simple, and your costs as low as possible.
