Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ

Cats Protection League Canterbury - NZ We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens and assist with desexing and urgent veterinary fees where cost is an issue.

Established in 1971, incorporated in 1973, and now a charitable trust, the League is a registered charity dedicated to relieving pain and suffering in cats and kittens in Canterbury, New Zealand. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens and help where we can. If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, please ring our cattery on 03-3840006, option

1 or email [email protected], to discuss and/or to make an appointment to view those available. The cattery is situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston, Christchurch and is open from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and from 11am to 2.30pm on Sunday and Tuesday to Friday. It is closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. Our office is also situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston and is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays). They can be contacted on 03-3840006, option 2 or by email [email protected]. Along with general advice our office provides the following services:

- We take in stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens by way of a wait list although we assist in emergency situations as soon as possible.

- If your cat requires urgent veterinary treatment we can assist with vet fees where cost is an issue, including allowing you to pay off treatment in some circumstances.

- We run a desexing programme called the Feline Fix where we try to get as many cats desexed as we can. Discounted and subsidised prices are available to community service card holders and people with a low income at selected vets around Canterbury.

- We run a lost and found service. We encourage any pet owners who have lost their cat to list them on the page Lost Cats Christchurch, Trade Me and www.animalregister.co.nz.

- We hire out trapping and holding cages. The fees are $5 for trapping cages and $10 for holding cages plus a refundable bond of $20. As a charity we also appreciate donations of food and goods for the cats and of course money. Food and goods for the cats cat be dropped off at our cattery or office at 14 Charlesworth Street in Woolston during our opening hours listed above. Cash and eftpos donations can also be accepted there or they can be made to our bank account 02-1259-0057270-000 or via our givealitte page; https://givealittle.co.nz/org/cplcats

We thank you for your support!

Mr. Paddington is about 1 year old and is also known as Paddy. He is a friendly and confident dude who enjoys fuss and attention, greeting visitors and exploring the cattery. However, he doesn't like other cats and was picking fights in his previous neighbourhood.

Found as stray, Mr. Paddington came into CPL care when the flatmates who found him went their separate ways.

When one of our volunteers noticed that a cat was hanging around his home that wasn't in good condition he borrowed one of our traps and brought him in to the cattery. Named William, after the volunteer, he was frightened and clearly very hungry, and he was also unneutered. It took a while for William to settle down and realise that we meant him no harm, and that he would receive regular meals. It is always a delight to see the transformation in these cats, and it is even better to see him go to his new home today. :)

It's hard to believe it but it's the last day of January today! Where did that month go? We had a bumper month with 16 adult cats and 26 kittens adopted, a total of 42! 3
There are still a lot of cats and kittens needing help, so if you have an undesexed cat that is 4 months or older and you need assistance with getting it desexed, please contact us, or any of the other rescues offering help. Every cat desexed relieves that little bit of pressure.

Sweet Willow is about 2 years old. Shy at first, she is cuddly and playful once she knows you. She is very "busy" at the moment - probably as she is still quite nervous - but will relax and settle down once she finds her feet. She will suit a quieter home and a patient new owner.

Willow came into CPL care with mama Belle and sister Millie (both already reserved) as they were not allowed in their owner's rental property.

Willow has tested positive for FIV (feline aids) and will need to be an indoor-only pet. Please talk to our rehoming staff for more information about this.

Dainty Minx is about 1 year old. She is a wee whirlwind - cheeky, playful and active - and will suit a home where there is plenty to do and someone home much of the time to keep her out of mischief!

Minx came into CPL care with her four kittens. Her owner already had two other cats and was unable to manage the extra furry family. Her kittens are now weaned and in foster care, and mama is ready to start her new life.

Minx has tested positive for FIV (feline aids) and will need to be an indoor-only pet. Please talk to our rehoming staff for more information about this.

Charlie came into our care as part of a colony of cats which started as a group of undesexed cats whose owner had passed away. He was chosen a while ago and his adopter has been visiting regularly to earn his trust as is a shy boy. Lovely to see him go to his new home today. :)

Handsome Toby is about 2 years old. Shy with strangers and easily spooked, he is playful and gentle once he knows and trusts you. He enjoyed sleeping on his owner's bed and was a very chatty companion. We have noticed that he gets your attention by patting you or grabbing your hand in his mouth (gently!) and tugging. He will best suit a quiet home and patient new owner.

Toby was surrendered because his owner had too many cats and the landlord wasn't happy. We have another cat from the same household coming in, but Toby would probably prefer to be only cat in his new home.

Two kittens were adopted today with Kaylee and Shadow both going to new homes. :)

A wonderful update on Jacinta (now Salem).
When my husband and I got her we were fully prepared for a timid, quiet cat who wasn’t much of a fan of pats or affection. We didn’t mind, we were just happy to have the opportunity to be able to give her a home to live comfortably and quietly, with the possibility of providing a bit of company for our existing 6 year old cat who was also quite shy and a little lonely.
I’m over joyed to be able to tell you she is fully settled in and is a completely different cat than the one we bought home! Salem has completely come out of her shell and is the most goofy, cuddly and playful cat. She sleeps on our bed with her sister every night and greets us in the morning waiting to be picked up for cuddles (leaps and bounds from the cat who was scared of a simple pat). She loves spending her days zooming through the house with her sister, playing with her endless supply of toys and rolling off her tower while trying to get comfortable.
It’s safe to say we can’t think of our lives without her in it and she will forever be spoilt and well looked after. I’ve attached just a few out of the millions of photos we already have of her.
Thank you guys for everything you do for all the cats in need ❤️

Friendly Milly is about 3 years old. Busy, fun-loving and playful, she enjoys human company and will keep her new owners endlessly entertained. While she loves being around people she is less happy around other cats and will do best as an only pet.

Milly came into CPL care as a stray as her finder was unable to keep her. She has tested positive for FIV (feline aids) and this means she will need to be an indoor-only pet. Please talk to our rehoming staff for more information about this.
