What's been happening lately in the māra kai?

+ Potato growing competition launch potluck - A whole bunch of locals came together to celebrate the launch of our potato growing comp. We wished them luck as they compete to grow the biggest spud before Christmas.

+ Spring planting! We pulled another 45kg of carrots out of the māra kai and we replaced them with peas, spinach and parsley. Ngā mihi to Adelle and Mel for the planting mahi.

+ Tereo Māori mini signs - On Monday dozens and dozens of signs were made and spread all around the māra kai. We want to normalise the usage of tereo māori language in the māra kai. Toitū Te Reo Māori!

+ Kura partnerships - it was rawe to have Sacred Heart Kura come and join us in the māra last Wednesday for the first time. For the next 9 weeks we will have a rōpū of students come and along and get busy gardening from 1.30-2.30pm. These tamariki have so much knowledge and passion for growing veges. It's exciting to dream about how we can partner on a deeper level with local kura when we get our new community garden in Addington Park.

"Salad bag - always fresh and stays fresh for a full week unlike salad bags from supermarket." 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - Una

People seem to really love our salad mix & always talk about its flavor and longevity. Veges start to lose flavor and nutrients as soon as they are harvested & so its really important to keep the food chain really really short - we hand harvest our greens on a Tuesday and they are sitting in your kitchen less than 24 hours later. 💚

🥕🥦 Love local vege share - 6-8 vege items (Inc. salad mix) ($30pw)
🥬 Premium salad share - 250g ($12pw)

Needing some winter cooking inspiration?

Inspired by this weeks vege bag - Thai Coconut Pumpkin Soup is what you make when you want something delicous tasting with very little effort! Think – classic pumpkin soup with Thai red curry vibes. Perfect with the grey pumpkin + coriander from this week's vege bag.

https://www.recipetineats.com/thai-coconut-pumpkin-soup/

There is so much joy in eating local vegetables as they just taste way better! Why? They are fresher, which means more flavor and nutrients (veges drastically loose nutrients every day post-harvest).

Harvest is done ✅. It’s our last week for our Winter Vege Season. Here are some highlights 😊 of māra kai life from the past 12 weeks...

- We hosted a tamariki garden-to-table cooking event. 🥬 Such delicious dumplings
- We started a pamu noke - worm farm.
- Our heirloom tomato 🍅 seeds germinated… not long to wait.
- We celebrated 🎉 matariki together.
- We cared for our living soil by inoculating it with mycorrihizal fungi.
- We made a video all about a new community garden 🪴 proposal for Addington Park.
- We hosted 36 working bees 🐝 supporting locals to learn how to grow their own kai.

From all of us at Addington Farm - thanks so much for your support of our seasonal vege bags 💚. The financial income from our vege bags allows us to continue doing the mahi to grow a community of gardeners and gardens that help our neighborhood thrive. 🥕 🥦

Reason number THREE - I want to reduce my carbon footprint & be mindful of my environmental impact.

“I love knowing it's grown just around the corner.” Kate - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Something we really love about our seasonal vege bags is that the food chain is so so short!

With every step, every transaction, and every link in a more complex food chain there is risk, waste & greenhouse emissions as food is picked, packed, shipped, sorted, processed, transported, and more.

By buying directly from us you close the loop on so much waste and we take back our power to grow a food system that is nourishing for the people and the planet.

Reason number TWO - I want to know and support the growers who grow my kai.

“Absolutely love the fact that they are all grown locally and such a great group of people involved. Wilby is great at keeping us informed.” Emma - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Addington Farm crew takes so much pride in growing the kai to organic standards. Most of us live locally so it's a really good feeling to know that the veges we grow are being enjoyed by our neighbors.

Top 3 reasons people jump on board with our SEASONAL VEGES. Our vision is to build a community food system that’s resilient to climate change - help us make it happen simply by eating really good vegetables 💚. We have sent out 4,600 vege orders over the past 4 years. We asked a lot of our vege bag supporters why they signed up and there seemed to be 3 common reasons for jumping on board:

Reason number ONE - I want to eat nutritious, varied, in-season kai that tastes good.

“The salad is always fresh and stays fresh for a full week unlike salad bags from supermarket.” Una - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

“All the produce from their weekly vege bags is delicious and fresh.” Steph - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Our veges taste great because they are super fresh & grown organically. Full of nutrients and flavour they are available for pick up or delivery within just 24hrs of being harvested.

"The new community garden will help create more connections and supportive spaces, and kai is expensive! It will help create kai security for low-income locals" Alicia

Check this rawe video that reveals the ngākau (heart) behind the community garden proposal.

For those who have been asking, the new community garden has not been approved yet. We are still waiting for clarity. We have a big CCC stakeholder hui happening today! Wish us luck.

Big mihi to Joel from Wallan Productions. He generously made us this video for free! If you are ever needing some video work please get in contact with him.

Our story

It all started with a bunch of mates who wanted to see more good blossom in the Addington neighborhood! In 2018 the digging began and a not for profit urban farm was born! We are all about connecting people, supporting our place and growing great produce. The Addington Farm transforms unproductive backyards and dead spaces into vibrant vegetable patches. Our vision is to see the neighborhood deeply interconnected and thriving. Our main growing space is located at 31 Parlane St. Come on over and say Kia ora! We have open working bees on Mondays from 1-3pm. Learn some gardening skills or teach some of your old ones.
