πŸ“£ PET OWNERS MUST WATCH THIS!

Barley grass seeds can pose a serious risk to pets if they become lodged in their skin, ears, or paws. The pointed shape of these seeds allows them to easily burrow into the fur or skin, where they can cause irritation, infection, or even migrate deeper into the body. If they become embedded, they may lead to abscesses, inflammation, or other health issues that may require veterinary intervention.

Tips for Prevention:
Regular Grooming: Regularly brush your pet’s fur to remove any seeds or plant matter that may have become trapped, especially after outdoor activities in areas with barley grass.

Keep Pets on Leashes: Avoid letting your pet roam in areas with dense barley grass or other seed-producing plants, as this reduces the likelihood of them coming into contact with the seeds.

Check After Walks: After walking or playing outside, thoroughly check your pet’s coat, paws, ears, and eyes for any seeds that might have attached themselves.

Protective Clothing: Consider using pet-specific protective clothing, like booties or a protective jacket, when walking through fields or grassy areas that may have barley grass.

Trim Fur Shorter: In areas where barley grass is common, keeping your pet's fur trimmed can reduce the likelihood of seeds becoming tangled in it.

If you suspect a seed has become lodged in your pet's skin, ears, or eyes, it’s important to seek veterinary attention immediately.

🚨 HAPPENING NOW 🚨

Our team in Los Angeles is currently at a local shelter pulling dogs for a transport happening tomorrow morning. We are also coordinating more transports to help get pets out of Los Angeles and away from the fires, but we need YOUR help to make that happen!

We are in desperate need of large airline crates to help us safely transport dogs. This size crate is almost impossible to find in the LA area as stores are completely out. Here’s how you can help: πŸ‘‡

β€’ If you have a large size airline crate you are willing to donate (preferably 40"L x 27"W x 30"H) and are local to the LA area, please drop it off at our Pet Adoption Center TODAY. These will be used for tomorrow’s transport. The address is: 1845 Pontius Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90025
β€’ If you are NOT local to the area to drop off a crate you are wanting to donate, you can purchase one on Amazon to send to our team for future transports. https://www.amazon.com/Aspen-Porter-Travel-Kennel-pounds/dp/B000MT5AR2/ref=sr_1_6?crid=MR4RDBLCKUZZ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3cpLdengW3Azw0mG9btPAgz_MoDh5_qBMPds0Q5VtTZxuXYIOx4FS_oIQV-TqNmGceZHay3RCN1wMG_l-Ev_z04MdhTOWh7NXTFiZaqlyoL3ahCU2ju5i1c8Ptqgvf_XiXIgB91kNAtr5HHb5_LS1C-G3RaewnqCr_8rImBgFcNzdUNRyIyPuyLCMUZKW0u3PpdlpzhRdAmIqDRBEVLO5zjvXoburdooAwOZvMMx0alVDavD3xFFzz-XAp2KbDoV9yxxPfPnCoWQXgGVONlqzN2rUhj4s-rwpOzhwuahB3Kr7CKONwM61wG0UV8QBDxmov218tiAL4NK1W5eipxoi56CDs-E5BzlZ_HMxOAyGmI.tbcqJRCWu-gFEUKc7BxNB6ksRqLkbkI0sT4pUAoVlyk&dib_tag=se&keywords=airline%2Bcrate%2BDog%2BKennel%2B40%22&qid=1736536421&s=pet-supplies&sprefix=airline%2Bcrate%2Bdog%2Bkennel%2B40%2B%2Cpets%2C146

When is the right time to say "Goodbye"? πŸ’™
In my role as a vet nurse, I often engage in heartfelt discussions with pet owners about the delicate question of when to bid farewell to their beloved companions. While many perceive this as the most challenging aspect of my job, I find solace in knowing that, in most cases, we are providing a profound act of kindness for the pet and often, for the owner as well, albeit they may not realize it at the time.

When contemplating whether it's time to consider euthanasia, I advocate for a methodical approach. I encourage pet owners to compile a handwritten list detailing the unique markers of their pet's quality of life. These may range from fundamental activities like eating and drinking to more nuanced behaviours such as playing with a favourite toy or enjoying a stroll. This exercise not only serves as a tangible reference point but also fosters a more objective assessment of the pet's well-being.

Deciding whether it's time to put a pet to sleep can be an incredibly difficult and emotional decision. Here are some signs that may indicate it's time to consider euthanasia for your pet:

Chronic pain: If your pet is in constant pain despite medication and other treatments, and their quality of life is significantly diminished, euthanasia may be a humane option.

Loss of appetite and weight loss: If your pet refuses to eat or has a decreased appetite for an extended period, leading to significant weight loss and malnutrition, it may indicate a serious underlying health issue.

Incontinence or inability to control bodily functions: If your pet has lost control over their bladder or bowels and is unable to perform basic bodily functions without distress, it can severely impact their quality of life.

Difficulty breathing: Respiratory problems can be distressing for pets and may indicate serious underlying health issues such as heart or lung disease. If your pet is struggling to breathe despite medical intervention, euthanasia may be considered to prevent further suffering.

Loss of mobility: Pets that are no longer able to stand, walk, or move around comfortably due to old age, injury, or illness may experience a significant decline in their quality of life.

Chronic illness with poor prognosis: If your pet has a terminal illness with no chance of recovery and the treatment options only offer temporary relief or further suffering, euthanasia may be a compassionate choice to prevent prolonged pain and distress.

Behavioural changes: Severe behavioural changes such as aggression, confusion, disorientation, or withdrawal may indicate underlying pain or neurological issues that cannot be effectively managed.

Lack of response to treatment: If your pet's condition is not improving despite medical treatment and their suffering continues unabated, euthanasia may be considered to prevent further discomfort.

Loss of interest in favourite activities: Pets that no longer engage in activities they once enjoyed, such as playing, socializing, or interacting with family members, may be experiencing a significant decline in their quality of life.

Loss of consciousness or seizures: If your pet experiences recurrent seizures or lapses into unconsciousness, it may indicate a severe neurological issue or imminent organ failure, necessitating euthanasia to prevent further suffering.

Ultimately, the decision to euthanize a pet should be made in consultation with a veterinarian who can assess your pet's condition and provide guidance based on their medical expertise and understanding of your pet's individual needs and circumstances.

As a collective effort devised by grief counsellors, veterinarians, and ethicists, this approach ensures that decisions are rooted in the pet's needs rather than the owner's emotional attachment. By monitoring and updating the list as the pet's condition evolves, pet owners can navigate this challenging journey with greater clarity and compassion.

Ultimately, the decision to say goodbye should prioritize the pet's comfort and dignity, even if it means bearing some extra pain on their behalf. Through empathy and thoughtful consideration, we can honour the bond we share with our animal companions, guiding them with love and grace through life's most profound transition.
