Have you noticed all of the bird babies around the Park lately? Our team have seen a huge increase in the survival rate of the offspring of native waterfowl and wading birds around the Park. Our site wide pest control programme along with an increase in riparian planting this season has had a massive impact on their survival rates.

In our last bird survey there were 17* different native or endemic bird species seen around the Park grounds including; Australian coot (🎥), sacred kingfisher, scaup and paradise shelduck.

Next time you visit the Park, bring your binoculars and see how many you can spot!

You can help protect these precious species as well, consider joining a trapping group, plant native stems and create safe spaces in your garden for birds, invertebrates and reptiles. For more information visit our website https://www.oranawildlifepark.co.nz/conservation/conservation-at-home/

*This number varies throughout the year, the 2024 survey was completed in January.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ A zebra's stripes are unique to each individual, it is also believed because of this that their stripes have a social purpose, by helping zebras to recognise one other.

The past month has been really challenging for our dedicated keepers and team. We sadly said goodbye to a number of our precious animals.

Mischief (20) the llama (cancer) and Effy (12) the sheep (old age health issues) were much loved as thousands of visitors met these animals in our Farmyard over many years.

Belize (35) our elderly spider monkey had an incurable tumour, Tama (15) the gracious lioness passed from a brain haemorrhage, Toba (7) the senior Tasmanian devil suffered heart failure and tragically Boris (1½) the addax experienced respiratory complications.

All of these beloved animals were under treatment plans in consultation with our vet.

Our animals are part of our whānau at Orana and each death is a very sad occasion for the whole team, but especially the keepers who build up a very special bond with the animals. We ask for your kindness and respect with your comments.

We do want to share some positive news with you too. Two delightful whio ducklings hatched and will be released to the wild once mature. Our first fertile kiwi egg of the season is being incubated by male, Manawa. Siamang pair Basuki and S**a have their hands full with their very active delightful baby, Berani.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Nyala are one of the most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism (the difference in appearance between males and females) of all antelope.

The males have large spiral horns and a shaggy grey-brown coat, whereas females are hornless and have a chestnut brown coat with white stripes, they are also about half the size of a male nyala.

Juvenile males are born with the same colouring as females, it isn't until they start to mature that the colouring will change.

Our nyala on display currently show the different development stages of males from a juvenile male with very small horns (pictured) and a chestnut coating through to a mature male with large spiral horns. You can find them opposite the Great Ape Centre.
