Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ

Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens and assist with desexing and urgent veterinary fees where cost is an issue.

Established in 1971, incorporated in 1973, and now a charitable trust, the League is a registered charity dedicated to relieving pain and suffering in cats and kittens in Canterbury, New Zealand. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens and help where we can. If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, please ring our cattery on 03-3840006, option

1 or email [email protected], to discuss and/or to make an appointment to view those available. The cattery is situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston, Christchurch and is open from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and from 11am to 2.30pm on Sunday and Tuesday to Friday. It is closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. Our office is also situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston and is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays). They can be contacted on 03-3840006, option 2 or by email [email protected]. Along with general advice our office provides the following services:

- We take in stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens by way of a wait list although we assist in emergency situations as soon as possible.

- If your cat requires urgent veterinary treatment we can assist with vet fees where cost is an issue, including allowing you to pay off treatment in some circumstances.

- We run a desexing programme called the Feline Fix where we try to get as many cats desexed as we can. Discounted and subsidised prices are available to community service card holders and people with a low income at selected vets around Canterbury.

- We run a lost and found service. We encourage any pet owners who have lost their cat to list them on the page Lost Cats Christchurch, Trade Me and www.animalregister.co.nz.

- We hire out trapping and holding cages. The fees are $5 for trapping cages and $10 for holding cages plus a refundable bond of $20. As a charity we also appreciate donations of food and goods for the cats and of course money. Food and goods for the cats cat be dropped off at our cattery or office at 14 Charlesworth Street in Woolston during our opening hours listed above. Cash and eftpos donations can also be accepted there or they can be made to our bank account 02-1259-0057270-000 or via our givealitte page; https://givealittle.co.nz/org/cplcats

We thank you for your support!

Harley boy is about 9 years old. He is a sleek and handsome dude with a big purr-sonality. He enjoys lots of attention, absolutely loves play time and - once settled - he likes to sleep on your bed.

Harley can be overstimulated from a lot of noise or busyness so will suit a quiet, calm home, ideally with owners who have prior experience with high energy cats (especially ones that love to steal) and who can help set boundaries. Harley is a quirky cat looking for his second chance.

Sweet Pip is about 1 year old and looking for his second chance. He is a little shy to begin with, but turns into a very sweet and loving boy once he gets to know you. Having spent some time in our shelter environment, Pip was very unhappy and didn’t settle. He is now in a foster home where he has made amazing progress.

Pip loves company. Whether from his foster parents or the other cats, he loves to be social. He is a gentle boy and his job as a biscuit maker ensures that he is ready to take his afternoon nap on your lap. He is the biggest fan of head boops and has no respect for boundaries as he smooshes his face into yours. He is a very playful boy and loves to get up to shenanigans with his foster siblings.

After a brief escape from his first foster home, this guy is now ready to find a place to call his own. He will suit a calm environment (possibly with older children) and patient owners who can help him thrive.

Pip is being rehomed direct from foster care. Please phone the cattery on (03)3840006 and select option 1, or email us at mailto:[email protected] (please include your phone number).

Lovely Lucy is about 10 years old. A shy wee girl, she is easily overwhelmed and it has taken her a while to settle at the cattery. She will suit a quiet home as an only pet, with an understanding owner who is happy for her to blossom at her own pace. Lucy will take time to trust you and will need a calm home environment.

Lucy arrived at the cattery with a painful skin condition. We have been able to get this under control with medication and a special diet, and she will need to stay on both of these long term. She will qualify for our Saving Lives scheme - please discuss this with our rehoming staff.

More wonderful news out of the cattery today with the adoption of Softy and Tabitha together. They and two other siblings were trapped at an industrial workplace in June last year along with an older cat who may have been their mother. They all needed a lot of love and socialisation to get them ready for adoption. Now adults, Softy and Tabitha are much improved on their early days so it is a joy to see them finally get their own home. ❤

Snowball has left the building!!!!!!! 💕💕💕
After a massive 623 days at the cattery, Snowball finally went to his new home today. He was originally surrendered as he was stressed by a lot of stray cats in the area, whom he was fighting with.
We are so pleased that he now gets his second chance. ❤️❤️❤️

Gentle Zozo is about 12 years old. Friendly and independent, she is a sweet cat in search of a mature and loving home where she can enjoy her twilight years in comfort. She enjoys company and likes to keep herself busy.

Zozo was surrendered to CPL because her owner was unable to continue with her care. She was underweight on arrival and blood tests showed that she has an over-active thyroid (a common problem in older cats). She has been stabilised on medication which will need to be continued, please discuss this with our rehoming staff.

Handsome Petrov is about 5 years old. This darling boy has been at the cattery for a whopping 21 months, having arrived in June 2023, and we would love for him to find his forever home soon!

Petrov is a friendly and cheerful boy who absolutely adores a good run around and playtime. However, he doesn't understand boundaries very well and can become over-stimulated when he's in play mode. He will need a patient owner who can help him understand and accept boundaries.

Petrov has tested positive for FIV. Cats who carry this virus usually lead long and otherwise healthy lives, but need to be indoor-only as they can infect other cats. There is no risk to humans or other animal species.
