Repost from @ brianhorohoe - The first of Cheltenham runners for the festival this year.We are used a drill to add extra pitch to the nails holes allowing us to get higher nails which makes for a more secure hold and does less damage than lower weaker nails that break up the foot .Also by useing higher stronger nails instead of the traditional 7 nails we use only 5 nails three on the outside two on the inside this is a method I tried out a few years back and found we got the same length out of a set of shoes as when we were useing 7 nails but feet were much stronger as a result of less damage done by fewer nails and if a horse over-reached or got his hoof stuck in something there was little to no damage done when the shoe was pulled off where as with 7 nails large sections of the hoof can be brought with the pulled shoe. I also like to shoe my runner a week to 10 days before they run if possible to make sure they are comfortable as possible and have had a few days to adjust to the new shoes /foot length .
