AUTUMN 🍂 is here and this is the important time of year for drenching and getting on top of hooves before Winter ❄️. My diary for March is pretty full with mostly just the last week of the month with good availability.

Remember, goats hooves should be trimmed at least 4 times per year (minimum), recently I have been getting blisters and even broke my shears on goats that do not get done often enough - I am looking to introduce a surcharge for cases like this as it’s not fun for my hands or equipment!

Anyone lucky enough to get any Autumn CALVES who need disbudding, get in touch, the best age is 2-6 weeks old 🐮

Hi everyone 😊

I’m heading away for two weeks after a very big year of no breaks! My own 6 pet calves are weaned and enjoying their new shed made completely by me - little bit proud! 🙈✔️ While I’m away I’ll have limited internet so will respond to queries when I can.

The next Oxford/Ohoka trip has only one maybe two spots left and will be approx early March. All other areas by request!

Pigs! 🐷

Miss Ethel had her hooves trimmed today, my first ever pig. I learnt that the hoof structure is essentially the same as doing sheep and goats but they just a “little” bit more difficult to restrain! Always a work around though like this girl wasn’t happy with her hooves lifted so to give her a good experience we did them whilst she was standing , i am big on creating a positive experience so next time won’t be a fearful experience! You do need a smallish area to contain your pig in and a decent bucket of feed helps too!!

Hi everyone 😀

An EXTRA Oxford / West Melton day trip this coming Tuesday 28th has been requested! I have space for ONE more job - goat hoof trim/drench, sheep hoof trim/drench, cattle worm drench/fly prevention drench/B12 with selenium & Also consulting in 1hr sessions about animal health/paddock/yard design.

This will be the last trip out Oxford ways until March as I’m going overseas. Booking requests need to be made prior to Friday 24th!!

This week’s things to take note of! 📖

FACILITIES! These become SO important as your cute, little calves or lambs become big (or massive in my case), strong animals! This is my very basic cattle crush set up at home - it has a wooden head bale at the front but without this I could NEVER treat these big boys safely OR effectively!! I have done a course in lifestyle block sustainability and design so if anyone would like help or advice I’m more than happy to offer this service - it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to get a functional set up 👍

FLIES! 🪰 🪰 These are very much around causing problems like Fly Strike (maggots 🤮) as I’ve come across two cases in the last week! This weather with so much rain, damp ground and sun is the perfect conditions unfortunately! I have both a prevention drench for cattle and sheep, so get in touch if you’d like your animals done

Today’s find when disbudding…

Correct placement when applying ear tags avoids awful infections like this poor calf has suffered. This tag was too far inside the ear. I had to cut the nait tag in order to drain the pus completely and allow the ear to recover due to the swelling.

Often people think disbudding is “expensive” especially when you have a small number of calves, yet it’s finds like this that is what we are trained to detect when doing an overall health check on the calf.

What a day! Disbudding/Castrating/Ear tagging calves, remedial Hoof trimming on goats and massaging horses oh and meeting some GORGEOUS wee kittens and a miniature Galloway calf 🤩 Thanks for the good company and well behaved animals! That’s North Canterbury wrapped up for 2024! 🙌🐐🐮🐴

Do you have a goat? 🐐 When is the last time you trimmed their hooves? Did you know their hooves grow extremely fast and need to be trimmed at the least 3 times per year. Any less than this and the heels get under run and the hoof wall grows out covering the sole and also thickens. This makes it extremely tough for me to trim and can also make hoof issues like thrush, hoof wall separation etc to go un noticed by owners not to mention the poor goat being uncomfortable!

As the ground is now super dry and rock hard it’s super important to take care of your goats hooves! I have some spaces left before Christmas if anyone needs any goats done. For pricing, please message the page with number of goats and your location 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
