Located in Christchurch, Catnap Café opened in July 2018 and is the South Island's first and only cat cafe. ue cats. We work alongside Cat Rescue Christchurch to increase the number of stray and abandoned cats being re-homed, to educate the community about the importance of desexing, and promote adoption. The café provides both a permanent home for four resident rescue cats, and a foster home for rescue cats and kittens that are available for the public to adopt. There are usually between 15-20 cats at the cafe at any time. The café is divided into two areas, a food area and a cat area. The food area is much like a normal cafe in which you can order food and drinks (these can also be taken through into the cat area). The cat area is a place for people and cats to hang out together in a fun and cosy environment. As well as providing an adoption service, the cafe is a great place for cat lovers to simply spend time with cats, especially those who aren’t able to have cats of their own such as elderly people in rest homes, students, travellers and renters. Group bookings and other private events are welcome and we also run evening events such as yoga, movie nights, drawing classes, quizzes and board game nights.

Jerry went to his forever home just before Christmas! 🐈🏡

Quite the character, Jerry would make a racket during play fights and always had something to say if he wasn’t getting enough attention 🙀 He’s very high energy, loves to play and wants to be around people at all times, so we made sure his new family knew what to expect! 😅

We loved having Jerry at the cafe but he was definitely ready for his new home in recent weeks, so we were stoked to find him the perfect place in time for the holidays! 🎄

Meet Skoda! She may be the new kid but she’s already Miss Popular! ✨

She’s quite the wobbly girl as she has cerebellar hypoplasia, so her balance and coordination aren’t the best 🧠 She is, however, obsessed with our plastic spring toys so you’ll often see her barreling about trying to catch one, then proudly prancing along once she’s picked one up 😸 The more excited she gets, the wobblier she becomes! So if you see her careening into a wall or falling over backwards, never fear, she’s practically made out of rubber and isn’t fazed at all with the odd tumble. She also has permanently raised third eyelids, which she’s had all her life and is just another quirk that just adds to her cuteness ❤️

She’s very friendly, loves people, and will absolutely climb you if she wants attention 😅 She’ll also show her affection with licks and nibbles on your hands (or face!) 👅

This Christmas, we’re supporting our partner rescue Cat Rescue Christchurch, with a Giving Tree at the cafe! 🎄Each tag on the tree features an item from their current wishlist. You can also check out the full list here: www.catrescue.org.nz/donate/wish-list/.

We did this last year as well and it’s a really great way to help Cat Rescue during their busiest time of year (kitten season!) You can contribute presents for the Catnap cats if you want to as well. Just pop “Catnap Cats” on the gift so we know it’s for them 🎁

How it works:

1. Take a tag (or just make a note of the item).

2. Purchase the gift on your tag.

3. Bring the gift in (wrapped or unwrapped) and place it under the tree.

4. We will take the gifts to Cat Rescue.

Big Boss has been adopted! 🐈🏡

We first met Big Boss when a kindhearted person contacted us after finding him hanging around their house, but not being able to track down where he had come from. We went to visit him and found he wasn’t desexed or microchipped, and had a nasty bite wound on his head so we took him in and got him all fixed up! 🤕 Being a big boisterous boy, we didn’t introduce him into our main room, but we loved getting to know him during his stay in our intake room. We’re so happy we were able to get him off the streets, all patched up and into a nice safe home ❤️

Big Boss is a very affectionate and energetic boy and has settled into his new home really well 😺 In fact, we heard from his family about an hour after they took him home that he was already enjoying his new surroundings and getting lots of pats from his new humans 🥰

It’s time for another Catnap Summer Market! ☀️

This year’s market will be held on Sunday, 1st of December, in the carpark out the back of Catnap and will run from 10am - 2pm.

A range of stall holders will be selling some really cool stuff, from crochet and jewellery to cat toys and accessories! Pop on by and treat yourself or get some cute gifts for Christmas! 🎁

We’ll also have a super awesome raffle available with some really great products and vouchers. Raffle tickets will be available in store soon as well 🎟️

We’ve been running yoga with cats for over six years now and it’s always been one of our most popular events. It almost always sells out so get in while you can! It honestly doesn’t get much better than combining cats, exercise and relaxation. So good for the mind and body! 😌

Huh? What was that noise? … Oh it’s just Big Boss looking for a forever home 😼

Big Boss came to us from [REDACTED], after some time spent toughing it out in the wilderness. Luckily, he befriended a kind local who helped get him into our care. After going to visit and finding him with a bite wound on his head, un-desexed and without a microchip, we took him in to get him bandaged up (and fixed and vaxed) and back in top shape! 😿

We’re glad to say he’s doing great and is now looking for a new home to settle down in 🏡 He’s a bit too rambunctious to go into the main cat area, but if you’re keen to meet him just let us know and we can organise a time to visit.

Big Boss is a very affectionate boy, he’ll smooch and headbutt you constantly until you give him some big pats, he truly just really likes having someone to hang out with! He’s also pretty playful and loves hiding inside cardboard boxes and batting around all sorts of dangly toys 📦

Our first batch is due to arrive around 7th November. We’ll have more arriving shortly after that, but jump online and order one now if you want to get in on the first run! 🙀

Our calendar features thirteen of our favourite photos of Catnap cats from the past year. It also has days, months and holidays on it for some reason, I guess in case you want to actually use it as a calendar rather than just an excuse to put cute cats on your wall 😸

Winnie is a wee firecracker! 🧨 She’s very playful, a little feisty and always on 2x speed — but she is also very sweet and smoochy 😻 She’s still getting used to having lots of new people around so tends to pop in and out of the room depending on how busy it is. She’s so keen to be friends with all of the other cats that she does get a little bit overexcited sometimes! 😸

If you’re wondering how to tell Winnie apart from our other two little black kittens, take note! Winnie has yellow eyes, no collar and very sleek fur. Lucy has a similar body shape but her eyes are green and her fur is less shiny. Mr Tumnus is wearing a blue collar, has one white whisker, and is a bit stockier than the girls!

Oh also, if you see a black blur zooming around at top speed, it’s probably Winnie 😅

You’ve met Chad and Delilah but there’s a third member of the family we haven’t introduced yet, Darlene! 🐈

Darlene is a sweet girl with the cutest little curled up wonky tail! It’s technically a spinal deformity that she was most likely born with but it doesn’t cause her any issues, it’s just a cute wee quirk! 🥰 She is shy to begin with but really affectionate once she trusts you. At the moment she mostly comes out into the main room after hours and is always waiting at the window to greet us in the mornings but she is getting braver and has just started to pop out with customers around in the afternoons to see what’s going on 👀

Happy New Year, and if you haven’t picked a New Years resolution yet, how about fostering kittens!? Details below 🎉 Our “Christmas break” has truly been kittens, kittens, kittens! 🐈🐈🐈 But hey, we can’t complain, that’s totally what we signed up for! 😸 Last week we took a trip out to the Cat Rescue centre to deliver the amazing gifts you guys donated to our Gifting Tree over the past few weeks 🎄🎁 We had a wee unwrapping session with some of their current babies who had a great time frolicking amongst the wrapping paper 😅 Check out the chaotic cuteness in the video below. We have three new kittens in the main room ready for you all to meet once we reopen this Wednesday! (Intro post to come!) We also had five more new arrivals who are still a wee bit too small for the main room but will be joining the Catnap Crew soon as well 🥰 If you too, would like more kittens in your life this year, consider becoming a foster family for Cat Rescue Christchurch!
