There’s been a lot of soul searching over the last few months. I stopped doing markets as they could be so demoralising; I met some wonderful people who filled my cup, but ultimately it was not sustainable. I went online only and again, some fabulous orders coming in. Realistically a small business needs to be able to dedicate 100% of their time to their small business and I just can’t. I truly believe in my products that are all handmade by me, I know they’re great quality BUT I’m competing with the prices of mass produced items that are generic, and appeal to most people’s wallets.

A busy week at Urban Hound with awesome orders coming through… Including this coat made especially for Tully, a Shih Tzu x Poodle. A little girl with a lot of hair! She needed a size in between a small and medium. Perfect coat for the poopy weather we’re experiencing in Otautahi at the moment.

…but what size coat do I get for my dog?! There is a sizing guide on the website AND we can customise to fit your dog’s needs. The photos here show lots of different sized dogs wearing the coats. Staffy Lexi fills out her large, whereas Staffy X Brie has room to grow in hers! Mia, our retriever, fits the large pretty perfectly (although is not a fan of coats having a very fluffy coat that doesn’t come off) Scout, our collie, is petite and fits the medium perfectly, but could do with the large length to have an even better fit.

Repurposed old maternity jeans. Everything old becomes new again… with the aid of scissors and a sewing machine! These handy containers can be used for storage, or their original pattern, as planters.
I love sitting behind the sewing machine and creating items for your dogs. I especially love it when you choose the fabrics and when you personalise them for your pooch, an occasion or for your bestest worker.
This dog coat was made for a very special employee of Lisa Duder Landscaping. Ernie is an awesome daschund who keeps the boss in line. Ernie is a fit, long, lean machine. He’ll be wearing the medium coat this winter with a row of extra snaps around his girth as he keeps trim in his job as supervisor.
We are happy to make coats, blankets, bandanas etc to suit the dog and purpose. A row of extra snaps, extra fabric in length, girth or neck, personalisation with HTV. You only need to ask and we can work around your requirements.
This gorgeous couple commissioned a bandana for each of their dogs to help them look even more handsome on the wedding day of their owners. The bigger boy even had a secret compartment on his bandana to hold the ring!
At Urban Hound we believe in being as sustainable as possible and using any waste from products made into something useful.
Hence, our snuffle mats! They’re made from pieces that are too small for coats or blankets.
Snuffle mats are enrichment toys/tools for your dog. They can slow down the fast eater, or give mental stimulation as your pup forages for food. Simply, hide your dog’s kibble or treats in the fabric and then let your dog sniff them out.
Some of the gorgeous recipients of our upcycled wool coats for dogs. Some dogs fit perfectly into either our small, medium or large and others have them tailor made for a unique fit.
