Peanut 🥜

There were lots of comments about Nutty in the ‘honourable mentions’ post so I thought I’d give her her own update ❤️

Peanut came into the rescue at 5wks old jn 2015. She was limp in a box underneath her littermates & was only a fraction of their size - just a wee peanut that fit in 1 hand. She spent her first 5 days in hospital care while vomiting & passing worms nonstop. Her worm burden was huge, they were literally sucking everything from her. Every day the vets kindly told me she may not be meant to make it but I was sure she was a fighter. After the initial days she came home & went back to the vets every few days for fluids & meds, still passing the worms. This went on for weeks. It turns out she was so riddled with worms that her stomach lining was unable to form properly, she she didn’t take all the nutrients from her food. In turn she ate & ate & ate but didn’t grow. They also tracked their way through her respiratory system causing chest infections. She was a sick wee girl that’s for sure, living her first 3 months inside my shirt.
It’s impossible to nurse a sick pup like that and not form a bond so Peanut became our new edition.
Amazingly, last week she celebrated her 9th Birthday! 🎈 She still eats like a horse , spins in circles at dinner time, barks at strangers but then covers them in white hair 5 minutes later when she wants to be friends. She’s still the dumbest dog I’ve ever met but also the most innocent & sweet ❤️

❤️ My top 10 ❤️

Picking 10 was SO hard! I could’ve done my top 50 & still struggled to choose. We’ve had 1000s of dogs through the rescue & every one of them has been a beautiful soul & deserving of happiness.

Here’s my top 10 honourable mentions! Clockwise from top left.

Samson - 3 different rescues & 2 years in shelters. Big loving boy had the kindest heart & finally his happily ever after, which he’s still enjoying ❤️

Snoop - Pound boy who reminded me so much of Papa in nature he immediately became my shelter favourite ❤️

Sasha - Left in a car to starve at 12yrs old, we were so honoured to make her last days her happiest ❤️

Piri - The first APBT legally rehomed from the CCC pound 🥳

Buddy - Living in abandoned houses after the earthquake; he was the very first ever official CBBR dog. The day I picked him up I started the FB page. ❤️

Choccy - It’s hard to watch a beautiful little puppy grow & thrive and not catch feelings. Forever one of my favs ❤️

Ragnar - Possibly the best ‘rags to riches’ story we’ve ever had & proof that it’s not all about how they’re raised. Seeing where he came from, & then living the rest of his days in bliss is the biggest payday! ❤️

Nos - Beautiful soul, beautiful face, beautiful nature. Very hard not to be in top 10. ❤️

Kohla - Found scavenging in the snow living in a cemetery, Kohla was so so special. I’ll always remember sneaking her into my bed when we were living at the rescue during our earthquake repairs. The best cuddle buddy ❤️

Peanut - She lived in my shirt for the first 3 months of her life - sick, struggling & not growing. Every day we thought was her last but she was a fighter & still is. We just celebrated her 9th birthday last week

1 - Papa

I don’t think this one was much of a surprise. Papa, my #1 son, my favourite, my soul dog! ❤️
Arriving with his brother at 9wks old, we were “just fostering”. My toddler could say ‘puppy’ so ‘Papa’ just stuck.
During that time our beautiful girl Roxy had to be put to sleep & left a pitbull shaped hole in my heart that Papa snuck into. He became the ambassadog for the rescue, coming to all our events and being big brother to likely well over 1000 pups & dogs. He is the most patient, kind & loving soul. He has a grin to die for & thinks everyone who comes to visit is here for him & him alone.
3 years ago he was literally on deaths door, suffocating in front of our eyes & we were sure he had only days left. Thanks to our amazing CBBR supporters he had a specialist and life saving surgery to tie open his airways. It wasn’t a guarentee as there were other issues at play also but he surprised us all by making a full recovery. The last 3 years have been a complete gift & I have been grateful for each & every extra day we get with him. In 6 weeks we will celebrate his 13th birthday! 🎁 ❤️

2 - Walter

In 2014, we took a 10 month old boy from a rural North Canterbury pound. He had been found skinny & scavenging rubbish along a beach & became sick from drinking salt water.
To say it was love at first sight was an understatement. Walter had this big lollipop head on this teeny wee body. His ears never went down, he was like a giant frenchie. He screamed like a goat & Papa took him on as his BFF. He became a part of the family, came on TV with me, won over anyone he met with his amazing nature & personality.
We had every intention of him being our forever dog but unfortunately our old man staffy boy at the time, Linx, wasn’t having it. With the rescue being at home, 4 dogs plus the rescue ones just wasn’t possible.
That’s when Walter met his best mate & I knew his happily ever after was only just starting. Walter was his soul dog & I was lucky enough to live only 200m away & watch him grow old with his family. He was adored by 2 little girls, best friend to a cat & such a huge part of their family.
Walter passed in December 2023 at 10 years old ❤️

3 - Money

In 2013 I had a call from the Otago SPCA about a dog that has been dumped in their carpark. I agreed to meet them halfway & drove to Timaru to collect. I remember the inspector saying “I hope you have a decent lead … he’s big”. I scoffed, thinking I deal with big dogs all the time. I was definitely not expecting a gentle giant of this size to step out of the truck!
This big marshmallow was immediately accepted by my own dogs & became a part of our pack. He had the worst case of happy tail I have ever seen, which due to his size resulted in arcs of blood throughout the house making it constantly look like a murder scene. We had to get 6” of his tail amputated in order for it to heal.
My brother had not long come home from overseas & told me “that’s my dog”! And he definitely was ❤️
In his later life Money suffered with niggling skin issues that wouldn’t ease up. One day in 2018 I was headed around to my brothers pick him up for a vet appointment. Neither him or Bonnie met me at the door like usual. When I looked out in the yard, Money was laying still with Bonnie refusing to move from his side. At just over 10yrs old he had collapsed & passed away from a heart attack. 💔
This gentle giant touched so many hearts & it was a pleasure to know & love him!

4 - Nala

In 2016 we had a new arrival come in who was just terrified of everything. She was so shut down & scared of the world, she didn’t eat/drink, just sat at the back of her run wide eyed & growling at anyone who would approach. While trying to coax her with every treat imaginable, I noticed her ears would perk up every time she could hear my kids playing outside. I called in my son Zack, just to sit next to me & see what happened. She immediately got up, gave us a wag & approached. She trusted Zack straight away & through him she was able to make so much progress over the following days.
The video I made of this encounter went around like world so fast it was nuts. We had calls from news stations in Australia, UK, Japan, Netherlands, USA, Ireland & more all wanting a piece of the story. All up the videos were viewed well over 20 million times. Unfortunately for us they were all re-shares so we didn’t get any of the YouTube money.
We did however find Nala a family with a young boy of her own who loved her & made her feel safe, just like Zack did. ❤️

5 - Ziva

Ziva came from the Invercargill pound in 2014. She was just at baby herself at 9mnths old but was heavily pregnant. After a week of getting her comfy she went into labour, had 1 baby & then stopped. One a huge night at after hours later, we headed home with a very exhausted mama Ziva & 8 beautiful babies. A quick pit-stop at McDonald’s on the way home & suddenly we were heading home with 9 beautiful babies!!
After being a wonderful mum to her babies she even took on a foster pup who had been taken from mum too young. She lived as part of our family for 6 months before being adopted & she has forever been “the one that got away”.
Ziva lived out her days with a really loving family, continuing to show the world the beautiful APBT nature until she passed last year. ❤️
Luckily for us she also bought Gibbs into our lives. As one of her stunning litter, my brother picked him out the day he was born. So my number 5 is a 2 for 1 deal 😍
