Meet Buddy the 3 year old female Bearded Dragon 🦎 Buddy presented to us in April as her owner was concerned she wasn't eating anything and hiding in the corner of her enclosure.
Heather examined Buddy and felt an obvious lump in her abdomen. The next step was to x-ray & ultrasound Buddy as we suspected these were follicles 🩻 Bearded Dragons lay eggs and the stage before the formation of a shelled egg is called a follicle. Sometimes, female reptiles can produce lots of follicles but, for various reasons, those follicles become stuck in their development. This is called follicular stasis and can make female beardies very sick.
Our imaging confirmed these were in fact follicles. Buddy was discharged to her owners with the plan to recheck her in 3 weeks to see if the follicles had changed at all. At her recheck we found the follicles had not changed in size or shape and confirmed that Buddy was suffering from follicular stasis.
Buddy was then booked in for surgery. Heather used sterile cotton buds to safely and gently pull the follicles out. If the follicles break the yolk inside would cause a nasty infection in Buddy's body, so she had to be very delicate. Buddy's ovaries were also removed during surgery to prevent this in the future.
Buddy came back to see us the next day and has recovered well at home ♥️

We want to welcome our new team member Elora 😍 Elora has joined our team as a new full time vet 🐾
Elora graduated from Massey University in 2019. Immediately prior to starting vet school, she completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Honours, majoring in the Molecular Basis of Health and Disease at The University of Otago in 2014. She initially started as a mixed vet working mostly with dairy cows and lifestyle block animals, then transitioned into solely companion animals in 2021.
Elora has experience in soft tissue surgery, dental procedures and managing long term medical conditions. She has a particular interest in disease diagnosis and microscope work stemming from her previous degree.
A self-confessed 'cat person', she has two beautiful moggies that adopted her and that definitely receive far too many treats. She grew up in Christchurch and loves exploring the never-ending cafés. Outside of work she finds joy in going to the gym, ballet, and spending time with friends and family.

🐾 World Vet Day is all about celebrating the essential health work vets do. Vets in New Zealand play a crucial role in the human-animal bond by ensuring our companion animals stay healthy.
🐰 Vets work incredibly hard behind the scenes, but without them the world of pet ownership and much of human life as we know it would not be possible.

🐶 International Guide Dog Day was established to raise awareness about the important work that guide dogs do and to recognise the dedication and commitment of the people who train and work with them.
🐾 This day is also an opportunity to celebrate the special bond that exists between guide dogs and their handlers, and the important role that guide dogs play in the lives of people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision.
♥ Another way to celebrate this day is to support organisations that provide guide dogs to people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision, like ours. Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs does not receive any Government funding and are 100% reliant on donations and volunteers to support their work.
