Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other's company, and to promote adoption. Located in Christchurch, Catnap Café opened in July 2018 and is the South Island's first and only cat cafe. Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other’s company and to find forever homes for resc

ue cats. We work alongside Cat Rescue Christchurch to increase the number of stray and abandoned cats being re-homed, to educate the community about the importance of desexing, and promote adoption. The café provides both a permanent home for four resident rescue cats, and a foster home for rescue cats and kittens that are available for the public to adopt. There are usually between 15-20 cats at the cafe at any time. The café is divided into two areas, a food area and a cat area. The food area is much like a normal cafe in which you can order food and drinks (these can also be taken through into the cat area). The cat area is a place for people and cats to hang out together in a fun and cosy environment. As well as providing an adoption service, the cafe is a great place for cat lovers to simply spend time with cats, especially those who aren’t able to have cats of their own such as elderly people in rest homes, students, travellers and renters. Group bookings and other private events are welcome and we also run evening events such as yoga, movie nights, drawing classes, quizzes and board game nights.

It’s time for another Catnap Summer Market! ☀️

This year’s market will be held on Sunday, 1st of December, in the carpark out the back of Catnap and will run from 10am - 2pm.

A range of stall holders will be selling some really cool stuff, from crochet and jewellery to cat toys and accessories! Pop on by and treat yourself or get some cute gifts for Christmas! 🎁

We’ll also have a super awesome raffle available with some really great products and vouchers. Raffle tickets will be available in store soon as well 🎟️

Have you been to Cat Yoga yet?! Only two more sessions left for the year! 🐈🧘🏻

We’ve been running yoga with cats for over six years now and it’s always been one of our most popular events. It almost always sells out so get in while you can! It honestly doesn’t get much better than combining cats, exercise and relaxation. So good for the mind and body! 😌

Huh? What was that noise? … Oh it’s just Big Boss looking for a forever home 😼

Big Boss came to us from [REDACTED], after some time spent toughing it out in the wilderness. Luckily, he befriended a kind local who helped get him into our care. After going to visit and finding him with a bite wound on his head, un-desexed and without a microchip, we took him in to get him bandaged up (and fixed and vaxed) and back in top shape! 😿

We’re glad to say he’s doing great and is now looking for a new home to settle down in 🏡 He’s a bit too rambunctious to go into the main cat area, but if you’re keen to meet him just let us know and we can organise a time to visit.

Big Boss is a very affectionate boy, he’ll smooch and headbutt you constantly until you give him some big pats, he truly just really likes having someone to hang out with! He’s also pretty playful and loves hiding inside cardboard boxes and batting around all sorts of dangly toys 📦

Our calendar features thirteen of our favourite photos of Catnap cats from the past year. It also has days, months and holidays on it for some reason, I guess in case you want to actually use it as a calendar rather than just an excuse to put cute cats on your wall 😸

Winnie is a wee firecracker! 🧨 She’s very playful, a little feisty and always on 2x speed — but she is also very sweet and smoochy 😻 She’s still getting used to having lots of new people around so tends to pop in and out of the room depending on how busy it is. She’s so keen to be friends with all of the other cats that she does get a little bit overexcited sometimes! 😸

If you’re wondering how to tell Winnie apart from our other two little black kittens, take note! Winnie has yellow eyes, no collar and very sleek fur. Lucy has a similar body shape but her eyes are green and her fur is less shiny. Mr Tumnus is wearing a blue collar, has one white whisker, and is a bit stockier than the girls!

