A busy despite FREEZING 🥶 day in Oxford and Cust disbudding calves today! My car thermometer started at 7 degrees when I left home and ended on 2 degrees 🫣 Everykne today got the “full Monty” getting disbudded, vaccinated and castrated the boys! Much easier doing it all while they’re sedated and having pain relief on board.

My diary for the next month is really full with limited spaces for smaller jobs. Message the page for any prices (include your location, number of calves and their age now). 😊

Lameness in this muddy time!

I’m seeing A LOT of lame animals (sheep, goats and cattle). I have talked about hoof wall separation in an earlier post which is still proving a bit problematic in a lot of animals however when a combination of mud/grass/hay builds up and becomes trapped between the toes it festers away into a bacterial infection (known as thrush in horses or hoof rot in other species). If your animal is limping or even better (not limping) but you can see crap packed in, lift the hoof and remove it. If there’s an infection it’ll look black on the debri and stinky (maybe even red and p***y between the toes. You then need to give a good spray with a antibacterial hoof spray like alamycin, koppertox etc

Mid Winter update! 🥶

Unfortunately this weather is proving a real issue for a lot of stock… I have heard of several stock dying due to mineral deficiencies and weather related illnesses. The wet, boggy ground is also causing a lot of hoof wall separation in sheep and goats and lots of lameness. A few things you can and/or should do to minimise issues:

* Have a mineral block available
* Ensure adequate nutrition/feed
* Provide your animal with a cover where possible
* Access to clean & dry shelter/bedding
* Vaccinating your stock (especially pregnant/young)
* Copper sulphate foot baths

Hooves typically slow their growth over winter however I have seen phenomenal growth on the majority of sheep and goats I have been trimming so it’s important to keep an eye on them, much easier to stay on top of trimming than trying to fix a lame animal!

CALF DISBUDDING !!

It’s almost that time again - CALVING ! Which means LOTS of calves… And the majority of dairy crossed calves WILL grow horns. Even a good percentage of beef crossed calves grow horns. The ideal time to get your calf disbudded is between 2 and 6 weeks of age. Calves over 6 weeks may be charged an “older calf fee” as by this age the horn bud has began fusing to the skull and calves tend to need extra sedation/pain relief etc. if you are unsure if your calf has horn buds, feel free to send me a picture of the calf’s head.

I am a qualified rural veterinary technician and all calves get sedated, given local anaesthetic and longer term pain relief. I can also castrate bull calves, give B12 injections or clostridial vaccinations if desired (recommended).

For all enquiries, please message this page with calf numbers and your location for a quote. Please note that calving is absolutely hectic for me, so your planning in advance would really be appreciated!!

⛄️ DONT GET CAUGHT SHORT THIS WEEK!⛄️

If you have covers for your animals, use them. A barn or good shed, put them in it or let them have access! Make sure you have plenty of hay/balage/grain etc. The weather is going to get nasty and if you don’t think you can handle sitting out in an open paddock with no shelter or food then your animals can’t either.
