Osky might be one of the sassiest cats I have ever met. Last time I saw him, after his groom, he ran back and tapped his Mum on the bum to tell her off. A definite first for me 🀣

Apparently Hiccup doesn't see the point in staying out of bed this morning. He's had his breakfast, had his drugs, walked around the catio and been groomed by his feline housemates. With a productive morning like that, he's earned himself a 7am nap 😹

Pet of the month this month is Shadow!

Shadow is a beautiful 11 year old German Shepherd. No one told Shadow German Shepherds are notorious for their guard dog traits - he always greets me with a wagging tail whether his humans are home or not.

Shadow's beautiful, gentle nature is only one of the reasons he features in this month's newsletter though. Shadow has a special place in my heart as I have known him my entire nursing career and his whole life! I met Shadow as a youngster in the first Vet Clinic I secured full-time work. It has been such an honor being a part of Shadow's life and getting to know his lovely family so well. It is one of the best parts of the Mobile Nursing - I often start to feel like part of the family.

Shadow has slowed down a bit recently, but he's still always happy to see me for a nail trim and treats. Shadow is a part of one of my regular, 6-weekly Thursday groups and always has my last appointment of the day. Shadow likes it this way, as he gets to finish off all of the treats left in my pocket!

Short-haired cats don't need grooming right? - WRONG! ❌

As Oreo will tell you, short-haired carts can and do get matts. It is of course less common than long haired cats but the most common reasons I see short-haired cats with matts are:
- Overweight and unable to clean themselves well.
- Injury or pain limiting their range of movement.
- Thick/dense coat they are unable to maintain themselves.
- Senior or elderly and not able to clean themselves due to mobility or pain issues.

If you notice your cat's coat is starting to look worse for wear, they are less interested or struggling with grooming, get in touch. It is much nicer for you cat to be groomed before the matts form. πŸˆβ€β¬›

A certain little someone is growing up too fast for my liking!

Gordon is off for his first vaccination on Wednesday. He'll be ready for his forever home before we know it!

I visit Zachy, Asha and the rest of their fur family every 6 weeks for nail trims, a**l gland expression, flea and worm treatments and to deliver food. Sadly, not long after taking this photo at my last visit, the handsome Zachy (left) passed away. It will be so strange to visit next week and not have his happy wee face to greet me. 😿

Our youngest boy had a trip to the vet yesterday. Sadly, after three knee surgeries to correct both of his luxating patella Hiccup is still struggling. We think Hiccup is suffering from chronic post-op pain. There isn't anything structurally wrong with his knees anymore, they are just sore. It is so important to get on top of our pet's pain quickly to not only prevent suffering, but to prevent further complications like wind-up pain.

As soon as Hiccup started showing signs of discomfort, I had him back on anti-inflammatory pain relief while we waited for our appointment with our vet. We have now added in Gabapentin and an Opiod pain relief called Buprenorphine three times a day. We intend to give all three medications at high doses for 4-6 weeks and then try to wean this down. The key is to get Hiccup completely pain free before we start tapering any of his doses. He will remain on pain relief for the rest of his life now.

Due to his orthopedic issues and surgeries, Hiccup is very likely to develop arthritis at an early age. As a result, we already have incidental physiotherapy around the house, we keep Hiccup slim and he has a joint supplement every day. Our only other change, will be transitioning Hiccup to a Mobility diet.

Due to having long term meds, Hiccup will need more frequent check-ups and blood tests - lucky he doesn't mind car trips. I am sad that we couldn't 'fix' our boy but I am very grateful to have an amazing vet I can work with the make sure Hiccup gets the most out of life. Keeping out pets pain free is something I am incredibly passionate about. There are so many options and regardless of your pet's age, and health concerns, keeping them pain free is an absolute must!

Sacha is never THRILLED to see me. I can't blame him though, I do have to give him an e***a twice a week! Once that's over though, he doesn't typically object to a brush and a cuddle. I think he's almost asleep today!

I am super excited and proud to be sponsoring a kennel at Dogwatch ❀

This means Nursing Pawfection makes a monthly donation towards caring for the dog housed in our kennel. Not only do we get a fancy sign on the gate and know where our donation is going, but we also get regular updates on the hound residing in our kennel!

Our current resident is Hank. He's a new arrival who has had a pretty tough time of it recently. Fingers crossed he finds his forever home quickly and gets the fantastic life he deserves.

Sausage likes to have a little drama in his grooms but is happy to have some cuddles and treats after confirming all digits are still intact!

Meet Manu!

This handsome lad is not always my biggest fan. I have had to do a few shave jobs on Manu as he had developed matting which couldn't easily be combed out. Even shaving matted areas can be pretty uncomfortable and Manu is a sooky lad at the best of times! Manu's Mum has now committed to a maintenance schedule for Manu which means I see him every 3 months before the matting starts. We get to have a quick groom followed by lots of treats and Manu doesn't reach the point where he is really unhappy about what I'm doing. Just moderately displeased - he's a cat after all! His opinion of me is very slowly improving. 😽
