To Chaff or Not to Chaff? That is the question!

Many horse owners in New Zealand often ask:
“Do I need to feed chaff to my horse?” Especially in instances where there is an abundance of pasture or ad-lib hay.

In North America, the UK and Europe chaff is generally only fed to horses who are sick or old and unable to chew hay efficiently. The need for making chaff from hay in Australia was initially due to the poor quality dry and fibrous hays which were often wasted and poorly accepted. This trend of feeding chaff was then adopted by other countries who have followed this feeding method such as New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Middle East.

Types of Chaff🌾
Oaten and wheaten chaff are often referred to as ‘white’ chaff due to their light colour. Oaten hay is grown specially for chaff production and is cut during the milk seed head stage before the plant has reached full maturity. This produces a sweeter and more palatable chaff as the sugars are higher in the leaf and stem during this time.
Alternatively, wheaten chaff tends to consist of more lignified mature fibre (more stalky) due to it typically being made from wheat stubble or a failed wheat crop (for example, due to drought).

Lucerne chaff also referred to as ‘green chaff’ and has a higher protein and natural calcium content than cereal chaff, making it a preferable choice for performance horses as well as aged or growing horses. Lucerne chaff is made from lucerne hay which has been harvested to produce a prime quality chaff with a high leaf content. Many chaff manufacturers also offer mixed chaff consisting of both lucerne and oaten or a combination of lucerne, oaten and wheaten chaff.

Pros and Cons of Feeding Chaff🐴
According to Dr John Kohnke, feeding an equal volume of long chop chaff with your horse’s concentrates (grain feeds) can increase the chewing time and optimise digestive attack and energy uptake from the small intestine. However, feeding more than 1.5 times the volume of chaff (especially short chop) to concentrates can reduce digestive efficiency as the chaff is not chewed properly and smothers the starch, protein and fat digestive enzyme attack. This moves the feed bulk through the small intestine more rapidly (up to 45 cm per minute), reducing the ‘dwell time’ and overall digestive processes.

Chaff can also make a relatively simple and low energy carrier for giving overweight horses and ponies their required supplements. Many horses will happily consume their daily supplements in as little as 200 grams of lucerne chaff which adds very minimal energy to the overall ration.

Furthermore, lucerne chaff can be used in a pre-exercise feed to aid in the prevention of gastric ulcers. Feeding 1 litre per 100 kg of body weight of lucerne hay 30 minutes before exercise was found to reduce the incidence of gastric acid irritation and gastric ulceration in exercising horses by up to 50%, compared to grass hay.
