Winter has Christchurch in its icy grip and as we dream of warm summer days our minds should turn to maintenance, so we have come up with a great winter dental promotion for your pets.

It is an unfortunate fact that by the time cats and dogs reach the age of 6, many of them will have significant dental disease. This is not always apparent to you, their loving owner, as many pets will continue to eat well even with severe periodontal disease.

Until the end of July we are offering a Free Dental Assessment valued at $72. We will check your pet for any signs of dental disease and recommend a treatment plan, if required. This examination is absolutely free.

If your pet does get booked in for a dental procedure following the free dental assessment then they will qualify for a 15% discount off the entire dental procedure.

Offer ends 31st of July 2024.

How adorable are these English Springer Spaniel puppies!?
They where very brave for their first puppy vaccinations last week. So cute one of our nurses took one home. These puppy vaccinations protect against diseases like parvovirus which can be fatal. Check out Trade Me if you would like to contact the owner.

Many of you have heard about the suspected Babesia case in Canterbury in April. Babesia is transmitted via ticks. Although we do not usually see ticks on dogs in New Zealand, this is a good reminder to keep up to date with flea and tick control.

BRAVECTO is a convenient and effective choice for flea and tick prevention!
We stock a range of sizes of Bravecto for both cats and dogs.

Meet P**i 🥰
He was very brave for his patella repair surgery this week.
Small breed dogs are prone to "luxating patellas" which occur when the kneecap pops out of place when the dog is moving. This is often accompanied with a "skipping gait" while the dog attempts to replace the kneecap. This condition can be uncomfortable, and is repaired by realigning the muscles and their attachment. Recovery is enhanced with physical rehabilitation, which can get these little guys back to zoomies in no time!

Meet Pippi!
Pippi suffered from a broken radius and ulna after rough-housing with a sibling. Luckily for Pippi, we were able to quickly repair the fracture and here she is, one week later, walking around like nothing happened! Shout out to our fabulous rehabilitation practitioner for getting this girl in so quickly after surgery. Physical rehabilitation is key to a successful outcome!

MICROCHIPPING

There appear to have been an increasing number of older or sick cats brought into the vets or SPCA by concerned members of the public, only to find that they have not been microchipped, so their owners cannot be located easily. We advise that if you do see a cat who appears to be unwell outside in a neighbourhood, please door knock first to check that the cat is not just sitting outside their house or nearby. (Also older cats can look scraggly and thin due to senior cat conditions such as hyperthyroidism, arthritis, kidney disease, etc.)

And for all cat owners, especially those with cats who like to visit around the neighbourhood, we strongly recommend your cats are microchipped as this is the best form of identification (a collar can be lost or removed, and some rescue cats will not tolerate wearing a collar). A microchip is tiny and it’s placed underneath your cat's skin by a vet or a registered organisation, usually around the shoulder area.

Microchipping is a two-stage process: first the microchip is implanted, then it is registered on the NZ Companion Animal database, with the details of your name, address and contact number. It is very important that you keep your details up to date, so that if your cat is ever lost, and gets taken to a vet for a microchip check to try to identify the owner, you can be contacted straight away.

All of our cats and kittens for adoption are desexed and microchipped, and we initially register your details when adoption takes place. It is then your responsibility to keep the registration up to date if you move or change your phone number.

Have you checked that your cat’s microchip registration is up to date - see the diagram below for details of how to do this.

Good evening Wigram! We are seeing an increase in the number of parvovirus cases in the area. It is very important to make sure that your puppy is FULLY vaccinated before they begin to explore the world. If you know or are concerned that your animal may be due or overdue for a vaccination, give the clinic a call at 03-929-0987.
Click the link below for more information.

Parvoviruses are a large group; almost every mammal species including humans seems to have its own parvovirus. Fortunately, each virus is pretty specific about what animals it can infect (i.e., the pig parvovirus will not infect people, the canine parvovirus will not infect cats, etc.)

It has been a busy couple of days at Wigram Vet with animals getting those last minute vaccinations and a few more "oopsie" incidents as owners and their animals spend more time participating in outdoor activities. I'm happy to say we were able to help a lot of animals and their people. The nurses put in such an amazing effort, and vets certainly couldn't do their jobs without them. Happy holidays to the Wigram Vet Community!

A member of public presented us with a lost dog this morning. It is a 15 kg, tricolour, female, spitz-like dog and appears recently groomed. The dog was microchipped but unfortunately the microchip was not registered with NZCAR.
Council has picked the dog up. Please contact Christchurch City Council directly if this is your dog.

Meet Moose!

Moose is a 7-month-old French Bulldog who came to Wigram Vet to have surgery to correct his airways due to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, or BOAS.

Brachycephalic breeds such as English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Persians, Boxers, and others are more susceptible to heat-related issues due to their unique anatomy, which makes it challenging for them to cool down efficiently. These breeds are at an increased risk of heat stroke, and often have digestion issues such as vomiting and regurgitation.

Moose had a procedure to open his nostrils, shorten his soft palate, and remove his saccules making it easier to breathe. BOAS is progressive and can get worse with time. Moose's owners have given him the best chance at life by getting this procedure done early to prevent compounding issues.

If you have a brachycphalic dog or cat and are interested in knowing if corrective airway surgery is correct for your pet, give us a call today at 03 929 0987

A big welcome and introduction of our new vet Christina Morris.

Christina has come to the mainland from the north island but originally from the USA. She has a special interest in surgery including orthopaedics and corrective airway surgeries. Christina completed her masters in small animal surgery and enjoys the privilege of taking a limping, painful animal all the way through surgery and back to their normal routine, whether that be hunting, herding, or just hanging with their favourite humans.

Christina is available for all your pets needs from general health to surgery and rehabilitation.
