We were thrilled to have seven of our precious kākāriki karaka chicks join 13 more from our friends at The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust for the second release EVER of kākāriki karaka to Anchor Island just over a week ago!

Anchor Island is one of only a few predator-free sanctuaries where this taonga species can be released to safely. Our team are privileged to be helping to populate this recently established site.

The third and final release of the season is scheduled for next month 🙌

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Zebra foals are able to recognize their mother from birth in order to survive. A foal learns its mother’s stripe pattern (which is unique like a fingerprint) so they can follow her. Mothers will often separate from the herd a short distance so that their foals can imprint on them. Once the foal can identify its mother, the mare and her foal return to the herd for protection.

Happy International Tasmanian Devil Day 🙌 Today we celebrate the largest carnivorous marsupial.

April 1 was chosen for ITDD because most Tasmanian devils are born in the first week of April. It is hard to tell the exact dates as Tasmanian devils give birth to 40 jellybean sized babies and it is survival of the fittest as their are only four teats in the mothers pouch.

Tasmanian devils were once found across mainland Australia, sadly they are now only found in Tasmania.
Our mischievous boys Darana, Chester Campbell, John and Talei are wonderful ambassadors for their wild cousins, as in the wild they face serious threats, including habitat loss, road collisions, and disease, making conservation critical.

🎥: Some special ITDD enrichment for the boys.

This Whio Awareness Week, we want to celebrate the incredible legacy of Mrs Whio, our superstar mumma duck who sadly passed away last month at the age of 9—outliving the typical whio lifespan of 7–8 years.

Since arriving at Orana in 2017 as part of the Whio Recovery Programme, Mrs Whio and her devoted partner, Mr Whio, have had close to 80 ducklings—most of whom have been released into the wild! With only around 3,000 whio left in the wild, her contribution to the survival of this precious species is nothing short of remarkable.

Her impact lives on in the rivers and streams where her ducklings now thrive. Our team is honoured to be part of this vital recovery programme, and we will always remember Mrs Whio’s role in helping secure a future for her species.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY X WHIO AWARENESS WEEK ❓ The upper bill of a whio has a tiny comb-like structure (lamellae) around the edge of the beak, this allows the whio to strain small insects and plants out of the water.

Sadly whio are a threatened species, they were once found throughout New Zealand. Today they are limited to Urewera, East Cape and central areas of the North Island, along the West Coast of the South Island from Nelson to Fiordland. The most recent releases site has been in South Westland.

Whio need your help, they may seem tame and unafraid, but to keep them safe you should give them space and watch them from a distance. When out in their territory ensure you keep the waterways and the river environment clean by taking out what you bring in, and leave your dogs at home or keep them on a leash.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓The newborn joey of a Tasmanian devil is the size of a grain of rice!
The mother gives birth to around 20-40 joeys at once. However, these joeys have to beat their siblings to her pouch, as it only has four teats.
The joey's live in their mother’s pouch for around three months before they start to venture out on their own.