Oh also, if you see a black blur zooming around at top speed, it’s probably Winnie 😅

You’ve met Chad and Delilah but there’s a third member of the family we haven’t introduced yet, Darlene! 🐈

Darlene is a sweet girl with the cutest little curled up wonky tail! It’s technically a spinal deformity that she was most likely born with but it doesn’t cause her any issues, it’s just a cute wee quirk! 🥰 She is shy to begin with but really affectionate once she trusts you. At the moment she mostly comes out into the main room after hours and is always waiting at the window to greet us in the mornings but she is getting braver and has just started to pop out with customers around in the afternoons to see what’s going on 👀

Meet Delilah! Following on from our post about Chad on Monday, we would like to introduce one of his two sisters, ain’t she just the prettiest? 😻

Delilah is such a lovely girl! She’s very affectionate and sweet but has a bit of a wild side too! 🤪 She gets some mad zoomies first thing in the morning and in the evenings, but throughout the day she’s usually more keen for pats and laps. She will sometimes take herself out back for a breather if it’s busy but most of the time she’ll be out and about, playing, smooching and snuggling 🥰

Regarding the industrial fire in Sydenham today, the cats are all fine and there is no smoke detectable inside the building. We have our air intakes turned off and an air purifier running.

At the moment the wind is blowing the smoke away from us but we’ll keep a close eye on it.

At this stage we feel comfortable saying you’re still able to visit Catnap, however if you don’t feel safe and would prefer to reschedule send us a message or an email.

Thomas and Harley have gone to their new home together! 🐈🐈‍⬛

Their story is a cute one! They’ve actually been adopted by the person who originally found Thomas as a five week old kitten all on his own near some train tracks at a work site 🛤️ We took him in and got him all nice and healthy and socialised 🥰

Thomas and Harley arrived separately but at a similar time and both being very energetic kittens of roughly the same age we ended up putting them in isolation together, with the hopes they would entertain each other. They loved having each other for company and became great friends! ❤️

Their adopter had been keen to adopt Thomas since finding him and quickly fell in love with Harley too. We were super stoked when he let us know he was keen to adopt them both! He waited patiently until they were both ready to go (Harley has a heart murmur and needed some further investigations) and had been visiting them every week for the past few months. Finally the time came to take them both home! 🏡

Kiwi has been adopted! 🐈🏡

Most of you won’t have met Kiwi as she never made it into our main room but she’s been with us for a couple of months, first in foster care with one of our staff and then in one of our intake rooms at the cafe. She actually turned up in our carpark one evening and we think someone probably abandoned her there as we had no luck finding her family and she wasn’t desexed or microchipped.

Kiwi has gone to a wonderful home with a regular visitor of ours and she is settling in well! We’re so glad that she is safe and warm in a home of her own ❤️

Monkey has been adopted! 🐵

If you’ve been around Catnap a while you may remember Monkey, our three-and-a-half legged cat who was found in a tree stump down Mount Somers way. She was originally adopted from us a couple of years ago but, due to a change in her adopter’s circumstances, moved back to Catnap last month.

We had hoped she would integrate back into the main room, but after living the single life for the past few years she just wasn’t too keen on having a bunch of rambunctious kittens around. Fair enough! 😼

We’re happy to share that Monkey is adapting very well to her new home, exploring and snuggling with her new family. She’s already settling in super well and will remain a solo cat — just as she likes it! ❤️😸

George is missing from his home in Wigram 😔

George was adopted from us with his brother John a couple of months ago but has unfortunately gone missing. We think he is hiding in Wigram Primary School or nearby as there have been a few alleged sightings of him there. If anyone is in the area, please keep an eye out for George and contact us if you see him. He is wearing a blue collar with a gold tag. He is desexed and microchipped.

Happy New Year, and if you haven’t picked a New Years resolution yet, how about fostering kittens!? Details below 🎉 Our “Christmas break” has truly been kittens, kittens, kittens! 🐈🐈🐈 But hey, we can’t complain, that’s totally what we signed up for! 😸 Last week we took a trip out to the Cat Rescue centre to deliver the amazing gifts you guys donated to our Gifting Tree over the past few weeks 🎄🎁 We had a wee unwrapping session with some of their current babies who had a great time frolicking amongst the wrapping paper 😅 Check out the chaotic cuteness in the video below. We have three new kittens in the main room ready for you all to meet once we reopen this Wednesday! (Intro post to come!) We also had five more new arrivals who are still a wee bit too small for the main room but will be joining the Catnap Crew soon as well 🥰 If you too, would like more kittens in your life this year, consider becoming a foster family for Cat Rescue Christchurch!
