Berani has been testing her arm strength, under the watchful eye of Mum, who is quick to grab her when she gets a little too close to the edge.
Berani is certainly living up to her name meaning (daring or fearless)as there is a two metre drop under the platform they are on 😱

Siamang gibbons are built for swinging, their arm span can be up to 1.5m! These extra long arms enables them to cover up your 3m in a single swing. Their arms are also used for balance when walking along tree branches and ropes/vines.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Almost all mammals have seven cervical vertebrae (neck bones), with only three known exceptions, the manatee with six, the two-toed sloth with five/six, and the three-toed sloth with nine.

The difference in neck length comes down to the size of each vertebrae, for giraffe, each one is around 25 cm, and humans are about 1cm in height.

Today is International Gibbon Day! So we thought we would share a video of our youngest resident gibbon Berani 🥰 As you can see Mum Basuki is very patient while being used as a jungle gym!

There are 20 different species of gibbon and sadly all of them are regarded as threatened on the IUCN Red List. Our resident gibbon family are siamang gibbons, they are the largest of the species.

To help gibbons and other animals in the wild please ensure you don’t purchase souvenirs made from animal products.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Butterflies taste with their feet, the receptors on their legs are also 200 times stronger than human taste buds. When a butterfly lands on a plant, they use these sensors to determine if what they are standing on is edible or not and sense whether it is sweet, bitter, sour or salty.

They do have some taste buds on their proboscis and some on their antennae as well, but most of the taste buds are focused on their feet.

14-20 October is Save the Kiwi Week.

Orana is proud to be part of the captive component of the kiwi recovery programme. Sadly 95% of kiwi chicks that hatch in the wild where there is no predator control will die before they reach breeding age.

One of the things you can do to help kiwis in the wild is by keeping your dog on a leash, you can find out more on how else dogs and kiwi can safely be around one another here: https://savethekiwi.nz/dogs-and-kiwi/

A massive thank you to those who headed along to the gender reveal for our beautiful siamang baby.

As so many people have been asking what baby is and their name we decided to do a public reveal at the Park this afternoon.

We are delighted to announce the baby is a girl and she has been named Berani, which means bold, brave, fearless or courageous in Malay. She is definitely all of those things when she clings on to Mum while she flies across the ropes at speed!

🦏🦎🦒October 4 marks a very special day: International Zookeeper Day and World Animal Day, making it one of the most important dates in the zoo calendar!

🐾Today, we celebrate our incredible animal keepers who care for all of the precious animals we are privileged to hold at Orana. Their hard work goes far beyond feeding and cleaning; they are passionate advocates for wildlife conservation and play a vital role in educating the public about the plight of these species and inspiring us all to take action for the animals that share our world 🐾

🪺🪶Zookeeping is not glamourous, it is hard work, it is smelly and dirty, however it is also incredibly rewarding. Please take a moment to show your appreciation for our amazing team below ⬇️

Zoo School is opening its doors on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 October to display our CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) items.

Doors to Zoo School will be open 12:30pm-2:00pm.

These pieces have been loaned to us by DOC and MPI to help educate the public around purchasing souvenirs while overseas.

CITES is a world-wide agreement to prevent trade in endangered, threatened, or exploited species. Sadly, many animal and plant species are being driven to extinction by poachers to make these items. If people stop buying them then the demand will stop and there will be no reason to poach them anymore. So when on holiday please only take photos and bring home memories of the amazing animals and plants you have seen, so they will be there for future generations to enjoy.
