We have a lovely shorthair ginger tabby male cat at the clinic. He was brought in last night after a minor run in with a dog on Clipper place, he appears uninjured but has been kept for monitoring and given some pain relief. He is neutered but unfortunately he is not microchipped.

Every day is at the NZVA, but today is the official one! 🐾 This year, we're celebrating the essential role veterinarians play in Aotearoa. From treating and caring for our animals and working on the front lines of disease prevention to monitoring animal welfare and biosecurity on a national scale, New Zealand’s veterinarians play an important role in keeping both animals and humans safe.

A huge thank you to all the veterinarians in Aotearoa for your hard work and tireless dedication. Please join us in celebrating our veterinary teams today (and every day) by giving them a shout out in the comments 🎉🙌

🐰 Is the Easter Bunny bringing sweet treats to your house this weekend? Remember to keep them away from your pets - unless you want a trip to the emergency vet! Easter treats that are for your pets include:

❌ chocolate - this can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive panting, abnormal heartbeat or seizures
❌ hot cross buns - these often contain raisins which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and even kidney failure
❌ nuts, especially macadamia nuts - these can cause weakness and temporary paralysis in dogs' hind legs
❌ sugar-free sweets containing xylitol or birch sugar - these can lead to low blood sugar, seizures and liver failure
❌ uncooked dough containing yeast - this can expand in your pet's stomach and cause bloating, vomiting or alcohol poisoning
❌ cooked bones - these can splinter and cause digestive problems

If you want to give your pet a treat these holidays, stick to their favourite pet treat instead.

Missing from the casebrook area

MISSING - Chuck is an 11 year old greyhound missing from Casebrook.
He's been missing since the morning of Sunday 10th March, with one (possible) sighting of him two doors down from his home not long after he went missing.
Some distinguishing features of Chuck are; he's black with subtle white markings on his chest, muzzle and paws, and has a small scar on his back left thigh.
Chuck is a super friendly gentle chap, he loves the attention of people. However, he may be a little timid/scared now if approached after being away from home so long.
If anyone has seen him or knows anything please contact Chris on 0277266091

Sadly we have had a deceased cat brought in today. She is a female black and white cat domestic shorthair, no microchip or collar. We estimate she would be around 3-4 years. She was found on the motorway north of the Prestons road overpass. Please call the clinic if you think she may be your girl :(

Do you have a curious kurī (dog), hōiho (horse) or āpaka (alpaca)? Remember to keep them away from products containing ionophores, which can cause ionophore toxicity.

Ionophores may be found in kāwhe (calf) and reme (lamb) meal or milk replacer. Many kurī love the taste of calf and lamb milk replacer and will jump at the chance to lick the containers or equipment! Make sure you keep your feeds away from kurī, hōiho or āpaka so they won't be tempted.

You may not see the signs of ionophore toxicity straight away, as it affects the heart and skeletal muscle. Your animals may show signs of muscle weakness or staggering - but don't wait until these signs appear.

If you're concerned that your kurī, hōiho or āpaka has gotten into a product containing ionophores, contact your rata kararehe (vet) immediately.
